UK PM: Rishi Sunak to Convene his First Cabinet Meeting with His Delegation

UK PM: The first Cabinet meeting with his new team will be held by UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Wednesday, a day after he was elected as the country’s first leader of Indian descent. In order to maintain economic stability, Sunak opted to keep the new Chancellor, Jeremy Hunt, in place on Tuesday. He also rehired Suella Braverman, who is of Indian descent, as the Home Secretary.
James Cleverly will continue in his role as Foreign Secretary despite not being a Sunak supporter, in another continuity-focused move. Sunak and Braverman are both Bexiteers, and it was Braverman’s harsh resignation letter that caused Liz Truss to leave Downing Street last week.

Sunak will meet with his new cabinet on Wednesday, his first full day as prime minister, before taking on opposition leader Keir Starmer in PMQs at noon, according to the BBC. Sunak has vowed to lead with “integrity” and has made an effort to bring the Conservatives together by assembling a diverse top team. However, the Labour Party in opposition has criticised the choice to re-appoint Braverman, who is well-liked on the Tory right, as home secretary barely six days after her resignation due to data breaches.

Sunak may face criticism for keeping Braverman as home secretary at his first Cabinet meeting.

James Cleverly, the Foreign Secretary who has remained in his position under the new prime minister Sunak, has justified the prime minister’s selection of Braverman to fill the position of home secretary once more. In the waning days of Truss’s premiership, Braverman was recently forced to resign from his position due to two data breaches. Cleverly told the BBC, “She acknowledged she made a mistake and apologised for that.” He continues by saying that when serving at the Home Office, Braverman pledged to crack down on crime and safeguard borders.

Sunak was “far, way, ahead,” says Cleverly

When asked whether Sunak’s rise to power led to Braverman’s return to the position, Cleverly responds that Sunak was “far, way, ahead” in the most recent Conservative leadership race and continues, “I doubt that he required any particular people’ backing.”

Bridget Phillipson, the shadow education secretary for Labour, claims that Sunak’s “grubby arrangement” that enabled Braverman to “jump over the line and become prime minister” is the reason why Braverman is back in her position.

Speaking to the Today show on BBC Radio 4, Phillipson makes the case that this brings Sunak’s promise to lead an honest administration into doubt.

It should “be about the future of our country, not the destiny of the Conservative Party,” she continues.

Phillipson does, however, welcome Gillian Keegan’s appointment as secretary of education with caution. Keegan finished his apprenticeship at 16 before quitting school.

A “huge drop-off in apprenticeship starts” and a “failure to prioritise skills” by Conservative-run governments are highlighted by Phillipson after describing the news as “great.” Sunak will also have a hectic first full day at work because he will participate in Prime Minister’s Questions for the first time. PMQs, a prominent weekly political event in the UK, take place every Wednesday at noon when the House of Commons is in session.

The prime minister is summoned to the despatch box in the Commons chamber for about 30 minutes to respond to questions from MPs on any topic.

The opposition leader receives six questions, which is typically the rowdiest part of the show.

As a result of a disastrous tax-cutting mini-budget and multiple policy U-turns, Liz Truss resigned last Thursday, setting off a tumultuous few days in Westminster that culminated with Sunak’s win in the Tory leadership contest.
