According to a United Nations (UN) report, the world will experience its first full year above 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels in the following decade, according to news agency AFP. Anywhere between 2030 and 2035 could mark the first complete year with temperatures 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.
The aim of the Paris Agreement might not be achieved if efforts to combat climate change, particularly reductions in carbon emissions, do not proceed at the correct rate.
Aim of Paris agreement
At the 21st UN Climate Change Conference (COP21), adopted on December 12, 2015, the aim of the Paris agreement, France is to hold “the increase in the global average temperature to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels” and pursue efforts “to limit the temperature increase to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels,” the UN says on its website.
According to AFP, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said that richer nations must achieve net-zero carbon emissions sooner, by 2040, in order to “defuse” the climatic “time bomb”. This indicates that in order to prevent irreversible damage from climate change, wealthy nations must slash their carbon emissions and greenhouse gas emissions to nearly zero levels. According to the UN, the remaining emissions must be reabsorbed from the atmosphere by things like forests and the ocean.
According to the UN report, there are more advantages to limiting global warming to two degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels than disadvantages. This means that regardless of how expensive mitigation efforts are, the advantages the world will experience as a result of attaining the Paris Agreement’s target will outweigh the downsides.
In the past eight years, temperatures around the world have broken records. Yet, global temperatures will climb to such an extent, that the record-breaking temperatures of the last eight years will feature among the coldest temps within three or four decades, according to the UN assessment.
