War 2 Box Office Collection Day 1: Weakest Film In YRF Spyverse? Hrithik Roshan And Jr NTR Starrer Fails To Beat War, Pathaan, Tiger 3 (Hindi)

Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR starrer War 2 had a weak opening at Rs 52.50 crore on Day 1, losing to Rajinikanth’s Coolie. Shockingly, the collection is even lower than War and Pathaan.

War 2 Box Office Collection Day 1: Ayan Mukerji’s War 2, starring Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR, released on 14 August, the same day as Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Rajinikanth-starrer Coolie. Early reports suggest that the YRF Spy Universe film struggled to impress audiences and critics, giving Coolie an early lead at the box office.

According to trade tracker Sacnilk, War 2 earned Rs 52.50 crore net in India on its first day. In comparison, Coolie opened slightly higher at over Rs 65 crore net. Hindi occupancy for War 2 stood at a low 29%, while Telugu audiences were more interested, with 75% occupancy. Tamil theatres reported 42% occupancy overall. Cities like Chennai and Hyderabad saw higher turnout, with 71% and 65% occupancy respectively, while Mumbai and NCR lagged behind at 16% and 25%.

War 2 Box Office Collection Day 1

While Rs 52.50 crore seems decent, it is below expectations given the star cast. The opening is lower than Hrithik’s War, which made Rs 53 crore on day one, and well below Pathaan’s Rs 57 crore. The Hindi version of War 2 also underperformed, collecting Rs 29 crore. In comparison, Tiger 3’s Hindi version opened at Rs 43 crore, Pathaan at Rs 55 crore, and War at Rs 51 crore.

Pathaan2023Rs 57.00 CrHindi: Rs 55 Cr, Telugu: Rs 1.50 Cr, Tamil: Rs 0.50 Cr

Those who have watched the film complained about no strong story in the film. Poor critic reviews could be a major reason for the lukewarm response. With mixed audience response and slow word of mouth, the film faces a challenge to maintain momentum over the extended holiday weekend.

Hrithik Roshan Starrer Is The Weakest Film In YRF Spy Universe

The situation is reminiscent of YRF’s earlier misfire, Thugs of Hindostan, which opened with Rs 52.25 crore but dropped 44% on day two and ended with Rs 151.3 crore domestically. This shows that even big-star films can struggle without strong content.

Directed by Ayan Mukerji, who previously helmed the mega-budget Brahmastra, War 2 also stars Kiara Advani and Ashutosh Rana. Mukerji is expected to continue the Spy Universe with Alia Bhatt set to star in the upcoming film Alpha.

While War 2 had all the ingredients for a blockbuster, its first-day performance shows that star power alone cannot guarantee success. The film will now rely on audience reactions and the long weekend to try and recover at the box office.
