The death of Hollywood director Rob Reiner and his wife has shocked many. The tragedy left the film world and political circles in disbelief. However, grief soon turned into anger. This happened after US President Donald Trump shared a harsh post online. Even some of his own supporters pushed back.
Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, were found dead at their Los Angeles home on Sunday. Police later said their 32-year-old son had been booked on suspicion of murder. Authorities also stressed one clear point. There is no proof that politics played any role in the killings.
Despite this, the tragedy quickly became political.
Rob Reiner Death Shocks Entire Hollywood
Rob Reiner was a well-known name in Hollywood. News of his violent death spread fast. Many were still trying to process what had happened. That made the timing of the comments even more painful for some.
Police confirmed there was no link between Reiner’s political views and the crime. Investigators have not suggested any political motive. The focus remains on the family tragedy and the ongoing investigation.
Nick Reiner, the couple’s son, is now in custody. He is being held on $4 million bail. Reports have spoken about his past struggles with drug abuse and homelessness. For many, this only deepened the sense of heartbreak around the case.
Donald Trump Faces Backlash Over His ‘Cruel’ Comments
On Monday, Donald Trump posted a message on Truth Social. He suggested that Rob Reiner’s criticism of him may have caused anger that led to the killing. He wrote that Reiner’s death was “I reportedly due to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME.”
The post shocked many people. It also drew quick backlash. Reporters later asked Trump if he stood by his words. He did not step back. “Well, I wasn’t a fan of his at all. He was a deranged person.” He added, “I thought he was very bad for our country.”
Criticism followed almost immediately. This time, it did not come only from Democrats or Hollywood figures. Several Republicans and Trump allies also spoke out.
Jenna Ellis (Trump’s former lawyer) called the comment unacceptable. She wrote, “A man and his wife were murdered last night. This is NOT the appropriate response.” She added, “The Right uniformly condemned political and celebratory responses to Charlie Kirk’s death. This is a horrible example from Trump (and surprising considering the two attempts on his own life) and should be condemned by everyone with any decency.”
Former ESPN host Sage Steele also reacted. She called the post “so disappointing.” She said, “It’s comments like this that take away from the countless great things @realDonaldTrump does for America.”
Several Republican lawmakers echoed the criticism. Thomas Massie called the remarks “inappropriate and disrespectful discourse about a man who was just brutally murdered.” Mike Lawler was more direct. He wrote, “This statement is wrong. Regardless of one’s political views, no one should be subjected to violence, let alone at the hands of their own son.”
Marjorie Taylor Greene urged restraint as well. “This is a family tragedy, not about politics or political enemies,” she wrote.
The episode has also revived older criticism of Trump’s tone after deaths. In the past, he faced backlash for comments about John McCain and John Dingell. For some, this moment felt similar.
As the anger continues, Senator Chuck Schumer summed it up bluntly. Mr. Trump “knows no shame.”
For now, Rob Reiner’s death remains a moment of deep loss. Many feel it should have been met with silence and sympathy. Instead, it sparked a political storm that has left many shaken.
