Income Tax Filing 2025: Income Tax Department (ITD) has released all Income Tax Return (ITR) forms for Assessment Year (AY) 2025-26 but due to the deficiency of functional e-filing utilities there confusion among taxpayers. As July 31 deadline is not very far, there may be extension for the deadline but it is not confirmed from officials of ITD.
Last Due Date and Potential Extension for ITR Filing
At current, the last due date for filing ITR is 31st July 2025. Taxpayers who do not require getting their accounts audited must file their returns by this date to avoid penalties. ITD has released all seven ITR forms for 2025-26. There is also a new ITR-U form, launched on May 19 that allows taxpayers to file or correct their returns up to 4 years.
Even after all this, taxpayers are not able to file their returns yet. The reason is that the e-filing tools which are called utilities which help submit these forms on the official income tax website are not functional at the moment. ITD has not given any official reason for this delay but it is assumed that it could be due to the various changes introduced in the ITR forms this year.
Due to non –functioning of e-filing tools has caused some people to think that the tax return deadline can be extended which is not assured yet. Most people usually file their returns in June and July, and hence ITD has enough time to solve the problem on site and to decide about extension. It has been also seen that tax return processing has become much faster in recent years. If due date is extended it may be for one month or maximum 2 months as seen in previous years.
Taxpayers Should File ITR after 15th June
Tax certificates such as form 16 etc. are received latest by June 15. Some income is also subject to TDS which is paid by payer till 31st May. At the time of filing ITR, all these information are required. Due to technology many of these information are already updated. Many glitches on website are also found if ITR is filed earlier. Hence change of incomplete information or mistakes are less if it is filed after 15th June.
Taxpayers should file ITR before due date to avoid penalties but they should not do it very early and should wait till 15th June so that they have all the information required and there is no chance of incomplete information or mistakes.
