CDS Anil Chauhan Directs Three Armed Forces To Work On Theatre Commands

The country’s new and second Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan has instructed the chiefs of the three services to move forward on the theater command.

According to the information, General Chauhan has asked the three armies to work on theater command. It is believed that some important meetings can be held for this in the coming time.

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh had announced in July this year to set up a Joint Theater Command of the three armies.

The country’s first CDS General Bipin Rawat was working on the theater command. On 31 December 2019, when General Bipin Rawat took over the post of CDS, his biggest task was to coordinate the three services.

Along with this, he was entrusted with the responsibility of forming the theater command within three years. General Bipan Rawat died in a helicopter crash in December last year.

But what is this theater command? How does it work? Why is it needed? Know the answers to all the important questions…

What does theater command mean?

The objective of Theater Command is to bring the three services under one roof to deal with future security challenges.

General Bipin Rawat was working on creating four new theater commands. The project he was working on would have played an important role in dealing with threats coming from China and Pakistan.

The best use of theater command is during war. Theater command leads to better coordination between the three army chiefs. This makes it easy to hit the enemy with precision. Not only this, the resources and weapons of the three services can be used simultaneously.

Why the need for Theater Command?

1999 India and Pakistan fought a war. This war took place in Kargil. The committees formed after this war had suggested to create the post of Theater Command and Chief of Defense Staff.

On 15 August 2019, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said that the way the look and scope of war is changing and the role of technology is increasing, that’s why thinking in pieces will not work. The entire military power of the country will have to unite and move forward together.
There are currently 17 commands in the country

At present, there are 17 different commands of the three armies in the country. Of these, 7-7 commands are with the Army and Air Force and 3 with the Navy.

At present there is only one theater command in the country. It was established in 2001 in Andaman and Nicobar.

Apart from these, there is a Strategic Forces Command which protects and handles nuclear weapons.

These 4 theaters can become commands…

  1. Western Theater Command: Under this, the Kutch area of Punjab, Rajasthan and Gujarat will come adjacent to the border of Pakistan. At present, the Western, South-West and Southern Command is guarding this area.
  2. Northern Theater Command: The mountainous area of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh will come. With this command, Pakistan and China will be monitored. Right now it comes under the Northern Command.
  3. Eastern Theater Command: Will be created to monitor the borders of China, Bangladesh and Myanmar adjacent to the Northeast. Right now these areas are being looked after by the Eastern Command of the Army and Air Force.
  4. Southern Theater Command: Will protect all three coasts – Western, Eastern and Southern. Right now it comes under the command of Navy and Air Force. Andaman’s theater command will also come under this.
