AIIMS Delhi to screen children in 12-18 age group for Covaxin trials

In a latest development, as per sources, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi from Monday (June 7) will start screening for the clinical trials of the homegrown anti-Covid vaccine, Covaxin, on children, says a report. This comes days after AIIMS Patna started the trials on children.

As per experts, a possible third wave can bring as much devastation as the second wave of the pandemic if enough people are not vaccinated against the virus, and that children could be its prime target.

COVID-19: Covaxin clinical trials for children begin at AIIMS Patna

Director of AIIMS Patna Prabhat Kumar Singh said, “AIIMS Patna has started trials in the age of 12-18 years, we have started clinical trials of Covaxin after registration for this age only.” He added,” After these trials, the age group will be 6-12 years and then 2-6 years but right now we have just started with the trials in the age group of 12-18 years.”

However, the vaccines being used in India – Covaxin, Covishield and Sputnik V – have not been approved for use on children.

A total of 525 children will be included in these clinical trials of Covaxin, who will be divided into three groups.

The first group will have 175 children aged between 12 and 18 years while the second group will have 175 children aged between 6 and 12 years. Group 3 will have another 175 children aged between 2 and 6 years.

All 525 volunteers will receive two doses of the Covaxin vaccine through the intramuscular route. The second dose of Covaxin will be administered after 28 days.
