CoWIN Data Breach: Bihar Man Arrested for Telegram Bot That Leaked Vaccination Information

CoWIN Data Breach: A guy from Bihar has been detained by the Delhi Police Special Cell for allegedly releasing information from CoWIN, the Indian government’s online platform for registering for the Covid-19 immunisation. According to the authorities, the accused was apprehended at his home after developing a Telegram bot that distributed private information about users. According to the authorities, his mother, a healthcare worker in Bihar, is also being questioned. According to sources, a minor has also been detained in connection with the case.

Details of Beneficiaries Potentially Compromised

Data of beneficiaries registered on the CoWIN platform may have been compromised, according to claims that appeared last week. A Telegram bot had gained access to the data, which showed the beneficiary’ gender, date of birth, Aadhaar information, address, vaccination centre, etc. The Telegram bot was not utilising CoWIN’s API, according to a news release from the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on June 12. Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, stated that the CoWIN site was not “directly breached” after the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In), the official cyber security organisation, evaluated the claimed breach. According to the authorities, the bot was exploiting “previously compromised databases.”

Investigation into CoWIN Data Breach Intensifies

The Telegram platform was ordered by the Delhi Police to provide information about the bot and its author after they claimed to have looked into the situation with CERT-In. “Technical monitoring allowed for the identification of the suspect. He was taken into custody while at home in Bihar. We believe he used his mother’s assistance to get past the security. He built a bot and distributed it via Telegram. We are aware that he didn’t sell the data to any particular person. He succeeded in trying to hack the system. He placed all the information online as he realised he could. We don’t believe he had any other hidden agendas, the officer stated.
