Gajraj AI: To avoid train and elephant collisions, Indian Railways created “Gajraj,” an AI-based software. When there is any suspicious activity on or around the rail tracks, the locomotive pilot is notified by the native software through the use of optical fibre cable (OFC). Read on to learn more.
Indian Railways launches Gajraj AI
To protect elephants from train-related mishaps, Indian Railways developed the Gajraj AI programme as an armour system. In states like Assam, West Bengal, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Jharkhand, artificial intelligence software is intended to be put along 700 kilometres of railway tracks.
How does it work?
Elephant movements create pressure waves, which Gajraj Suraksha detects when they pass over the tracks. Officials disclosed the specifics of the mechanism’s operation, stating that when elephants walk, the optical fibres pick up vibrations from their footsteps. Elephants can be detected by the system up to 200 metres before they appear on the track, thanks to these vibrations that cause signals to be sent across the optical fibre network. Upon detecting movement along the rails, the OFC-based Intrusion Detection System notifies station masters through alerts.
The network is built in a way that allows it to pinpoint the elephant’s location and notify station masters in the area. This enables them to quickly notify drivers of locomotives in the impacted areas.
Train collisions with elephants are avoided because to this prompt communication, which makes it possible to slow down or halt trains.

Elephants hitting trains on railroad lines has been a persistent and worrisome issue in several parts of India. States with large elephant populations are particularly affected by this. An estimated twenty elephants die on railway lines every year as a result of accidents. Indian Railways wants to proactively avoid elephant-related incidents on railway tracks by putting the Gajraj AI programme into practise.
