MCD elections 2022: More women than men in BJP’s first list for Dec 4 MCD polls

MCD Elections 2022: Delhi BJP on Saturday released its first list of 232 candidates for Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) polls. Elections to the civic body will be held on December 4. The party has given more representation to women candidates than men. There are 126 women and 106 men in the list.

The party held back names on 18 seats “due to some disputes”, according to a senior party leader. These 18 names will be declared on Sunday night, after “evaluating” some vital issues, said BJP’s MCD election management committee chief Ashish Sood.

52 ex-councillors

The party has retained 52 former councillors, including nine former mayors. Three former Assembly poll candidates also figure in the list for the polls results of which will be announced on December 7. The last day to file nominations is November 14.

Former Mayor of the erstwhile North Delhi Municipal Corporation, Raja Iqbal Singh, is one of the prominent faces in the list. He supervised the bulldozer demolition drive at the violence-hit Jahangirpuri in April this year. Singh will contest from the Mukherjee Nagar ward. He earlier represented G.T.B Nagar, which was merged during the delimitation exercise. The exercise saw  reduction in total number of municipal wards from 272 to 250.

Others in the list include Inderjeet Sehrawat, former leader of the House at the erstwhile South Delhi Municipal Corporation, who will contest from his previous seat of Mahipalpur.

Congress rebel

Rebel Congress councillor from Govindpuri ward Chander Prakash, who joined the BJP just before the list was released, has been fielded from the same seat. In 2017 civic polls, he defeated BJP’s Ravinder Kumar.

Some aspirants who did not find their names in the list, were disappointed. “It is the party’s decision, I have been working tirelessly for years but I suppose this was not taken into account,” said a former Mayor, who did not wish to be named.
