Nichelle Nichols: the lady who essayed the role of Lieutenant Nyota Uhura in Star Treck, passes away at 89!

Nichelle Nichols: Nichelle Nichols, famous for portraying communication officer Uhura in the original Star Trek series died at the age of 89 on Saturday night in Silver City, NM. Nichelle’s death was confirmed by Gilbert Bell, her talent manager and business partner of 15 years.

The actress whose role as Lieutenant Nyota Uhura in the series made her more famous and one of the first black actresses all over the US to play in authority.

Her son Kyle Johnson posted on Facebook and wrote, “I regret to inform you that great light in the firmament no longer shines for us as it has for so many years. Her light, however, like the ancient galaxies now being seen for the first time, will remain for us and future generations to enjoy, learn from, and draw inspiration.”

Several Hollywood stars who worked with Nichols are left heartbroken as they came to know about her death. “A remarkable woman in a remarkable role. Nichelle, you will be deeply missed. Sending much love and respect”, Director JJ Abrams wrote on Twitter. 

Nichols has also been employed by Nasa in order to motivate more women and African-Americans to become astronauts.
