Amid border dispute: FIR has been registered against Assam CM

Amidst the ongoing border dispute between the two northeastern states (Assam and Mizoram), the Mizoram Police has registered an FIR against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. In this case, apart from six top officials of the Himanta Biswa Sarma administration, about 200 unidentified police personnel have also been named.

The policemen against whom the case has been registered include an Inspector General (IG), a Deputy Inspector General (DIG) and a Superintendent of Police (SP). Apart from these, Cachar District Deputy Commissioner has also been nominated. The case has been registered at Vairengte police station in Kolasib district of Mizoram, which borders Cachar in Assam.

The two states have had differences over the border for decades, but the dispute that erupted this week has taken a new form. On Monday, violence broke out in the border area between these two districts, in which six Assam policemen were killed and several others were injured. Both sides have accused each other of inciting violence.

However, after Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s appeal to the Chief Ministers of both the states, an uneasy calm prevails in the violence-affected areas. The Central Reserve Police Force has increased its deployment in these areas, with five companies (total 500 soldiers) of central forces standing between the police forces of Assam and Mizoram.
