SC-appointed panel seeks action against ex-minister against illegal activities in Corbett Tiger Reserve

The ‘Central Empowered Committee’ (CEC) of the Supreme Court has accused former Uttarakhand Forest Minister Harak Singh Rawat and the then Divisional Forest Officer for illegal activities including the construction of Tiger Safari in 2021 in Pankhro and Morghatti forest areas of Kalagarh Forest Division of Corbett Tiger Reserve. Officer (DFO) Kishan Chand convictedordained.In its report filed in the Supreme Court on Tuesday on the petition of advocate Gaurav Kumar Bansal, the CEC has said that Rawat and Kishan Chand are guilty for the construction of Tiger Safari and other illegal work in Pankhro and Morghatti forest areas.

Committee has issued notice to the Supreme Court

Holding Rawat responsible for the irregularities committed by Kishan Chand in the report, the committee has issued notice to the Supreme Court and approved appropriate action by giving him an opportunity of hearing. It has also approved the Vigilance Department of Uttarakhand to continue the legal proceedings against the forest officials involved in the said illegal disturbances.

The CEC has mentioned a very serious fact on page 94 of its report and has said that even when the media was reporting all kinds of disturbances in Pankhro and Morghatti, the then Chief Wildlife Warden and the State Government did not take action against the culprits. Forest area ranger Brij Bihari Sharma and the then DFO Kishan Chand have been sent to jail on the charges of the said irregularities while the then Chief Wildlife Warden Jhabar Singh Suhag has retired. Suhag was also suspended before retirement.

Harak Singh Rawat, one of the tallest leaders of the state, was the Forest Minister in the previous BJP government. He was expelled from the party by the BJP ahead of the 2022 assembly elections, following which he joined the Congress.
