The recent Bollywood film Kesari Chapter 2 is in the middle of a political storm in West Bengal. The film has been accused of misrepresenting key freedom fighters from the state, triggering backlash from the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and leading to an FIR against its producers.

The movie features Akshay Kumar, R Madhavan, and Ananya Panday. It has been produced by Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions and directed by Karan Singh Tyagi. The film is based on the book The Case That Shook the Empire. A particular scene has caused outrage after Khudiram Bose was shown as “Khudiram Singh” and Barindra Kumar Ghosh as “Birendra Kumar” from Amritsar.

FIR Filed Against Kesari Chapter 2 Makers, Mamata Targets BJP

An FIR has been filed at the Bidhannagar South police station against seven producers under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. TMC leaders claim the film distorts facts and disrespects Bengal’s history.

Kunal Ghosh and Arup Chakraborty of the TMC held a press conference condemning the film. Ghosh said it was a conspiracy to erase Bengal’s role in the freedom movement and questioned how the film got past the censor board.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also took aim at the filmmakers. Without naming the film directly, she said, “There are attempts to undermine the role played by the Bengali revolutionaries during the independence struggle. We condemn this. BJP has been targeting Bengal and our cultural heritage.”

The TMC claims this is not an isolated incident. They allege that the central government has tried to diminish Bengal’s historical and cultural identity in multiple ways.

BJP Responds To The Allegation

BJP MP Samik Bhattacharya pushed back, saying, “In many films, names of real people are changed. What does the BJP have to do with this?” He accused the TMC of making a political issue out of a creative choice.

But the criticism isn’t limited to politics. Bengali actor Ritwick Chakraborty slammed the film for what he called sloppy research. He said it was clear the filmmakers didn’t pay attention to historical accuracy.

Another flashpoint is the portrayal of Hemchandra Kanungo, a revolutionary known for training others in bomb-making. The film reportedly replaced him with a fictional character named Kripal Singh, which many believe distorts the truth.
