Ponniyin Selvan II Review: Aishwarya Rai, Vikram steal the show with their performances in Mani Ratnam’s epic drama

Ponniyin Selvan 2 Review: Mani Ratnam took on a massive responsibility on his shoulders when he announced to bring to big screen Ponniyin Selvan. The film is based on the five-part novel series of the same name by Kalki Krishnamurthy. The novel is revered and remains popular to this day among people from different age groups.

The film released worldwide on April 28 to good start. Actors Vikram, Karthi, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Sobhita Dhulipala and others reprise their roles in the second installment of the epic based on the story of the Chola Dynasty. The film is an adaptation of Kalki Krishnamurthy’s.

Advantage over its prequel

PSII has an advantage over its prequel. It did not have to go through the arduous process of introducing the characters. It picks up pace from the word go and makes the experience more exhilarating.

Ponniyin Selvan II marks the fifth collaboration between Mani Ratnam and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan after Iruvar, Ravan, Guru, and Ponniyin Selvan 1.

Vikram and Aishwarya are the ehart and soul of the film. They steal the show with their performances.

Aishwarya the lucky charm and more

When asked if Aishwarya is his lucky charm, the filmmaker said during a press conference, “Filmmakers are very selfish people. Absolutely heartless and selfish, the only thing they care for is the film. However much I love her, I ask her only if I think she is right for the role. Every time I have asked her is because I have believed that she was absolutely right for the role and she has been nice enough to say yes. So, she is not just a lucky charm for me, it is her talent and her personality that was right to portray this character.”

PS2 doesn’t start off where PS1 ended. It shows who will be the heart and soul of this film — Nandini (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan) and Aditha Karikalan (Vikram).

Ponniyin Selvan: Part II is the rare sequel that matches up to the hype created by its predecessor. The Tamil filmhas been dubbed into several languages, including Hindi.

Mani Ratnam command over the plot is brilliant . He juggles battlefield action and verbal feints seamlessly. Not a shot is wasted and not a line is out of place.

AR Rahman’s songs and background score fit effortlessly into sequences that are visually stunning.
