Kidney Health: Kidneys are small organs yet they perform some of the most daunting and important jobs in the human body. Every day, they balance fluids, help control blood pressure, filter toxins from the blood and regulate minerals. When your body is blessed with excellent kidney function, these processes happen quietly in the background. However, the body starts sending early warning signals when kidney function is not balanced.
Kidney Health-Five Important Signs That Your Kidneys May Be Slowing Down
1. Changes in Urine
Undoubtedly, urine is one of the clearest indicators of kidney health. This is simply because your kidneys filter blood and produce urine, and any changes in these processes may show up here first.
DON'T MISS
- If you’ve been noticing foamy urine, it may suggest that the filtering units of your kidneys are damaged. This causes protein in the body to escape into the urine, creating a foamy appearance.
- If you’ve been noticing blood in the urine (red, pink or brownish discolouration), it’s a sign that the filters of your kidneys have been severely damaged or irritated.
- Other changes in urinary habits such as pale/dark urine or frequent urination at night require medical assistance.
2. Swelling in the Feet, Ankles, Hands or Around the Eyes
Excess sodium and fluid gets removed from healthy kidneys. When kidney function works slow or gets impaired, fluid accumulation in different tissues may be noticeable, causing swelling or puffiness under the eyes.
3. Constant Tiredness and Low Energy
Persistent fatigue and heaviness even after a relaxed day is not normal and may suggest kidney problems. Poor kidney function may cause the accumulation of waste products in the body, making you mentally foggy, feel sluggish and generally unwell. Poor kidney function may also cause non-maintenance of healthy oxygen delivery, resulting in weakness and fatigue.
4. Dry, Itchy Skin and Nausea After Eating
Poor kidney function may cause an imbalance of minerals and non-removal of toxins from the body, causing dry and itchy skin. A reduced appetite or nausea after eating could also be signs of poor kidney function.
5. Breathlessness and Repeatedly High Blood Pressure
The accumulation of excess fluid build-up in the body could make it difficult to breathe comfortably, especially when lying down or during physical activity.
Don’t forget to listen to these early warning signs and seek immediate medical intervention to protect kidney health and prevent further complications.
