7 Railway employees suspended over Balasore train accident

Balasore Train Accident: At least 7 employees of Indian Railways have been suspended on the charge of dereliction of duty leading to triple train crash in Odisha’s Balasore which claimed the lives of 293 people and injured over 1200 people on June 2. Three of the seven employees who have been suspended were arrested by the CBI during the investigation.

South-Eastern Railway General Manager Anil Kumar Mishra told the media “The CBI has arrested 3 staff till now. Currently, 7 people including the station master, traffic inspector, and maintainer have been suspended for not being alert during duty hours. Had they been alert, the tragic train mishap could have been averted.”

Inital probe

CBI had arrested senior Section Engineer (signal) Arun Kumar Mahanta, Section Engineer Mohammed Amir Khan and Technician Pappu Kumar during the initial stages of investigation in tjhe case. After their suspension on Wednesday CBI extended their remand by four days.

The initial probe by Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS), South Eastern Circle suggested that accident took place because of lapses in the signaling circuit alteration at the North Signal Goomty of the station.

The Balasore tragedy

The Balasore tragedy happened on June 2 when Coromandel Express crashed into Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express derailing most of former’s coaches. The accident claimed lives of 293 people and left over 1200 injured in its wake. The mishap was followed by investigation from two sides, the first one handled by CRS, South Easter Circle while the other one was conducted by CBI. The reports that were leaked from CRS had made strong suggestion of human error and today 7 people responsible for tragedy were suspended.
