After receiving the letter from opposition parties accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi of using probe agencies unfairly against rivals, the BJP has decided to respond by conducting a series of press meeting across nine states.

The opposition leaders' home states, including Delhi, Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, Maharashtra, Bengal, and Kerala, have organised the press conferences.

According to sources, the BJP's goal is to portray the letter signatories as corrupt politicians who are wary of being looked at.

The first of these meetings was held in the city's capital by Delhi MP Manoj Tiwari. Leaders like Suvendu Adhikari (Bengal), Sanjay Jaiswal (Bihar), Brijesh Pathak (Uttar Pradesh), and Sanjay Bandi (Bihar) have been nominated by the BJP for the other states (Telangana).

Opposition leaders wrote to Prime Minister Modi

Days after Manish Sisodia, the leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), was arrested in connection with a new alcohol policy for Delhi, the opposition leaders wrote to Prime Minister Modi. As a result of Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena's request for the CBI to look into what he called corruption in the distribution of liquor licences, the policy that had been introduced in November 2021 was revoked nine months later.

The letter, which was signed by Chief Ministers K Chandrashekar Rao, Mamata Banerjee, Bhagwant Mann, and Arvind Kejriwal among others, did not mention the Congress. Pinarayi Vijayan, the chief minister of Kerala, wrote the letter alone.

"We hope you would agree that India is still a democratic country. The blatant misuse of central agencies against the members of the opposition appears to suggest that we have transitioned from being a democracy to an autocracy," the letter said.

"Out of the total number of key politicians booked, arrested, raided or interrogated by the investigation agencies under your administration since 2014, the maximum belongs to the opposition. Interestingly, investigation agencies go slow on cases against opposition politicians who join the BJP," it alleged.

Sisodia was arrested "without a shred of evidence"

Alleging that Mr Sisodia was arrested "without a shred of evidence" Sisodia was arrested against him, the letter said: "Since 2014, there has been a marked rise in the number of raids conducted, cases lodged against and arrest of the opposition leaders. Be it Lalu Prasad Yadav (Rashtriya Janata Dal), Sanjay Raut (Shiv Sena), Azam Khan (Samajwadi Party), Nawab Malik, Anil Deshmukh (NCP), Abhishek Banerjee (TMC), central agencies have often sparked suspicion that they were working as extended wings of the ruling dispensation at the centre."

In advance of the 2024 national election, the BJP has rejected claims that arrests were made for political purposes.
