India – Canada Relations: In the midst of diplomatic strains between India and Canada, the United States has said that it has both “publicly and privately” asked the Indian government to assist in the Canadian probe concerning the assassination of Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Furthermore, the US has emphasised the importance of allowing the investigation to progress and has called for the arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the crime.

What did the US say on India-Canada Relations?

During his routine press briefing, State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller spoke on the significance of conducting a comprehensive investigation into the allegations raised by Canada. He said, “We are deeply concerned by the allegations referenced by (Canadian) Prime Minister (Justin) Trudeau. We remain in close contact with our Canadian partners.”

Continuing further, he said, “We believe it’s critical that Canada’s investigation proceeds and that the perpetrators be brought to justice. And we have publicly – and privately – urged the Indian government to cooperate in the Canadian investigation.” Previously, Canada had made allegations about the involvement of Indian authorities in Nijjar’s assassination, a claim straight-forwardly refuted by New Delhi.

India – Canada Diplomatic Relations

Diplomatic tensions persist and are escalating between Canada and India following Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau‘s allegations of the “involvement of individuals associated with the Indian government” in the killing of Khalistani leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar, who was assasinated in Surrey in June.

India vehemently rejected these accusations, referring to them as “baseless” and “politically motivated.” Subsequently, both nations expelled high-ranking diplomats from each other’s territories. The situation has attracted international scrutiny, with involvement from countries such as the United States.
