Jaipur student Neeraj Sharma rewarded Rs 38 lakh for finding bug in Instagram

New Delhi: Neeraj Sharma, a student from Jaipur, was given a reward of Rs 38 lakh by Instagram for preventing the hacking of millions of people’s social media accounts, according to news agency IANS. According to the report, Sharma discovered a problem in Instagram that allowed any user to update their account’s thumbnails without logging in or providing a password. Sharma informed Facebook and Instagram of this error, and when they confirmed it was real, they paid him Rs 38 lakh for his efforts.

Responding to the achievement, Sharma said, “There was a bug in Facebook’s Instagram, through which the thumbnail of the reel could have been changed from any account. All it required was the media ID of the account to change it no matter how strong the password of the account holder is.”

“In December last year, I started finding fault with my Instagram account. After a lot of hard work, on the morning of January 31, I came to know about the (bug) mistake of Instagram. After this, I sent a report to Facebook about this mistake on Instagram at night and received a reply from them after three days. It asked me to share a demo,” he said. 

In five minutes, Sharma corrected the mistake by replacing the thumbnail. They approved his report, and on the evening of May 11, he received a letter from Facebook informing him that they had awarded him a reward of $45,000. (about Rs 35 lakh). At the same time, Facebook also provided a bonus of $ 4500 (about Rs 3 lakh) in place of the incentive being given four months later than expected.
