Plea in Bombay HC seeks removal of Maha Governor over Shivaji remark

In response to his recent remarks referring to Maratha emperor Shivaji as “an icon of the old days,” Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari has filed petition to removed by the Bombay High Court. Additionally, it calls for the filing of a FIR against Sudhanshu Trivedi, the BJP spokesperson and governor, for allegedly saying that Shivaji had “apologised” to Aurangzeb, the Mughal king.

In his petition, Deepak Dilip Jagdev asks the court to order that the governor “should obtain a mental fitness/mental soundness certificate from psychiatrist” while the case is pending and that the governor “could be impeached if found guilty of treason, or any offence against the safety, security, or integrity of the Union.”

Made during an event in Aurangabad, Mr Koshyari’s comment triggered a political storm in Maharashtra, with activists of the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray), NCP, Congress, and other organisations staging protests for his ouster.

Earlier Nehru, Bose and Mahatma Gandhi used to be answers for who is icon: Koshyari

Mr Koshyari had said, ”Earlier, when you would be asked who is your icon, Jawaharlal Nehru, Subhas Chandra Bose and Mahatma Gandhi used to be the answers. In Maharashtra, you need not look elsewhere (as) there are so many icons here. While Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is of olden days, there are BR Ambedkar and Nitin Gadkari.”

Mr Gadkari has since made it a point to say: “Shivaji Maharaj is our god… We revere him even more than our parents.”

Additionally, BJP deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis stated, “Something that is obvious. Till the sun and moon exist, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj will continue to be revered in Maharashtra and throughout our nation. Even the governor, Bhagat Singh Koshyari, was convinced of this.” Sudhanshu Trivedi, according to him, “never made any comment that Shivaji Maharaj has apologised,” he asserted.
