On the occasion of World Wildlife Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the Gir National Park for a safari, celebrating India's wildlife heritage. Gir, the only habitat of the majestic Asiatic Lion, holds special significance for the Prime Minister, as he recalled his past efforts in conservation during his tenure as Gujarat Chief Minister.

Taking to social media, PM Modi emphasized the steady rise in Asiatic Lion population, attributing it to collective conservation efforts over the years. He also lauded the tribal communities and local women for their significant role in preserving the natural habitat of the lions, ensuring their protection and growth.

Gir’s Success Story in Lion Conservation

Gir National Park has been a model for wildlife conservation, especially for the Asiatic Lions. Over the years, the Gujarat government, in collaboration with forest officials and conservationists, has undertaken several initiatives to protect the species from threats like habitat loss, poaching, and diseases. These efforts have led to a significant increase in the lion population, reinforcing India’s commitment to wildlife protection.

Role of Local Communities in Wildlife Protection

PM Modi particularly appreciated the tribal communities and women from nearby villages who have played a key role in conservation efforts. Their active participation in afforestation, habitat preservation, and responsible eco-tourism has contributed to sustaining the wildlife ecosystem in Gir. The local population has also benefited from eco-tourism, creating a harmonious balance between conservation and livelihood.

Government’s Continued Commitment to Wildlife Conservation

The Indian government has consistently prioritized wildlife conservation, introducing policies such as the Project Lion initiative, afforestation programs, and habitat protection measures. The use of modern technology, drone surveillance, and AI-based monitoring has further enhanced conservation strategies. PM Modi’s visit to Gir on World Wildlife Day serves as a reminder of the government's dedication to environmental sustainability and biodiversity conservation.
