Rahul Gandhi: The INDIA bloc has taken its campaign against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar to Rashtrapati Bhavan. Opposition parties are seeking President Droupadi Murmu’s intervention. They have been demanding Kumar’s resignation over allegations of irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls.

Who Will Meet the President
The opposition sought a meeting for a delegation of 15 leaders, but sources said only 10 members have been permitted. Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee was expected to be part of the delegation. Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi is leading the opposition effort.
What Triggered the Move
Earlier this week, INDIA bloc MPs marched from Parliament towards the Election Commission headquarters but were stopped by police. They then staged a sit-in of around eight hours at Akashvani Bhawan. Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and several other leaders were detained at the end of the protest. Gandhi said roughly 300 opposition MPs wanted to meet the Election Commissioners and raise questions about the roll revision.
Election Commission’s Response
The Election Commission said no party had formally sought an appointment as of 4 pm that day. It said Delhi Police had informed it around 4 pm that about 240 MPs wanted to meet the commissioners and submit a memorandum. The Commission called the venue and the manner of the request “unusual” under its protocols.
Background of the Dispute
Rahul Gandhi: Gyanesh Kumar became the 26th CEC in February 2025, picked by a panel headed by PM Narendra Modi that included Amit Shah and Rahul Gandhi. Gandhi had submitted a dissent note then, objecting to the removal of the Chief Justice of India from the selection committee.
MPs have vowed a bigger protest on Thursday, signalling that the agitation will continue beyond Parliament and central Delhi.
