States barred from bidding for food grains held by Centre

The Modi government will not allow states to bid for food grains held by the Centre. Separate auction process was about to begin this month to sell 1.5 million tonnes of wheat.

States barred from bidding for food grains

In fact, the Centre’s food stock is 72.5 million tonnes, which includes a huge surplus. Open market sale of food grains is one of the anti-inflationary measures taken by the Centre. With its help, the storage of food items is also controlled by food traders and vendors.

On June 13, the Center had stopped the sale of wheat and rice to state governments from the stock of Food Corporation of India (FCI). Due to which the opposition parties are attacking the Modi government.

An official in the matter said that the new food policy of the Center has been taken after consultations among various ministries. An inter-ministerial committee meeting was held on June 8, recommending states to stop the sale. It is sealed now.

The ministry’s committee in the matter had said that there is a need for market intervention through OMSS and maintaining adequate stocks to control wheat-rice prices. In such a situation, the sale of wheat and rice under OMSS should be stopped for the state governments.
