Unqualified Contractors, Partial Repair Behind Bridge Collapse: Prosecution

Patchy renovation work done by unqualified contractors is what has been held responsible for the bridge collapse in Morbi, Gujarat. Tuesday, the prosecution informed a Morbi court that although the bridge’s cable had not been replaced, its flooring had. It further stated that the contractors hired to perform the repairs lacked the necessary training. 135 persons in all were reportedly killed in the tragedy.

Prosecutor H S Panchal cited forensic reports when he stated that forensic specialists thought the main cable of the bridge cracked because it was unable to support the weight of the new flooring.

“Though the FSL report was presented in a sealed cover, it was mentioned during the remand plea that cables of the bridge were not replaced during the renovation and only flooring was changed….. weight of the bridge increased due to the four-layered aluminum sheets for the flooring and the cable snapped due to that weight,” news agency PTI quoted Panchal as saying.

The two repair contractors, Prakash Parmar and Devang Parmar, were also claimed to be “not qualified” for the job by the court. The prosecutor emphasized that despite their ineptitude, the two were given the opportunity to repair the bridge in 2007 and again in 2022.

In order to “understand what was the motive for choosing them and at whose instance they were picked,” he stated that he was seeking custody of the accused.

Nine people had been detained by police for violating III section 304, which deals with culpable homicide that is not murder. Of these four people were remanded in police custody till Saturday.
