Bhagwant Mann greeted people across the globe on the occasion of International Mother Language Day, emphasizing the cultural and emotional significance of one’s native tongue. In his message, he highlighted that forgetting one’s mother language is akin to losing one’s identity and roots.
Bhagwant Mann: Importance of linguistic heritage
The Chief Minister stated that language is not merely a means of communication but a carrier of history, traditions, and collective memory. He described Punjabi as a priceless heritage that reflects the spirit, history, and identity of Punjab and its people. He urged citizens to take pride in their mother tongue and ensure that it is preserved and promoted for future generations.
Call to preserve Punjabi identity
Mann appealed to Punjabis living in different parts of the world to stay connected to their linguistic heritage. He stressed that globalization and migration should not weaken cultural ties, adding that language plays a crucial role in maintaining unity among communities abroad.
Encouraging younger generations
The Chief Minister also underlined the need to inspire children and youth to learn, speak, and write Punjabi. He said parents, teachers, and society must work collectively to create an environment where native languages are respected and used in daily life.
Cultural pride and unity
Reaffirming his commitment to promoting Punjabi language and culture, Mann concluded his message with a call for collective pride in Punjabi identity, stating that language, culture, and heritage together form the foundation of a strong and self-aware society.
The Chief Minister further noted that governments and institutions have a responsibility to safeguard regional languages through education policies, cultural programs, and digital initiatives. He stressed that administrative support, combined with public participation, can ensure that Punjabi continues to flourish not only in literature and arts but also in technology, media, and modern communication platforms.
He also pointed out that linguistic diversity is one of India’s greatest strengths and that every regional language contributes to the nation’s cultural richness. Promoting mother tongues, he said, strengthens social harmony and helps communities remain rooted while progressing in a globalized world.
Mann added that several initiatives are being encouraged to promote Punjabi literature, poetry, theatre, and folk traditions so that younger generations develop a deeper emotional connection with their heritage. He remarked that cultural festivals, literary events, and language awareness campaigns play a vital role in sustaining linguistic pride.
