Senior Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Punjab leader and Cabinet Minister Barinder Kumar Goyal on Wednesday hit out at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his remarks on the recent incident in Dirba, pointing out that the Congress and other opposition parties of indulging in politics over a tragic incident instead of understanding the sentiments of the affected family and local people.

Responding to Rahul Gandhi’s social media post, Minister Barinder Kumar Goyal said, “Rahul Gandhi, you have spoken about drugs and action against drugs, but I want to remind you that if any government has taken decisive action against drugs in Punjab, it is the CM Bhagwant Mann-led AAP government. Your party came to power in 2017 promising to eradicate drugs within four weeks. You had five years in government, what did you do during those five years?” he asked.

The Minister said the Bhagwant Mann government had launched an unprecedented, war-level campaign against drugs and that tangible results were now visible. He questioned why the opposition is choosing to politicise a tragic incident when it had no substantive issues left to raise against the government. “Earlier, you did politics in the name of religion and caste. Now, when those issues have failed, you have started doing politics over dead bodies. This is not the culture of Punjab,” he said.

Minister Barinder Kumar Goyal said the affected family had taken the decision to conduct the last rites of Gulzar Singh according to its own wishes, yet opposition leaders reached the spot and attempted to turn the situation into a political issue. He said that local people themselves opposed the presence of political leaders and asked them to leave. “People made it clear that their own committee had been formed and that they would handle the matter themselves,” he said.

The Minister further said that the drug menace in Punjab is the legacy of previous Congress and Akali-BJP governments, while the present AAP government was working to dismantle the drug network. “Rahul Gandhi, come to Punjab. Come to that village and see the situation yourself. Talk to the people and understand what they want and what they are saying. Sitting in Delhi and making statements does not reflect the ground reality,” he said.

Minister Barinder Kumar Goyal added, “Whenever even a small unfortunate incident takes place in Punjab, leaders of all opposition parties rush there. They have no other issue left. But the people of Punjab do not appreciate this kind of politics. Punjab believes in living together, maintaining harmony and Sarbat da Bhala,”

Barinder Kumar Goyal reiterated that neither any AAP minister nor any MLA had any connection with the incident and urged the opposition to refrain from what he termed “dirty politics”.

AAP National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann and Punjab Prabhari Manish Sisodia hit out at Rahul Gandhi for indulging in politics over a death, asserting that the Bhagwant Mann government is fighting a decisive battle against the drug menace in Punjab and working to clean up the drug network spread under the Congress, Akali Dal and BJP. The AAP Chief categorically rejected any connection of any government minister or MLA with Gulzar Singh’s death, urging Rahul Gandhi to refrain from what they termed “dirty politics” over the tragedy.

AAP National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal also shared a video on social media platform X showing Congress leaders visiting Gulzar Singh’s village and indulging in “dirty politics.” Replying to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, the AAP Chief stated: “Rahul ji, the Punjab government is fighting a decisive war against drugs. Who brought drugs to Punjab? Your Congress government brought them. The Akali Dal and BJP governments brought them.”

He pointed out, “For the first time, a state in the entire country is waging such a war against drugs. Today, the Punjab government is trying to clean up the drug menace spread by the Congress, Akali Dal and BJP.”

The AAP Chief further wrote, “I am deeply saddened that a leader like you is indulging in dirty politics over a dead body. Even your MLAs went to that village yesterday to politicise this person’s death, but the villagers drove them out. Watch this video. They did so because what you have written is absolutely false. I request you to visit this village yourself as well. No minister or MLA of our government has anything to do with this person’s death. Please do not indulge in such dirty politics.”

Meanwhile, CM Bhagwant Singh Mann stated: “Rahul Gandhi ji, do not do politics over dead bodies. Punjabis do not like this kind of politics. Look at this: when Congress leaders went to the victim’s village and tried to indulge in the same dirty politics, the people drove them away. In this case, the police have already arrested all the accused based on the identification provided by the family. The Akali Dal, BJP and Congress governments have been responsible for spreading drugs in Punjab. Under my government, no drug trafficker will be spared.”

AAP Punjab Prabhari Manish Sisodia stated: “Rahul Gandhi, who considers Sajjan Kumar a role model, were you not ashamed to lie over the body of a poor Dalit labourer? Gulzar Singh ji’s son is saying on camera, ‘My father was not pressured by the minister.’ You did not listen to the son or read the FIR. You simply picked up a video of a dying man and launched an attack on Punjab. You claim to be fighting drugs, yet you have turned even a labourer’s death into a political opportunity. Shame on you. Forget about apologising to the soul of the deceased for now. You should immediately apologise to his son.”

Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Wednesday called for closer collaboration with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) to accelerate sustainable crop residue management, strengthen horticulture through knowledge and technology exchange, and build a skilled workforce to drive industrial growth in the state. During a meeting with a CII delegation, the Chief Minister emphasised sustainability, resource efficiency, climate resilience and green technology for the benefit of farmers, while pitching focused efforts in the Malwa region, particularly Sangrur and Barnala, along with new skill and technology initiatives including the proposed Multi-Skill Training Institute in Ludhiana and Centre of Excellence for Technical Textiles with an ultra-modern laboratory in Jalandhar.

Sharing a few snippets from this meeting, CM Bhagwant Singh Mann stated on X: “Today, I had an important meeting with the Chairman of CII Northern Region in Chandigarh. During the meeting, we held a detailed discussion on industrial development in Punjab, attracting new investments, and creating maximum employment opportunities for the youth. Our government is continuously working to make Punjab the country’s best industrial hub and create a conducive environment for businesses. We are fully committed to strengthening Punjab’s economy.”

Chairing a meeting with a CII delegation here today, CM Bhagwant Singh Mann said, “It is imperative for the Punjab government and CII to join hands on this thrust area to check environmental pollution. The focus should be on sustainability, resource efficiency, climate resilience and green technology, thereby benefiting farmers on one hand and making Punjab clean, green and pollution-free on the other.”

The Chief Minister called upon CII to scale up these efforts in the Malwa region, particularly Sangrur and Barnala, where the Parmal variety of paddy is cultivated, apart from other parts of Punjab. “Punjab is committed to adopting sustainable and technology-driven solutions for crop residue management. There is a need for the government, industry and other stakeholders to work together to ensure that farmers get practical, affordable and effective solutions while the state moves firmly towards a cleaner and greener future,” he said.

The Chief Minister assured full support and cooperation to CII for facilitating the visit of the World Horticulture Centre to India during CII Agro Tech India 2026. “Punjab would be immensely benefited from such visits through the exchange of knowledge and expertise in both the agriculture and industrial sectors,” he added.

CM Bhagwant Singh Mann also advocated further knowledge exchange and technology collaboration to strengthen Punjab’s horticulture sector and benefit the farmers of the state. He also laid emphasis on strengthening industrial and urban infrastructure across key focal points to improve ease of doing business and quality of life.

The Chief Minister said that modern and well-planned infrastructure is essential for improving ease of doing business, reducing costs and attracting investment to the state. “The Punjab government is committed to ensuring reliable and quality power supply to industrial areas, particularly during peak demand periods, besides addressing critical infrastructure bottlenecks affecting industrial operations,” he added.

CM Bhagwant Singh Mann also assured full support and cooperation to CII for setting up its proposed Multi-Skill Training Institute (MSTI) in Ludhiana, adding that such an initiative is the need of the hour. “The proposed Multi-Skill Training Institute will help create a pool of skilled manpower in Punjab to meet the requirements of local industry while opening new vistas of gainful employment for the youth. Skill development aligned with emerging industrial needs is crucial for strengthening Punjab’s economic growth,” said the Chief Minister.

The Chief Minister further said that CII should explore the feasibility of setting up a Centre of Excellence for Technical Textiles in Punjab, along with an ultra-modern laboratory in Jalandhar. He also stressed the need to establish a special Skill Centre for Defence Manufacturing Industries to provide trained manpower and give further impetus to economic activity in the state.

The meeting focused on strengthening government-industry collaboration across agriculture, crop residue management, horticulture, infrastructure, skill development and emerging industrial sectors, with the shared objective of accelerating sustainable growth and creating greater opportunities for the people of Punjab.

According to the minister, Project Jeevanjyot is being implemented through District-Level Task Forces across Punjab. These teams are undertaking focused interventions to rescue children involved in begging and connect them with appropriate rehabilitation and welfare support.

Dr. Baljit Kaur said the campaign is part of the government’s broader efforts to safeguard children from exploitation and ensure that they have access to opportunities necessary for their development and education.

The minister also shared details of the districts from where the highest number of children were rescued during the special campaign. Tarn Taran recorded the highest number with 10 rescued children, followed by Amritsar with 9, Ludhiana with 7 and S.A.S. Nagar with 5.

The government said that rescuing children from begging is only one part of the initiative, with subsequent efforts focused on rehabilitation and reconnecting them with education and a more secure future.

The campaign also seeks to strengthen coordination at the district level so that vulnerable children can be identified and provided timely assistance. The involvement of district-level task forces is intended to make the implementation of Project Jeevanjyot more effective across the state.

The Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath government is set to launch the 9th National Nutrition Month on September 9, with a focus on strengthening awareness around nutrition, health and care for women and children across the state.

The month-long campaign will be observed from September 9 to October 8, 2026, and aims to increase awareness among pregnant and lactating women, children, adolescent girls and their families about the importance of proper nutrition and healthcare.

National Nutrition Month to Promote Maternal and Child Health

The state government said that under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, continuous efforts are being made to strengthen maternal and child health and improve nutrition outcomes in Uttar Pradesh.

A key focus of the campaign will be the development of Anganwadi centres as stronger centres for nutrition and child development. The initiative will be promoted under the resolve of ‘Hamari Anganwadi, Hamari Zimmedari’, emphasising greater attention towards the role of Anganwadi centres in community-level nutrition and childcare.

The government said that public participation will be encouraged to ensure that the message of proper nutrition reaches families across the state. Greater awareness about healthy nutritional practices is expected to support positive changes in people’s everyday behaviour.

The campaign will also focus on creating awareness about the nutritional needs of different groups, particularly mothers, young children and adolescent girls. The government said that improved awareness and behavioural change can play an important role in addressing malnutrition.

The Uttar Pradesh government has reiterated its objective of building a healthy generation and a malnutrition-free Uttar Pradesh through sustained awareness, community participation and stronger nutrition-related initiatives.
