Kanye West strengthens his Presidential Campaign, files to appear on Louisiana ballot

After announcing his presidential bid on Independence Day in June, rapper Kanye West on Friday filed paperwork to appear on the Louisiana ballot in November election.

West, who filed the paperwork just ahead of the deadline, has announced himself as a candidate of ‘The Birthday Party’ along with declaring Michelle Tidball as his running mate.

Besides West, 10 more third-party or independent presidential candidates have filed to appear on the Louisiana ballot.

Kanye West have been proposing the idea of running for US President for years now, while many of the US citizens considered it merely a publicity stunt, the rapper on July 4 shocked one and all by announcing his bid in a tweet. His campaign submitted papers to the Federal Election Commission to run within two weeks of his announcement.

However, his campaign has failed to meet deadlines to make it on the presidential ballot in several other states, including Wisconsin.

Meanwhile, Louisiana officials have not reviewed filings yet. The state, unlike others, does not require independent candidates to collect thousands of signatures to file a nomination to appear on the ballot.

As per a report of The Advocate, West in his filing listed a post box office in Cody, Wyoming, as his campaign’s address. His running mate, Tidball, who is a self-described “biblical life coach” resides in Wyoming, moreover, West also owns a mansion in the state.

West, who is a dedicated Trump supporter, said in an interview earlier this month he’s “not denying” that his campaign seeks to hurt Biden’s presidential bid.

Thousands gather for pool party in Wuhan, the former epicentre of covid-19 pandemic

Wuhan, the former epicentre of novel coronavirus, now seems to have completely gotten over the Covid-19 pandemic. While the world continues to maintain social distancing as a mean to combat the virus, thousands were able to gather for a pool party without any precautionary measures whatsoever in Wuhan.

In a very unconventional 2020 way, Wuhan hosted HOHA Water Electrical Musical Festival over the weekend and images from the event clearly show that it was one of a kind cheerful weekend.

While thousands of people wearing swimsuits crammed into the Wuhan Maya Beach Water Park, others were spotted hanging out at the bar. The massive pool party, completed with a DJ on turntables, had people dancing to the toe in colourful attires.

As per the reports, the visitors were given temperature and security checks on arrival.

In Wuhan, life has gradually gone back to normal after 76- day strict lockdown in early April. In mid-May, the city had recorded six new cases in a residential community and rolled out a quick contact tracing program. And not to much surprise, they clearly succeeded in their technique as the city hasn’t registered any new case since then. They tested more than 6.5 million people in just nine days. That’s a huge number if we compare it to the number of samples tested in India, which is now the third-worst hit country by the pandemic.

However, Sanjaya Senanayake, associate professor in infectious diseases at the Australian National University, cautions that even though most of Wuhan’s citizens have been tested, the risk of transmission is still alive. “The problem is we haven’t eradicated Covid-19, and what that means is that as long as its not eradicated, there’s still the risk of having it introduced, whether from overseas or elsewhere,” he told the BBC.

Wuhan’s lockdown began to ease in March and was officially lifted on April 8. There have been over 89,400 cases of coronavirus reported in China with 4,703 casualties.

India Rejects Reference To Jammu And Kashmir In China-Pak Statement

India has rejected the reference to the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir in the joint press release of the China-Pakistan Foreign Ministers’ Strategic Dialogue issued on Friday and reiterated its concerns on the projects in the China Pakistan Economic Corridor that fall in Pak-occupied-Kashmir.

“The Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir is an integral and inalienable part of India and we expect the parties concerned to not to interfere in matters that are internal affairs of India,” Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Anurag Srivastava said.

A joint statement issued after the Wang-Qureshi talks said the Pakistani side briefed the Chinese delegation on the situation in Jammu and Kashmir, including its concerns, position and current urgent issues.

“The Chinese side reiterated that the Kashmir issue is a dispute left over from history between India and Pakistan, which is an objective fact, and that the dispute should be resolved peacefully and properly through the U.N. Charter, relevant Security Council resolutions and bilateral agreements. China opposes any unilateral actions that complicate the situation,” according to the joint statement.

Mr Srivastava in response said, “India has repeatedly conveyed its concerns to both China and Pakistan on the projects in so-called China Pakistan Economic Corridor, which are in the territory of India that has been illegally occupied by Pakistan.”

The Pakistan foreign minister went to China after receiving little comfort from Saudi Arabia and OIC regarding taking up the Kashmir issue at the international level.

Beijing had adopted issued a similar position immediately after New Delhi scrapped Kashmir’s special status in August last year. Since then, China has also sought to raise the Kashmir issue at the UN Security Council on Pakistan’s behalf several times, but without much success.

Rahul Gandhi launches fresh attack on government over Rafale deal; BJP hits back

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who has repeatedly accused the Centre of corruption in the Rafale jet deal on Saturday made a fresh attack on the government over the Rafale fighter aircraft deal, prompting Union Minister Piyush Goyal to hit back saying he is welcome to fight the 2024 general elections on the issue.

Gandhi quoted a source-based news report which claimed that the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) has submitted its performance audit on defence offset contracts to the government with no mention of any offset deals related to the purchase of Rafale aircraft.

“Money was stolen from the Indian exchequer in Rafale,” Gandhi alleged in his tweet without elaborating.

In a sharp retort, Goyal, who is Railway Minister and a senior BJP leader, claimed that many in the Congress have confided that Gandhi’s obsession with Rafale is damaging the party.

“Many of Rahul Gandhi’s Congress colleagues confide in private that Rahul’s obsession with Rafale to wash off his father’s sins is damaging the party. But if someone is wanting to self-destruct, who are we to complain? We invite him to fight the 2024 elections on Rafale,” Goyal tweeted.

Reacting to the controversy, Sitharaman said the CAG report on Defence Offset Performance will be tabled in the forthcoming session of Parliament.

As per the report, the Defence Ministry told the CAG that Dassault would be sharing details related to offset contracts only after three years of the deal. Notably, Reliance Defence of Anil Ambani group had bagged an offset contract as part of the Rafale fighter jets deal.

India last month received its first batch of new multi-role fighter aircraft in two decades with the arrival of five Rafale jets.

The Rafale is a twin-jet fighter aircraft able to operate from both an aircraft carrier and a shore base. The fully versatile Rafale is able to carry out all combat aviation missions

Earlier, Rahul Gandhi asked Centre three questions on Rafale after first batch of fighter jets lands in India, he repeated the questions that he had asked the government ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

India will never get an opener like Rohit Sharma: Sunil Gavaskar

Former Indian opener and captain Sunil Gavaskar has praised limited overs vice-captain Rohit Sharma. Gavaskar said that he would be proud to bat like Rohit in limited overs cricket.

Many experts and former players see Rohit Sharma as the greatest opener in One Day cricket. Rohit Sharma is opening the innings for Indian since 2013 Champions Trophy. His numbers as an opener has totally changed the perception of Indian cricket for Rohit Sharma, who was always considered as the Number 5 or Number 6 batsman before 2013.

Although Rohit Sharma had opened three times in 2011, but after that when he got a chance again, he did not look back. After scoring 83 against England in Mohali, he also started the innings in the 2013 Champions Trophy and his journey started.

In the latest episode of India Today Inspiration, Sunil Gavaskar said, “The way you see Rohit Sharma batting in ODI cricket, you have to bat before the over … that’s how I wanted to play.”

Gavaskar admitted, ‘The circumstances and certainly the lack of confidence in my ability did not allow me to do so. But when I see the next generation doing this, I feel very happy. I like to see the next generation because you see progress there.

He said, ‘Rohit’s batting style is not the answer for playing comfortably against both pace and spin. He is arguably the best batsman in ODIs after Virat Kohli.

33-year-old Rohit Sharma has scored 27 centuries as an opener in ODIs, while he has 4 centuries in T20 International, which is the highest in this international format.

TikTok to challenge Donald Trump’s crackdown in court

TikTok on Saturday said it will challenge the Donald Trump administration in court over app’s crackdown in the United States. The wildly popular short-form video app has been accused of breaching US users’ private data, causing a security threat to the nation.

As the trade war between the two worl superpowers – China and US, continues, president Donald Trump on 6 August signed an executive order stating giving Bytedance, the Chinese firm who owns TikTok, 45 days to sell its operations to an American company.

“Even though we strongly disagree with the administrtion’s concerns, for nearly a year we have sought to engage in good fought to rovide a constructive solution,” TikTok said in a statement.

“What we encountered instead was a lack of due process as the administration paid no attention to facts and tried to insert itself into negotiations between private businesses. To ensure that the rule of law is not discarded and that our company and users are treated fairly, we have no choice but to challenge the executive order through the judicial system,” it said.

Trump has claimed that TikTok has been used as a spy by China to track the locations of federal employees in the US, and observe corporate business. Beijing has denied the accusations time and again.

TikTok has been in talks with a number of US tech giants including Microsoft and Oracle to sell its US operations.

The Trump administration has also given ByteDance 90 days to dispossess the app before it gets banned in the US.

Meanwhile, TikTok has said it will file its suit next week amid the soaring tension with US administation.

Coronavirus update: India’s covid-19 tally crosses 3 million mark

With fresh additions, India’s total coronavirus toll crossed thirty lakh mark on Sunday. As per the latest figures, the country reported 70,812 fresh infections in past 24 hours, taking its total number of infections to 30,41,463. With 914 new deaths on Saturday, the total number of patients who lost their lives to Covid-19 in India reached 56,837.

India became the third country in the world, after the US and Brazil, to record more than 3 million covid-19 cases. The number of cases in the country continue to rise as pathogen find hotspot across the country, halting the efforts by the government to curb the virus.

However, with increased number of cases, India’s recovery rate has ascended to 74.69 per cent and the fatality rate has also dropped further to 1.87 per cent, the Union Health Ministry stated.

Over the past few weeks, India has also ramped up its testing process. On Friday, a total number o 10,23,836 samples were tested, the highest done in a day so far. Now, the cumulative total of tested sample stands at 3,44,91,073.

Meanwhile, in other news, Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan on Saturday said that India’s first vaccine against the novel coronavirus will most likely be available by the end of this year.

“One of our COVID-19 vaccine candidates is in the third phase of the clinical trial. We are very confident that a vaccine will be developed by end of this year,” Dr Harsh Vardhan said.

“I am happy to say that in the eighth month of the battle, India has the best recovery rate of 75 per cent. A total of 2.2 million patients have recovered and gone home and another seven lakh are going to be cured very soon. We started with only one testing laboratory in Pune but we scaled up our diagnostic capabilities and strengthened our testing capacity. Today, India has 1,500 testing labs for COVID-19 and on Friday we tested over one million samples” the minister added.

Globally, 22,949,234 people have been infected with the virus so far, including over 7.9 lakh who have succumbed to it. The United States followed by India and Brazil remains the worst hit country.

Israel Approves New Groundbreaking COVID-19 Testing Method

The Israeli Health Ministry has authorized a new COVID-19 testing technique that allows labs to simultaneously evaluate nose and throat swabs taken from eight people, helping them save reagents necessary for the process, which are in short supply all over the world.

The Israeli government plans to roll out the new method in 12 labs across the country by October, anticipating that another wave of coronavirus infections could coincide with influenza season with potentially calamitous results.

“We’re doing everything we can in order to be ready,” said Ronen Walfisch, an engineer at the defence ministry who oversaw a pilot project to test the method’s efficacy. The method passed with flying colours, he said.

The standard RT-PCR test takes several hours to be processed. This, combined with the time taken to collect and transport samples, means the result may sometimes take over a day to come. But pool testing has come to be a preferred method in low-prevalence areas for its efficacy.

If a pool tests negative, then the need for conducting separate tests again is eliminated. However, if the pool tests positive, it means that one of the samples is Covid-19 positive. Further tests are then conducted to determine which patient is positive.

In a study published Friday in the journal Science Advances, Shental and his colleagues, Tomer Hertz and Angel Porgador of the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, report that their method — called P-Best, for Pooling-Based Efficient SARS-CoV-2 Testing — successfully detected positives in pools of as many as 48 samples. The method accurately screened 1,115 health care workers with just 144 tests, the study found.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday held a substantial meeting with senior ministers and officials on ways to strengthen toy manufacturing in India and encouraged the start-ups and youngsters to focus on innovations in the sector.

PM Modi said India is home to numerous toy clusters and thousands of artisans who manufacture indigenous toys which not only have cultural connect but also helps in building life-skills and psychomotor skills among children at an early age. He said such clusters should be promoted through innovative and creative methods.

It was informed that Indian toy market has huge potential and can bring a transformative modification in the industry by boosting ‘Vocal for Local’ under AatmaNirbhar Bharat campaign.
