Bharat Bandh: Here’s everything you need to know about the shutdown called by farmers

The ‘Bharat Bandh’ – a nationwide shutdown called by protesting farmers against agricultural related laws will be practised today from 11 am to 3 pm. The Bharat Bandh has not been forced and it is up to vendors/sellers whether they want to support the movement or not. However, overall bus, train and other transport services in many states are likely to be affected. In many states, including Haryana and Delhi, where protesting farmers have camped, police has re-routed traffic to facilitate commuters.

Here’s some main points

*Many mandis(wholesale markets) have come out in support of Bharat Bandh with Azadpur Mandi of Delhi among others to remain shut in the capital.

*Farmers are most likely to stop buses, train and block highways, but they have assured that the movement will be peaceful and emergency services such as ambulance will not be stopped

*It is appealed to all to maintain peace in Bharat Bandh. Action will be taken against those who indulge in any forcible closure/stoppages: Rachakonda Police, Telangana

*Bank Unions have decided to show solidarity with farmers, however, they will not participate in Bharat bandh but will wear black ribbon to oppose the farm bills.

*Delhi Police have beefed up security at all borders and will be taking action against those who force anyone to join shutdown forcefully.

*Tamil Nadu, ruled by AIADMK, has denied to support shutdown. Despite many attempts by opposition, the traders’ federation has decided not to shut down. However, neighbouring state Telangana is backing the Bharat Bandh with CM K Chandrashekar Rao himself asking people to actively participate.

*Social Activist Anna Hazare on Tuesday announced a hunger strike to support agitating farmers who have called Bharat Bandh over the controversial farm laws.

North eastern states have not released advisories for today while Rajasthan, Bengal, Jharkhand, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra are expected to be severely affected.

SC slams Central government over Vistas project

Delhi police arrests five terrorists from Shakarpur area

SII becomes India’s first vaccine to seek government nod for emergency use

The Serum Institute of India became the first indigineous company to seek emergency use authorisation for Oxford COVID-19 vaccine use in the country.

This comes after the Indian arm of U.S. pharmaceutical giant Pfizer yesterday sought approval from India’s drug regulator for its COVID-19 vaccine in the country, after securing such clearance in the UK and Bahrain.

As of now the phase-3 clinical trial of Oxford COVID-19 vaccine, Covidshield is being conducted by the Pune based Serium Institute and Indian Council of Medical Research in various parts of country.

According to ICMR, the Serum Institute of Indian has already manufactured 40 million doses of vaccine under the stockpiling license obtained from Drugs Controller General of India.

Fourth Phase of DDC Polls shown positive voter turnout

The fourth phase of District Development council elections in Jammu and Kashmir has ended today. More than seven lakh voters will decide the fate of 249 candidates contesting in the fourth phase DDC elections.

The polling has started from 7 AM and ended at 2 PM in 34 constituencies, 17 each in Jammu and Kashmir divisions.

In the 17 DDC constituencies of Kashmir division, 138 candidates, including 48 women, are in the fray. In Jammu division, 111 candidates, including 34 women, are contesting in this phase.

So far, the voters turn out in the first three has been positive with 51.76 per-cent in first phase, 48.62 in second phase and 50.53 percent in the third phase.

Farmers’ protest: Bollywood celebs extend support to farmers

India is currently witnessing one of the biggest protests of all time with farmers demanding Centre to take back controversial farm bills which have already been passed in the parliament. It has been a week since the farmers from across the country joined Punjab-Haryana farmers at Singhu border to show solidarity against the agriculture related laws.

To extend support to farmers, Punjabi singers joined in a social media campaign called ‘Tractor to Twitter’ wherein they raised voices against Centre’s farm laws on social media.

Diljit Dosanjh, who locked horns with actor Kangana Ranaut in the same light, was one of the firsts to voice support to farmers. The singer-turned-actor also visited farmers at Singh Border on Sunday. He was supported by Mika Singh, Ammy Virk, Hardy Sandhu and Jassie Gill.

In the recent, Bollywood celebs have also lend their support to farmers. Besides Taapsee Pannu and Swara Bhasker, who have been standing with farmers ever since the onset of protests, Priyanka Chopra, Preity Zinta and Sonam Kapoor have also urged Centre to make farmers demand meet.

Priyanka took to Twitter and said that farmers are food soldiers of country. “Our farmers are India’s Food Soldiers. Their fears need to be allayed. Their hopes need to be met. As a thriving democracy, we must ensure that this crises is resolved sooner than later,” she wrote while sharing one of Diljit’s tweet.

SP chief Akhilesh Yadav detained by police after sit-in-protest over farm bills

Police have detained Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Monday after a group of leaders led by him broke through the security cordon to protest in the light of three farm bills. Yadav, who was to take part in Kisaan Yatra, organised a dharna after the UP police blocked the road near his party office.

Peaceful demonstration is the democratic right of every individual, and the government is adamant on violating it,” he said.

On Sunday, a statement issued by SP had confirmed that the march will begin from Thathiya mandi and will end at Tirwa farmers market in the district.

“It is important to note that when Samajwadi Party was in power in UP, it had set up a potato mandi at Thathiya which was scrapped by the present BJP government… The SP supports the farmers in their struggle and it will amplify their demands with all its might,” a statement issued by the party said.
