Legal notice to Kangana Ranaut over tweet

Legal notices have been sent to Kangana Ranaut by members of the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) and Shiromani Akali Dal for her now deleted tweet.

In the tweet, she falsely identified septuagenarian farmer Mohinder Kaur, who was participating in the ongoing farmer protests, as Shaheen Bagh activist Bilkis Bano. She had also claimed that the two women are being paid Rs 100 to protest.

The legal notice said that when her premises were demolished she had used social media to gather solidarity from her fans stating that her fundamental rights have been violated. Similarly, the right to peacefully protest is a part of the farmers’ rights under the Constitution of India and she cannot claim a right to demean and insult the farmers, the notice added.

SAD National Spokesperson Manjinder Singh Sirsa tweeted a picture of the notice. In his tweet, he wrote that the ‘Panga’ actress must apologise for trying to imply through her tweets that the “farmers’ protests were anti-national”.

Her tweet read, “Film mafia filed many cases on me, last night Javed Akhtar filed one more, Maharashtra government filing one case every hour now congress in Punjab is also joined the gang…. Lagta hai mujhe mahan banake he dum lenge. Thank you”

Gitanjali Rao, 15-yr-old Indian-American, named 1st-ever TIME ‘Kid of the Year’

15-year-old Indian-American Gitanjali Rao, a “brilliant” young scientist and inventor, has been named by TIME magazine as the first-ever ‘Kid of the Year’ for her “astonishing work” using technology to tackle issues ranging from contaminated drinking water to opioid addiction and cyberbullying.

“The world belongs to those who shape it. And however uncertain that world may feel at a given moment, the reassuring reality seems to be that each new generation produces more of what these kids have already achieved: positive impact, in all sizes,” Time said.

Ms. Rao, 15, was selected from a field of more than 5,000 nominees as TIME’s first-ever Kid of the Year. She was interviewed by actor and activist Angelina Jolie for the TIME special.

Since a very young age, the aspiring scientist had begun thinking about how to use science and technology to bring about a social change in the global dynamics.

Speaking to TIME, she said that at 10 years of age she had first mentioned to her parents about researching carbon nanotube sensor technology, which had left her mother pretty much in a state of confusion.

At the age of 11, Rao won the Discovery Education 3M Scientist Challenge and was listed by Forbes in “30 Under 30” list for her innovations.

Rao’s latest discovery is an app called, Kindly, that detects cyberbullying at an early stage, based on artificial-intelligence technology.

When asked when she knew that science was her passion, Rao said she always wanted to put a smile on someone’s face. “That was my everyday goal, just to make someone happy. And it soon turned into, How can we bring positivity and community to the place we live?”

Rao added that she doesn’t look like “your typical scientist. Everything I see on TV is that it’s an older, usually white man as a scientist. It’s weird to me that it was almost like people had assigned roles, regarding like their gender, their age, the colour of their skin.

Badal, Dhindsa return their Padma Awards in support of farmers

Former Union Minister and five-time Chief Minister of Punjab Parkash Singh Badal returned his Padma Vibhushan award in support of farmers who are protesting against the Centre’s farm laws.

Mr Badal, whose Shiromani Akali Dal has pulled out of the NDA alliance over the farmers’ protest, said he was registering his protest against the government’s “betrayal of farmers”. “I am who I am because of the people, especially the common farmer. Today when he has lost more than his honour, I see no point in holding on to the Padma ViBhushan honour,” the Shiromani Akali Dal leader said.

Additionally, Shiromani Akali Dal Democratic chief and Rajya Sabha member Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa has also announced that he would also be returning his Padma Bhushan award in support of farmers.

“There is no politics behind returning awards. It comes from the pain of the farmers. All these people (returning awards) also have their elders at the borders protesting. I welcome everyone doing this, including Prakash Singh Badal. We only want the farmers’ unions to be satisfied. Its not only farmers now. Actors, artists, players, all of the diaspora has joined the movement,” Dhindsa added.

Brett Lee questions Cummins absence in T20Is against India

Former fast bowler Brett Lee questioned the Australian decision to rest Pat Cummins after just two matches of the recently concluded series against India.

Cummins, the fast bowling spearhead, was part of the Australian squad for the England tour in August and also played for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He has been rested for the final ODI under charge management and will not be a part of the upcoming T20 series.

He said, ‘He should not get tired after two matches. I have always found that personally the more matches I played, the better the rhythm was. ‘

India team set for T20Is with a positive approach

Team India can give a tough challenge to host Australia in the three-match T20 series starting on Friday, as it has a plethora of options. The 1-2 match in the ODI series opened up India’s weaknesses in the 50-over format. However, in the T20, India has a very balanced team. This match will be played in Canberra from 1.40 pm Indian time.

The victory in the third ODI has turned out as a tonic for the Indian team, otherwise, the ‘clean sweep’ in the ODI series would have reduced the morale of the team. T Natarajan, who performed brilliantly with debutants in Washington Sundar, Deepak Chahar, and ODI cricket, can give strength to Team India.

Sundar performed brilliantly in the IPL for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), when captain Virat Kohli used him in the power play and in the middle overs.

BCCI mulls two new teams in next IPL

The Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will be held on 24 December, in which the inclusion of two new teams in the IPL will be discussed.

The most important point in this is to make it a tournament of 10 teams by including two new teams in the IPL. It is understood that the Adani Group and Sanjeev Goenka’s RPG (owners of Rising Pune Supergiants) want to form new teams, one of which will be from Ahmedabad.

In the meeting, it will also be discussed about who will be the representative of BCCI in ICC and Asian Cricket Council. It is believed that board secretary Jai Shah will be given this responsibility.

Farmers demand special session of Parliament to abolish farm laws

Hundreds of farmers are staying put at Delhi’s borders with Haryana and Uttar Pradesh over various demands, including the repeal of the three new laws.

They have expressed apprehension that the laws would pave the way for the dismantling of the minimum support price system, leaving them at the ‘mercy’ of big corporates.

Even as the talks between the government and the agitated farmers are underway, crowd swelled at the border connecting Delhi to Uttar Pradesh in Ghazipur after hundreds of tractors entered the area to put pressure on the government to repeal the three contentious farm laws.

The farmer leaders suggested the government that a special session of the Parliament be called and the new farm laws be abolished.

“The Centre should call a special session of Parliament to repeal the three farm laws,” Krantikari Kisan Union President Darshan Pal said. He also called for burning of effigies throughout the country to protest against the Modi government and corporate houses on December 5.

Pal accused the Centre of trying to to sow discord among various farmer unions. “The government tried to show this is only the movement of farmers in Punjab,” he told reporters at Singhu on the Delhi-Haryana border, according to NDTV. “We have also decided farmer leaders from all over the country, not just Punjab, should be called for talks.”

Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar, Railways, Commerce and Food Minister Piyush Goyal and Minister of State for Commerce Som Parkash, who is an MP from Punjab, are holding talks with the representatives of the farmer groups at the Vigyan Bhawan.
