#INeverAskForIt: People uniting against Victim Blame culture

After the 2018’s MeToo Movement where women shared the stories of the sexual harassment faced by them, men and women across the countries are once again uniting against the prevalent victim-blaming culture in society.

Women from all walks of life are sharing their experiences of being blamed for the harassment they faced under the #INeverAskForIt: United to End Victim Blame, a virtual social campaign presently trending on Twitter.

In a ‘tweet-a-thon’ Monday, organised by Blank Noise — a community organisation working to eradicated gender-based and sexual violence — several people pledged to tackle victim-blaming and even shared video statements of solidarity.

Jasmeen Patheja, founder of Blank Noise, began the campaign against victim blaming in 2018 under the ‘I Never Ask For It’ banner. The primary aim of the campaign is the construction of an exhibition made up of the clothes women were wearing when they experienced any form of sexual violence.

Patheja plans to display 10,000 such items of clothing at India Gate by the year 2023.

“We envision 10,000 garments standing united at India Gate, knowing fully that it calls for being monumental,” said Patheja in an email statement.

Shiv Sena leader Priyanka Chaturvedi, Aam Aadmi Party MLA Atishi, singers Sona Mohapatra, Ankur Tewari, and journalist Barkha Dutt were among the hundreds of people who expressed solidarity to end victim-blaming and shaming in crimes against women, as part of the social media campaign #INeverAskForIt.

The social media users are coming forward and recalling what they were wearing when they faced harassment.

President-elect Joe Biden to announce his cabinet members on Wednesday

US president-elect Joe Biden, who is currently in transition period, will be announcing his tentative cabinet picks on Tuesday, according to an incoming White House chief of Staff, Ron Klain.

According to Klain, the nomination will take place in a small ceremony in the wake of covid-19 pandemic.

Even as the US president, who lost the 2020 presidential election, has refused to concede, the appointment of the new cabinet is taking place at a smooth rate, Klain said.

“You’re going to see the first cabinet picks this Tuesday. But if you want to know what cabinet agencies they are, who’s going to be in those cabinet agencies, you’ll have to wait for the president-elect to say that himself on Tuesday,” he told ABC.

“What I can confirm is that you are going to see the first of the President-elect’s Cabinet appointments on Tuesday of this week, beating, in fact, the pace that was set by (President Barack Obama’s transition team), beating the pace set by the Trump transition,” Klain said.

Jen Psaki, who oversees Biden’s nominations team, also told CNN on Sunday that Biden looks forward to make announcement on Wednesday.

“President-elect Biden will be announcing members — Cabinet nominees this week. He’s looking forward to that, to introducing members of his team to the public,” Psaki said.

Klain said that Biden and vice-president-elect Kamala Harris have been denied data on covid-19 pandemic and background information of cabinet nominees.

“I expect not just Democrats but Republicans in the Senate to be outraged they won’t have access to that information. It could take weeks for that to happen,” Psaki said while talking about Trump administration’s refusal to provide information.

Joe Biden swearing in ceremony will take place on inauguration day, 20 January. While the incoming president is usually welcomed by the outgoing president, there’re speculations that Trump will not be attending the event.

Oxford Vaccine prevents majority from getting disease

A Covid-19 vaccine developed by the University of Oxford and AstraZeneca Plc prevented a majority of people from getting the disease in a large trial, another promising development in the quest to end the pandemic.

The vaccine stopped an average of 70% of participants from falling ill, an early analysis of the data show. That’s below the high bar set by Pfizer Inc. and Moderna Inc., but effectiveness rose to 90% for one of two dosing regimes, using half a dose followed by a full one later.

The Oxford/AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine candidate’s late-stage trial results are “intriguing” and more work needs to be done on the finding that an initial half dose of the shot offers more protection, Oxford’s vaccine chief said on Monday.

Phase III trial results of the vaccine candidate found it was 90% effective if administered at a half dose and then at a full dose, or 62% effective if administered in two full doses.

“These  findings  show  that  we  have  an  effective  vaccine  that  will  save  many  lives,” Andrew Pollard, chief investigator of the Oxford Vaccine Trial, said in a statement.

“We are excited to see 90% efficacy from the half dose-full dose regimen,” an Astra spokesman said. “We see a lot of merit in this regimen and we will now start discussions with regulators into incorporating this dose combination for further clinical investigation.”

The Serum Institute of India, the world’s largest manufacturer of vaccines by volume, has partnered with AstraZeneca, the Gates Foundation and the Gavi vaccine alliance to produce more than a billion doses of a COVID-19 vaccine for global supply.

The British drugmaker’s preliminary trial results mark a fresh breakthrough in the fight against a pandemic that has killed nearly 1.4 million people and roiled the global economy.

British Prime minister Boris Johnson said it was “incredibly exciting news the Oxford vaccine has proved so effective in trials.”

AstraZeneca shares fell 1.1% in early morning trade, defying expectations for a bounce and underperforming the wider market with the FTSE 100 index rising 0.5% at the open.

UK plans to vaccinate Pfizer’s Covid-19 vaccine to its people in December

Pfizer’s covid-19 vaccine, which proved up to 95 per cent efficacy in the late stage trials, may get approval for use in UK, according to several media reports.

If reports are to be believed, U.K.’s National Health Service is eyeing the December timeline to administer vaccine in the county. As a part of its vaccine distributions strategy, it is estimated that every adult in UK might get vaccinated till April 2021.

The first one to be injected with the vaccine shots will be health professionals, essential service workers and people vulnerable to the virus including older adults. People aged between 18 and 50 will get vaccinated in January, according to the current draft plan by the officials.

British health minister Matt Hancock on Monday said that the United Kingdom plans to roll out the first doses of the vaccine before Christmas if it is declared safe and active.

We’re working very closely with the company,” Hancock told BBC TV. “We’ll be ready to roll it out as soon as it comes, we’ll be ready from the first of December, but more likely is that we may be able to start rolling it out before Christmas.”

Meanwhile, Pfizer and its German partner BioNTech has said that they are submitting data from the full phase 3 trial for scientific peer-review publication.

Last week, it was reported that Pfizer has formally asked US regulators to allow emergency use of its covid-19 vaccine as early as next month.

The companies had said that their vaccine provides good safety records, making it eligible for emergency authorization.
