Considering to introduce code of conduct for TV channels, says Prakash Javadekar

The government may introduce a common code of conduct for all TV channels along with handing over more responsibilities to the Press Council of India(PCI), said Information and Broadcasting minister Prakash Javadekar on Monday.

Addressing a webinar organised by the Press Council of India(PCI) on the ‘Role of media during the covid-19 pandemic and its impact on media’ on National Press Day, the minister acknowledged the long need of a regulatory body for TV channels while adding that a decision to bring a code of conduct will soon be materialised.

“Freedom of press is being discussed again today and I said that the way press freedom is being attacked, that is not good… Press Council of India (PCI) is another mechanism of self-regulation. Though the head is appointed by the government, it has representatives of press owners, editors, journalists, photographers and parliamentarians. But people are demanding that the PCI should be given more powers. That is also being considered,” he said.

Talking about TV news, he said that “there is no Press Council like system for TV channels, so there should be self-regulation for that” and mentioned that “there is one institution, and anyone can complain to them and they even punish the erring channels”. National Broadcasting Standards Authority is the self-regulatory body for TV news channels.

“But there are many channels that are not even members of that,” Javadekar said, adding that “they have no restrictions”. “Such a system cannot exist. People are suggesting us that we should also come up with a code of conduct which is common for all channels. We have not taken a decision, but we are considering it as well.”

The minister also added that efforts to provide a regulatory framework for the Over the Top (OTT) platforms, like Netflix and Amazon Prime, were also onboard as the streaming platforms was largely unregulated.

Talking about enhancing power of PCI, Javadekar said, “Some people are demanding that there should be more powers for the Press Council. This is being considered.”

Earlier, at the same webinar, Vice President Venkiah Naidu had also shed some light on the importance of press in India.

“Press in India has always been the vanguard of protecting and strengthening the foundations of democracy” and mentioned that “robust free and vibrant media is as important as independent judiciary in consolidating democracy and strengthening constitutional rule of law,” he had said.

India has asked Pakistan to end support cross border terror

India asked Pakistan to end support to cross-border terror and reminded it how it has hosted terrorists including Osama Bin Laden.

In a sharply-worded statement, the Ministry of External Affairs said, “Pakistani leaders have never hidden the fact that it has become a factory for producing terrorists. India is not the only neighbour to be targeted as underlined by the statements of countries similarly targeted. Distant parts of the world have seen the terror trail lead back to Pakistan.”

India has slammed a recent press conference by Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry and the Establishment, terming it “yet another futile anti-India propaganda exercise”.

Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Anurag Srivastava said, in response to a media query, said: “We have seen media reports on a press conference by the Pakistani establishment. This is yet another futile anti-India propaganda exercise.”

“The so-called claims of ‘proof’ against India enjoy no credibility, are fabricated and represent figments of imagination. This desperate attempt will find few takers as the international community is aware of Pakistan’s tactics and proof of its terror sponsorship has been admitted by none other than its own leadership,” he added.

The MEA spokesperson said: “The face of global terror, Osama Bin Laden, was found in Pakistan; Pakistan’s PM glorified him as a ‘martyr’ from the floor of Parliament; he admitted the presence of 40,000 terrorists in Pakistan; their Science and Technology Minister proudly claimed involvement and success of Pakistan, led by its Prime Minister, in the Pulwama terror attack in which 40 Indian soldiers were martyred.”

“We call upon Pakistan to end its support to cross border terrorism. Pakistani leaders have never hidden the fact that it has become a factory for producing terrorists. India is not the only neighbour to be targeted as underlined by the statements of countries similarly targeted,” he added.

The MEA spokesperson said the press conference was a deliberate attempt on the part of the Pakistani establishment to shift focus from its internal political and economic failures. It also seeks to justify cross-border terrorism, including ceasefire violations and infiltration across the LoC and the IB.

“Distant parts of the world have seen the terror trail lead back to Pakistan. Concocting documents and peddling false narratives will not absolve Pakistan of such actions. We are confident the world will hold it to account,” Srivastava said

Johnson & Johnson begins two-dose trial of its covid-19 vaccine across UK

Johnson & Johnson has begun a new third stage-trial in Britain to obtain the results of its vaccine candidate’s two-dose regimen. The trials will be conducted among thousands of volunteers across the globe, the reports suggested.

According to a mint report, the drugmaker plans to launch the vaccine trials among 30,000 volunteers for study which will be conducted in parallel to its one-dose trial that began in September among 60,000 participants.

The aim of the new two-dose regimen is to assess the efficacy of the experimental vaccine after both the first and second dose to determine if the latter provides better protection against the virus.

“The study will assess efficacy of the investigational vaccine after both the first and second dose to evaluate protection against the virus and potential incremental benefits for duration of protection with a second dose,” J&J said in a statement.

It is noteworthy that Johnson & Johnson has touted its vaccine as single dose only, however, the new 2-dose trials are purely experimental to check the efficacy.

The study being conducted in UK is aiming to recruit as many as 6,000 participants among a total of 30,000 people globally, scientists leading the UK trial said. In UK itself, the volunteers will be recruited at 17 different sites.

In September, the J&J signed an agreement of two-dose global phase III clinical trial with British government in August. However, the drugmaker is now announcing its progression into the third trials.

The company has said that if single-shot gives sustainable results, the company will be able to reach millions of people compared with its leading rivals who require two doses.

As of now, J&J is the only company across the globe to claim efficacy of the vaccine by just injecting a single shot.

According to a report of BioPharma, the vaccine is estimated to remain stable at -20 degree Celsius and at least three months at 2-8 degree Celsius.

How Indian team is gearing up for bouncy Australian tracks?

The Indian team is trying new ways to deal with the bounce and speed on Australian pitches. BCCI has posted a video on Monday, in which Ravichandran Ashwin is training batsman Lokesh Rahul with tennis ball with the help of tennis racket.

Rahul, who captained Kings XI Punjab in the IPL, was seen playing bridge shots on the balls coming over his body.

The BCCI tweeted, ‘How is it for innovation? Ashwin took the tennis racket and Rahul is facing volleys with his bat.

The extra bounce and speed in pitches on the Australian tour would be a matter of concern for Indian players. Even before this, tennis balls have been seen in practice sessions in Australia by subcontinent teams.

Cummins confident for bouncy pitches against India in ODIs

Australian fast bowler Pat Cummins expects pitches to bounce and accelerate in the limited-overs series and Test series against India, which will give Australia the advantage of playing at home.

“Hopefully the pitches will be the way we Australian players are used to,” Cricket.com.com reported quoting Cummins on Monday.

Cummins said, “Hopefully there will be a boom and bounce in the pitch so that, like India, we also get the benefit of playing at home.”

Pat Cummins

Cummins, who was part of the Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League (IPL), played in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), said that it would be beneficial for him to stay in the BioSecure bubble before the crucial series against India.

Cummins said, ‘One advantage of staying in the bio bubble in the UAE was that we didn’t have to travel much. In the normal situation that happens in the IPL, we have to catch the flight every other day. So it gets very tiring at times. ‘

Cummins said that he is feeling relieved after spending three months in the bio bubble. He, however, also said that once he joins the Australian team, he will discuss whether he should rest in the limited-overs series in Sydney and Canberra before the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
