WhatsApp introduces ‘disappearing message’ feature

Facebook’s messaging service WhatsApp Thursday introduced a ‘disappearing message’ feature that deletes messages after seven days.

To make use of the feature, users have to enable it by tapping on a contact’s name.

Announcing the feature, WhatsApp wrote in its blog, “Today, WhatsApp messages often live on our phones forever. While it’s great to hold onto memories from friends and family, most of what we send doesn’t need to be everlasting. Our goal is to make conversations on WhatsApp feel as close to in-person as possible, which means they shouldn’t have to stick around forever. That’s why we’re excited to introduce the option to use disappearing messages on WhatsApp.”

“We’re starting with 7 days because we think it offers peace of mind that conversations aren’t permanent, while remaining practical so you don’t forget what you were chatting about,” says a WhatsApp spokesperson. “The shopping list or store address you received a few days ago will be there while you need it, and then disappear after you don’t.”

Disappering messages has been among the most spotted WhatsApp features on the beta app.

The company has been testing this feature for months on the WhatsApp beta app for Android and iOS.

Disappearing messages is now rolling out for the public worldwide across Android and iOS devices starting today.

The feature will definitely be handy for the ones who are a part of multiple WhatsApp groups and are bombarded with messages on a daily basis.

Disappearing messages will also wipe out photos and videos after seven days, and while messages will disappear for both parties it’s still possible to take screenshots or just simply copy messages before they’re automatically deleted.

Covid-19 vaccine to be available at affordable prices from Jan, says Adar Poonawalla

Adar Poonawalla chief executive officer (CEO) of Serum Institute of India(SII), on Wednesday said that a vaccine to curb the covid-19 infection could be available by January 2021 after permission from regulatory bodies.

SII has collaborated with UK based AstraZeneca Plc. to manufacture millions of doses of its potential covid-19 vaccine candidate, Covishield. AstraZeneca’s vaccine developed with Oxford University has been one of the most touted vaccines around the globe as it was well-tolerated by the volunteers in the early-stage trials.

Covishield is currently in the phase 2/3 clinical trial in India and will be produced by SII for sixty low-and-middle income countries.

In an interview with Mint, Poonawalla said, “Based on the success of the trials in India and the United Kingdom, and if approvals from regulatory bodies are in place in time, then we can expect the vaccine to be available in India by January 2021, only if its proven immunogenic and efficacious.”

Talking about price of the vaccine, Mr Poonawalla said, “We are certain that it will be affordable for all.” He further mentioned that they will soon reach their target of producing 100 million doses of the vaccine candidate.

AstraZeneca and Oxford University have said that two-dose of the vaccine showed greater results among volunteers, while a single-dose injection is also being tested in trials.

Meanwhile, AstraZeneca Plc has said that Britain’s health regulator had started an accelerated review of its potential coronavirus vaccine.

“We confirm the MHRA’s (Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency) rolling review of our potential Covid-19 vaccine,” an AstraZeneca spokesman said.

In an earlier statement, AstraZeneca had said that its experimental covid-10 vaccine developed strong immune response among older adults and vulnerable groups. It also added that the vaccine did not trigger any notable adverse effects among the volunteers.

US election 2020: Biden registers victory in key state Wisconsin, Trump accuses fraud

The fates of Democrat candidate Joe Biden and his Republic rival Donald Trump remain undecided on Wednesday even as the results of most states have been announced. Trump, who registered slow electoral votes earlier, slowly gained pace as he now indulges in a neck-to-neck battle with Biden.

Biden has maintained his lead after he projected victories in two midwestern states. In Michigan, Biden led by 32,000 votes of about 5 million cast and in Wisconsin, Biden led 20,000 votes out of 3.2 million cast. Out of the two states, Wisconsin could turn out the key decider in deciding whether Trump has to pack his bags to return from White House or Biden has to pack his bags to enter the White House.

However, the US president and Republic candidate, Donald Trump, has accused fraud in the vote count and has demanded Wisconsin recount. Trump, expressing belief in his victory, in a statement said, “After a long night of counting, it is clear that we are winning enough states to reach 270 electoral votes needed to win presidency.”

Trump’s campaign manager, Bill Stepien, in a statement to Associated Press, said that the president will formally be requesting a recount in the state of Wisconsin. Stepien cited irregularities in several Wisconsin counties as the reason of disbelief.

While accusing Biden of fraud, Trump said that he has already won the elections and everything that is to be declared further will be nothing but “fraud on the American public.”

Addressing the nation at a little past 2 am on Wednesday local time, Trump said the “results have been phenomenal.” “I want to thank the American people for their tremendous support… A very sad group of people is trying to disenfranchise our support. We will not stand that. The results have been phenomenal. We were all set to get outside and celebrate. Such success. The citizens of this country has come out in record numbers, to support us.”

Biden, meanwhile, said that a legal team is ready to address if Trump moves to court to stop vote count.

Wisconsin remained a blue state for the most part until Trump registered an unexpected win in the state in 2016.

As of now, Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden is leading Donald Trump with 243 electoral votes. Trump, on the other hand, stands at 214.
