IS militants stormes Kabul University, at least 22 dies

Islamic State militants in Afghanistan stormed Kabul University on Monday as it hosted a book fair attended by the Iranian ambassador, sparking an hours-long gunbattle and leaving at least 22 dead and 22 wounded at the war-torn country’s largest school.

Afghan media reported that a book exhibition was being held at the university and attended by a number of dignitaries at the time of the shooting. None of the dignitaries were reported hurt.

The attack in Afghanistan’s capital began with an explosion at the gates of the university just before 11 a.m. Monday. Thousands of students fled, but a number trapped inside began posting to social media, describing seeing classmates gunned down.

“God give patience, my classmates martyred and wounded in front of my eyes, and I am taken hostage,” Qaseem Kohestani, a fourth-year student at the university’s public policy school, posted to Facebook.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack at Afghanistan’s largest school, but the Taliban issued a statement denying participation in the assault, which came as the insurgents continue peace talks with representatives of Kabul’s U.S.-backed government.

On Monday evening, Isis took responsibility for the attack, claiming it had targeted a “graduation gathering for judges and investigators of the apostate Afghan government”. It named two men as responsible.

Ahmad Samim, who attends the university, told journalists he saw militants armed with pistols and Kalashnikov assault rifles firing at the school, the country’s oldest with about 22,000 students.

He said the attack happened at the university’s eastern side, which houses its law and journalism faculty.

Supreme Court sided with the Black Lives Matter movement

The Supreme Court on Monday sided with the Black Lives Matter movement in throwing out a decision that allowed one of its organizers to be sued by a cop who was injured at a 2016 protest.

In an unsigned opinion, the justices sent the case back to the lower courts to further review Louisiana law, USA Today reported.

The officer wanted to hold McKesson legally accountable since he organized the event where the incident took place.

A federal appellate court previously granted the officer permission to continue with the suit because “a violent confrontation with a police officer was a foreseeable effect of negligently directing a protest.”

As Emerson Sykes, a staff attorney with the ACLU, recently told GEN: “The case has the potential to have an amazing chilling effect. If any organization can be held liable for actions of totally unconnected people, no one would organize a protest.”

“The Supreme Court has long recognized that peaceful protesters cannot be held liable for the unintended, unlawful actions of others,” said American Civil Liberties Union National Legal Director David Cole, who is representing McKesson.

“If the law had allowed anyone to sue leaders of social justice movements over the violent actions of others, there would have been no Civil Rights Movement. The lower court’s ruling is a threat to the First Amendment rights of millions of Americans.”

KEY BACKGROUND

Mckesson organized the event to protest the fatal shooting of Alton Sterling, a Black man, by at least one officer from the Baton Rouge Police Department.

The protesters gathered on the highway outside the police department, allegedly at Mckesson’s direction, according to the Supreme Court opinion.

Police officers started to make arrests and an unnamed protester threw a “piece of concrete or similar rock-like object” that hit the officer in the face causing brain trauma, according to the opinion.

If Mckesson were found to be personally liable for violence that occurred at a protest he organized, it could make activists reluctant to organize future protests despite their First Amendment right.

Priyanca Radhakrishnan becomes New Zealand’s first-ever Indian origin Minister

New Zealand got its first-ever Indian-origin minister on Monday after Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern inducted five new ministers into her executive.

Born in India, Priyanca Radhakrishnan, 41, went to school in Singapore before moving to New Zealand to further her education.

Priyanca is the daughter of Paravoor Madavanaparambu Raman Radhakrishnan and Usha. Even though she has her roots in Paravoor, most of her relatives are based in Chennai – where she was born.

Priyanca has spent her work life advocating on behalf of people whose voices are often unheard “women survivors of domestic violence, and migrant workers who have been exploited.

“Today has been an incredibly special day. I’m feeling a lot of things including an overwhelming sense of privilege to become part of our Government,” the 41-year-old Labour Party leader said.

“Huge thanks to everyone who has taken the time to message/call/text congratulatory messages- thank you all. Humbled to be appointed a Minister and I’m looking forward to working with an incredible line up of Ministerial and caucus colleagues this term,” she said in a Facebook post.

In September 2017, she first got elected as a Member of Parliament belonging to the Labour Party. Later, In 2019, she was appointed the Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Minister for Ethnic Communities.

According to New Zealand’s multi-platform news service Newshub, Ardern has appointed a ministerial lineup of several MPs for the first time in the parliament.

New Zealand’s leader appointed a Christchurch local and member of Labour Party as Minister of Energy and Resources, and housing and a former teacher Kelvin Geoffrey Davis as Minister for Education and Children.

Jacinda Ardern formed the first single-party government since 1996 with an absolute majority of seats under the country’s MMP system due to her landslide election victory.

Meanwhile, Ardern told reporters in Wellington that the next three years will be very challenging for her government, sources of Newshub confirmed. She accredited these challenges for New Zealand to the global outlook worsening and the ongoing effect of COVID-19.

Announcing the names of the new ministers, Prime Minister Ardern said: “I am excited to be bringing in some new talent, with first-hand experience in the areas that they will be working in, and reflecting the New Zealand that elected us on the 17th of October.

“Within this lineup, I’m playing to people’s strengths,” she said.

“This is a Cabinet and an executive that is based on merit but also happens to be incredibly diverse,” Ardern said, days after her centre-left Labour Party won a landslide victory in the country’s general election.

If ministers don’t deliver, they will be shown the door, Ardern warned.

At least two dead, several injured in Vienna shooting

Terrorists opened fire at several sites Monday evening in central Vienna, including in the area of a major synagogue and the offices of the Jewish community, killing up to two people, according to Austrian media reports.

Police said that several shots were fired shortly after 8 p.m. (1900 GMT) on a lively street in the city center and that there were six shooting locations.

Unverified footage on social media showed gunmen walking through the streets, apparently shooting at people at random, wounding several.

The motive was under investigation, but Kurz said the possibility it was an anti-Semitic attack cannot be ruled out, given that the shooting began outside Vienna’s main synagogue. It was closed at the time.

Several suspects were still at large after midnight, Austrian authorities said.

Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz and Interior Minister Karl Nehammer both said the incidents were a terror attack with multiple perpetrators.

“We are victims of a repulsive terror attack in the federal capital that is still ongoing,”  Kurz said hours after the gunfire erupted.

“One of the perpetrators was neutralized, but several perpetrators appear to still be on the loose,” he said. “They seem to also, as far as we know, be very well equipped, with automatic weapons. So they were very well prepared.

Vienna Police has confirmed two person has died in the shooting, several people including an officer have been injured and one suspect has been shot and killed by police.

The situation is still unfolding with police asking everyone in the city to keep their doors locked.

There were hundreds of people out in Vienna, enjoying their final night of freedom before another coronavirus lockdown comes into effect.

All of those people remain in the bars, restaurants and other venues while police continue to search for the attackers.

Mukund Narwane to visit Nepal this week

Chief of Army Staff General Manoj Mukund Narwane is on a visit to Nepal this week amidst a continuing conflict between India and Nepal. Narwane will be awarded an honorary rank of General rank during this journey. The Army Chief will meet Nepal Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli on 5 November. Experts believe that after this meeting which is being described as very important, there can be a foreign secretary-level dialogue between the two countries.
India stopped talks with Nepal earlier this year. Nepal released a new map in June this year showing many parts of India as part of Nepal. It was being told that China’s support was behind this move to incite extreme nationalist sentiments in Nepal. In the past few months, the two neighbors have softened their posture and attempted to improve relations again. In September, PM Oli decided to stop the distribution of the next school text books to be published with a revised political map of the country. Was

A top government official said, “If the talks are as expected, the India Foreign Secretary level talks and the Joint Technical Level Boundary Committee meeting can be resumed.”

General Narwane’s visit to Nepal comes at a time when PM Oli is still in the midst of a fierce power struggle within the Nepal Communist Party. The Communist Party was formed in 2018 after the merger of Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist) and Pushpa Kamal Dahal’s Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist Center.

Bihar election 2020 – Second phase of election – stakes of NDA and RJD

The second phase of Bihar assembly elections is also important for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) as well as the Grand Alliance led by the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD). Elections will be held in Madhya Bihar on November 3, which includes Tirhut, Mithilanchal and Kosi regions. In the second phase, voting will be done on 94 seats in 17 districts. This includes some remaining areas of Patna and Nalanda districts.

In 2015, the party won 20 of these 94 seats, where elections are going to be held in the second phase. Out of 71 seats in the first phase, BJP has contested on 29, while JDU on 35. This is a clear indication that the first phase election was more important to Nitish Kumar than BJP. Why is the second phase important for the ruling NDA alliance in Bihar? BJP is contesting on 46 of the 94 seats in the second phase. Out of the three phases, BJP has the maximum seats in this phase.

While the NDA is in the fray on the basis of the development done by its government in the region and the state, the opposition parties, including the Grand Alliance, are talking about the winds of change. However, in this election, opposition parties are talking about making unemployment a main issue and giving employment to their government.

Many rebels of JDU are also in the fray in the second phase. Among them are former MLA Manjit Singh from Baikunthpur and Shailendra Pratap from Taraiya. Both these seats have gone to the BJP’s quota, due to which both the leaders of JDU have jumped into the independent ground.

The Kerala Health Minister KK Shailaja targeted the state Congress Chief over misogynistic comment on rape victims.

“Only persons with a dangerous mentality can say such things. Do rape victims who do not commit suicide have no self-respect? Did he mean that? Politicians should not repeatedly make such anti-women comments,’’ Shailaja said.

The Kerala Congress Chief Mullapally Ramachandran has earlier said if women with self-respect raped then she should die or avoid getting rape again.

“No one can trust a woman who publicly says she got raped, a woman with self-respect will kill herself if she is raped.”

In reply to Ramachandran’s comment, KK Shailaja said rape is the curliest crime in human society and it’s not right of Ramachandran to give out such unacceptable statements.

There are speculations that Ramachandra was taking a dig at solar scam accused Saritha Nair, but he never named her directly. Later on he tendered his apology on the entire incident.

Aurat ka kaam hai ghar sambhalna, jo maaf karna mein kabhi kabhi bol bhi jata hu (The job of a woman is to take care of the house). Problem kaha se shuru hui hai #MeToo ki jab aurato ne bhi kaam karna shuru kar diya (The problem of #MeToo began when women started working). Aaj aurat mard ke saath kandhe se kandha milane ki baat karti hai (Today, women talk about walking shoulder-to-shoulder with men).”

He further added, “Log women’s lib ki baat karenge, lekin main aapko bata doon, problem yahin se shuru hoti hai (People talk about women’s liberation, but let me tell you that where the problem begins). Sabse pehla jo member suffer karta hai woh ghar ka bachcha suffer karta hai, jisko maa nahi milti (The first person who suffers is the child, because he doesn’t have a mother taking care of him at home). Aaya ke saath baith kar Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu dekh raha hota hai (He sits and watches TV with his nanny all day). Jab se shuruat hui, tab se yeh bhi shuruat hui ke main bhi wohi karungi jo mard karta hai. Nahi, mard mard hai aurat aurat hai (It all began when women started saying that they want to do what men do. Aamir Khan’s Daughter Ira talks about being sexually abused

Aamir Khan’s daughter Ira Khan, who was diagnosed with clinical depression over four years ago, has never shied away from talking about her mental health on social media.

In her latest Instagram entry, the 23-year-old spoke her heart out and talked about the factors that could have possibly contributed to her depression.

Ira Khan on Monday revealed that she was sexually abused as a teenager by someone “she kind of knew.”

Ira opened up about the abuse in an Instagram video, mentioning how it took her over a year to realise that her abuser knew exactly “what they were doing,”.

The revelation comes a month after Ira Khan had revealed that she has been clinically depressed for more than four years.

In a 10-minute video posted on Instagram, the theatre director said it took her about a year to understand to make sense of it, following which she confided in her father and mother Reena Dutta.

In the video Ira Khan added, “When I was 14, I was sexually abused. That was slightly an odd situation in the sense that I didn’t know what that person was doing and if they knew what they were doing. It wasn’t happening every day.
