Three dead as woman beheaded in knife attack at French church

A woman was beheaded by an attacker with a knife, who also killed two other people, at a church in the French city of Nice on Thursday, 29 October, police said, as per a Reuters report.

Estrosi said the attacker had repeatedly shouted the phrase “Allahu Akbar”, even after he had been detained by police.

Within hours of the Nice attack, police killed a man who had threatened passersby with a handgun in Montfavet, near the southern French city of Avignon. He was also shouting “Allahu Akbar” (God is greatest), according to radio station Europe 1.

City Mayor Christian Estrosi stated on Twitter that the knife attack had happened in or near the city’s Notre Dame church and that the French authorities had detained the attacker. A police source informed Reuters that a woman was decapitated.

One of the people killed inside the church was believed to be the church warden, Estrosi said, adding that a woman had tried to escape from inside the church and had fled into a bar opposite the 19th century neo-Gothic building.

“The suspected knife attacker was shot by police while being detained, he is on his way to hospital, he is alive,” Estrosi told reporters.

A police source said a woman was decapitated. French politician Marine Le Pen also spoke of a decapitation having occurred in the attack.

Mr. Estrosi said the victims had been killed in a “horrible way”.

“The methods match, without doubt, those used against the brave teacher in Conflans Sainte Honorine, Samuel Paty,” he said, referring to a French teacher beheaded earlier this month in an attack in a suburb of Paris.

Mr.Estrosi said a woman had tried to escape from inside the church and had fled into a bar opposite the building.

The French anti-terrorist prosecutor’s department said it had been asked to investigate the attack.

With $14 billion, US Election 2020 to be the costliest election in the history

2020 US Presidential Election to Be Most Expensive in History, Expected to Cost $ 14 Billion

The 2020 Presidential election is turning out to be the most expensive election in history and twice as expensive as the previous presidential election cycle, with the total cost of the election expected to reach an unprecedented USD 14 billion, a research group said.

The Center for Responsive Politics said that an extraordinary influx of political donations in the final months driven by a Supreme Court battle and closely watched races for the White House and Senate pushed total spending in the election past the previously estimated 11 billion dollars figure.

The Center said that the 2020 election will cost USD 14 billion, shattering spending records. Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden will be the first candidate in history to raise USD 1 billion from donors. His campaign brought in a record-breaking USD 938 million through October 14, riding Democrats’ enthusiasm to defeat Trump.

President Donald Trump raised USD 596 million, which would be a strong fundraising effort if not for Biden’s immense haul. Even amid a pandemic, everyone is giving more in 2020, from ordinary individuals making small donations to billionaires cutting eight-figure checks to super PACs. Women are smashing donation records, and Americans are increasingly donating to candidates who aren’t running for office in their state, it said in a statement.

The 2020 election is more than twice as expensive as the runner up, the 2016 election. This year’s election will see more spending than the previous two presidential election cycles combined, said the Center for Responsive Politics, a nonpartisan, independent and nonprofit research group that tracks money in US politics and its effect on elections and public policy.

The group said that the massive numbers are headlined by unprecedented spending in the presidential contest, which is expected to see USD 6.6 billion in total spending alone, up from around USD 2.4 billion in the 2016 race.

Spending by deep-pocketed national groups is also driving the total cost of election higher. In the month of October alone, outside spending by super PACs and other big-money groups totalled nearly USD 1.2 billion. These groups are spending far more to boost Biden than help Trump, further aiding the Democrats cash-flush campaign. Driven by their supporters’ strong opposition to Trump, Democrats are continuing the fundraising prowess that helped them dominate the money race in the 2018 election cycle.

Anna wife of Armenian PM Nikol Pashinyan becomes part of a 13-member female squad

Anna Hakobyan, the wife of Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, has enlisted herself as part of a 13-member female squad, to defend the borders of Nagorno-Karabakh, which is the main area of conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

“A detachment of 13 females, including myself, will begin military training exercises,” Anna Hakobyan, 42, wrote on her Facebook page.

“In a few days we will depart to assist with the protection of our borders,” the post read. “Neither our homeland nor our dignity will be surrendered to the enemy.”

This will be her second military training course since the resurgence of tension between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Just last month, Hakobyan and a group of women from Karabakh underwent a seven-day combat training course at a military base, where they learnt how to use arms and ammunition, AFP reported.

Recently, pictures with Anna Hakobyan’s Kalashnikov automatic rifle went viral.

Anna is said to have been a peacemaker in the year 2018 and she appealed to the women of Azerbaijan for peace.

The Prime Minister of Armenia has described the situation on the battle front as very serious and appealed to the people of the country to take up arms.

Earlier this month, 20-year-old son of Armenia PM Ashot has also enrolled to become a volunteer in the fight.

More than 2 thousand people of Armenia have died in this war.

The most recent outburst of fighting between the two warring nations broke out in September.

Three ceasefire agreements, attempted separately by Russia and the United States, have failed to take affect as tensions continue to escalate in the region.

Azerbaijan and Armenia have been locked in a bitter conflict over Karabakh since Armenian separatists backed by Yerevan seized control of the mountainous province in a 1990s war that left 30,000 people dead.

Karabakh’s self-declared independence has not been recognised internationally, even by Armenia, and it remains a part of Azerbaijan under international law.

Earlier this month, Hakobyan, the chief editor of the Armenian Times newspaper, sent a letter to the First Ladies of the US, Canda, France, Brazil, Lebanon, Singapore, Lithuania, Argentina and Vietnam, urging them to “recognize the independence of Nagorno-Karabakh, the civilian population of which is being attacked by Azerbaijan”.

Dr Reddy to conduct final trials of Russia’s vaccine by March 2021

Drug maker company Dr Reddy, who is conducting trials of Russia’s covid-19 vaccine candidate in India, on Wednesday informed that it will roll out preliminary trials. As of now, the late-stage trials are expected to be completed as soon as March 21, it said.

Chief Executive Officer Erez Israeli, in a statement, said that mid-stage trials of the vaccine are scheduled to be conducted in next few weeks and will most likely be completed by end of December.

“(Phase 3 trial) can be over as fast as the end of March, but it could go into April or May,” Israeli said. He further added that the complete timeline will depend on the outcomes of Phase 2 trial results and approvals from the concerned authorities.

Dr. Reddy had signed a deal with Russian Direct Investment Fund(RDIF) in September to conduct clinical trials of its most touted vaccine, Sputnik V. In October, the drugmaker got approval from DCGI to conduct late-stage trials of the vaccine in the country.

As part of the partnership, RDIF shall supply 100 million doses of its indigenous vaccine to Dr Reddy’s after regulatory approval from India

The company will conduct the mid stage trial among 100 participants and final stage trials among 1,500 people.

Meanwhile, covid-19 situation in India has shown imporvement in the month of October, specially in last two weeks. However, with winter approaching and poor AQI, it is expected that outbreak will become vulnerable in the country.

Currently, as many as 8 million people have tested positive for the covid-19 infection in India. While the situation may have shown improvement, it is important to take extra care during this festive season.

Sputnik V developed by the Gamaleya National Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology became world’s first registered vaccine for covid-19 after approval from Ministry of Health of Russia.

The vaccine is currently in late-stage trials in Russia.

Iran, constructing underground centrifuge assembly plant

Inspectors from the UN’s atomic watchdog have asserted Iran has started constructing an underground centrifuge assembly plant after its previous one exploded in what Tehran called a sabotage attack over the summer, the agency’s head told The Associated Press.

In a series of explosions this July, many Iranian strategic sites were demolished, plus the nuclear enrichment facilities.

Iran had impeach the United States and Israel of secretly destroying the sites and had vowed action if sabotage was confirmed.

Days later, Iran confirmed that it would build a new, more secure nuclear site in the mountains.

Following the July explosion at the Natanz nuclear site, Tehran said it would build a new, more secure, structure in the mountains around the area.

Satellite images of Natanz analysed by experts have yet to show any obvious signs of construction at the site in Iran’s central Isfahan province.

The head of Iran’s nuclear program, Ali Akbar Salehi, said on state television last month that the destroyed plant would be replaced by one “in the heart of the mountains around Natanz.”

Army transfers officiating Commandant of OTA Chennai following complaints

The Army has transfered out the officiating Commandant of the Officers Training Academy (OTA), Chennai, after receiving complaints regarding his approach to training woman cadets.

The officer, a Major General, had been posted as Deputy Commandant of OTA, Chennai in May this year and was officiating as Commandant since July.

The complaints had been received by the Army about the officer while dealing with training of woman cadets in the academy and his emphasis on more “hands on” approach towards activities like their military training and PT, as per the source.

He is alleged to have encouraged physical contact with woman cadets and there were other issues of passing them in physical tests by allegedly lowering the required standards.

The officer is learnt to have justified his approach by saying that gender equality has to be ingrained in the minds of the cadets at the level of the training academy and that outdated methods of training should be abandoned.

He is also said to have told the instructional staff for better training methods to decrease the failure rate among woman cadets in physical activities.

However, it is learnt that there was a significant dissatisfaction among the instructors, both men and women, and some woman cadets at the academy concerning the Major General’s approach.

“The matter reached the level of the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Army Training Command (ARTRAC) Lt Gen Raj Shukla, who visited the OTA and personally took stock of the situation,” a senior Army officer revealed on condition of anonymity.

The Army finally decided to act in the matter and has posted the Major General as Chief of Staff of a Corps and another Major General has been posted as the officiating Commandant at OTA.

The Officers Training Academy, Chennai (OTA) is a training establishment of the Indian Army that trains officers for the Short Service Commission.

The 49 weeks course at the OTA prepares graduates for all branches of the Army, except for the Army Medical Corps.

The Academy provides an all-inclusive military training to ensure physical, mental and psychological development of cadets.

China describes LAC situation as “generally stable”

A day after the third Indo-US 2+2 ministerial dialogue, China described the LAC situation Wednesday as “generally stable” at the moment while asserting that the boundary issue is between India and China only.

China said its border standoff with India in eastern Ladakh is a bilateral issue, and asked the U.S. to “stop” its Indo-Pacific strategy, terming it as an attempt to impose American hegemony in the region.

Reacting to the US push for closer defence ties with India, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin told a media briefing here on Wednesday that “the border affairs between China and India are matters between the two countries.”

India and China have held 7 rounds of senior commanders’ conferences to resolve the navy standoff in Ladakh however with none breakthrough.

On the final 2 events although, they managed to concern a joint assertion on the talks in an indication that the situation was stabilising.

Indian and Chinese troops were engaged in a bitter standoff in several areas along the Line of Actual Control in mountainous eastern Ladakh.
