Covid-19 update: India reports 43,893 fresh cases in last 24-hour

Covid-19 cases in India are nearing 8 million mark as 43,893 more cases were reported in last 24-hour. With 509 fatalities on Tuesday, the death toll has reached 1,20,010.

Total active cases in the country are 6,10,803 while total cured cases are 72,59,509 with 58,439 new discharges in last 24 hours, the latest update from the Health Ministry said.

10,66,786 samples tested for Covid-19 in last 24 hours, Indian Council of Medical Research(ICMR) said on Twitter.

Kerala, for the fifth consecutive day, reported the most number of covid-19 cases in the country.

*Mizoram has imposed a week long lockdown in Aizwal to check the government’s covid-19 measures in the state capital.

Meanwhile, the global tally of coronavirus cases has reached 44,234,182. While 32,441,959 have recovered, 1,171,260 have succumbed to the virus so far. The US, the worst-hit country, has 9,037,951 cases. It is followed by India, which has 7,988,853 cases, Brazil (5,440,903) and Russia (1,547,774).

Uttarakhand HC directs CBI to probe against CM Rawat after journalist’s accusation

The Uttarakhand High Court has ordered a CBI probe against Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat after allegations made by a journalist in a video. The CM, then in-charge of Jharkhand, has been alleged of getting money transferred to the accounts of relatives during demonitisation in 2016 to illegally support the appointment of a person as head of the Gau Seva Ayog in Jharkhand.

The HC also quashed the FIR against the journalist, Umesh Kumar Sharma, for a social media post, in which he had claimed that CM Rawat’s associate Amritesh Chauhan from Jharkhand transferred money into the back account of Harinder Singh Rawat, who is the husband of CM’s wife’s sister, Savita Rawat.

“Uttarakhand High Court has quashed the FIR registered by the state government against two journalists for cheating, forgery, and directed Superintendent of Police, CBI Dehradun to register an FIR on the basis of the allegations levelled against the state’s CM,” ANI tweeted.

The FIR against Umesh was filed by Harinder, rejecting the allegations, saying his family is not related to CM Rawat. He also accused the journalist of fabricating documents relating to cash deposits in bank account.

Senior Supreme Court lawyer Kapil Sibal represented the journalist in the court and after hearing both the parties, Justice Maithani quashed the FIR against the journalist and ordered a thorough probe into the whole matter.

Hearing the petition, Justice Maithani stated, “…this court can, within the scope of jurisdiction under Article 226, order for investigation into allegations levelled by the petitioner in para 8 of the petition. This court is of the view that considering the nature of allegations levelled against Trivendra Singh Rawat, Chief Minister of the State, it would be appropriate to unfold the truth.”

It held, “It would be in the interest of the State that the doubts are cleared. Therefore, while allowing the petition, this court proposes for investigation also.”

The court also stated, “The allegations as levelled in the instant FIR do not make out any prima facie case against the petitioners.” 

Darshan Singh Rawat, media coordinator of the CM, said. “The government respects the High Court order. Facts will be cleared in the inquiry.”

A 21-year-old girl was brutally shot in the broad daylight outside her college premises. The entire incident happened on Monday, the girl has defended herself when the goon of two tried to harass her. As of now, the Haryana police have arrested the two accused in this case.

Speaking on the issue, Haryana Home Minister Anil Vij said that both accused has been arrested and the murder weapon has also been recovered by the Haryana Police. He added, “A Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by ACP Crime Anil Kumar has been set up and they will ensure quick probe as well as time-bound trial to ensure justice to the family.”

Reacting to the incident, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar commented, “The culprit in the Ballabhgarh incident has been arrested. Strict action will be taken against the culprit.”

The entire incident was recorded on CCTV footage and went viral and already created a ruckus among the people nation.

The family of the victim has linked the case to ‘Love Jihad’. According to them, they filed a kidnapping against one of the culprits in the case two years back. The commissioner of Haryana police has accepted that a case was filed against one of the culprits two years back. Later on, he also stated that the family back out from the case in fear of their security.

U.S-India 2+2 ministerial dialogue

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh held the third edition of the 2+2 talks with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Defence Secretary Mark Esper, in New Delhi.

India and the U.S. inked a landmark defence agreement that will allow sharing of high-end military technology, classified satellite data and critical information between the two countries. 

The signing of BECA allows India to use US geospatial intelligence and enhance accuracy of automated systems and weapons like missiles and armed drones. It gives access to topographical and aeronautical data and advanced products which will aid navigation and targeting. This could be key for Air Force-to-Air Force cooperation between India and the US. 

In the 2+2 dialogue, the two sides deliberated on a host of critical issues including ways to further expand the already close relationship between the militaries of the two countries as well as broader issues of mutual interest in the Indo-Pacific region.

US values India as a multi-lateral partner, whether it is through the quad, making Afghan peace negotiation successful or working together during India’s upcoming term on UN security council, we continue to support India’s permanent membership of UNSC, says US State Secretary Mike Pompeo.

At the inauguration, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said there was a need to confront China.

Union minister Pratap Sarangi promises to provide free covid vaccine

Union Minister Pratap Sarangi has said that Covid-19 vaccine will be made available free of cost to all citizens of the country. The BJP had promised a free corona vaccine in the manifesto of Bihar assembly elections. Subsequently, the opposition parties continued to attack the BJP. He was facing political allegations about the epidemic. Sarangi told reporters that ‘Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced that Covid-19 vaccine will be made available to all people free of cost. Vaccination of each person will cost around 500 rupees. Sarangi came to address a meeting in Balasore ahead of the by-election on November 3.

After addressing a gathering for the by-election to be held in Balasore on November 3, Sarangi told reporters that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced that Covid-19 vaccine will be made available to all people free of cost. Vaccination of each person will cost around 500 rupees.

Odisha minister asked for clarification from center

Earlier in the day, RP Swain, a minister in the Odisha government, attacked Union Ministers Dharmendra Pradhan and Pratap Sarangi, seeking answers regarding providing free of cost Covid-19 vaccine. Sarangi made this claim in response to Odisha’s Minister of Food Supply and Consumer Welfare RP Swain.

Swain had sought clarification from the two Odisha ministers at the Center, Dharmendra Pradhan and Pratap Sarangi, on the BJP’s stand on Odisha after the promise of free vaccine in Bihar?

Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Assam and Puducherry have already said that they will give vaccine free to their people. On the other hand, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has raised the demand for free vaccine for the whole country.

Infantry is an important part of the Indian armed forces. Infantry has an important contribution in the security of the country. The day of October 27 has been dedicated to its contributions and glorious history and every year this day is celebrated as Infantry Day or Infantry Day.

The number of foot soldiers of India has increased to about 12 lakh 40 thousand. October 27 is the day of infantry protecting the country by staying on the frontline. After all, why do we celebrate ‘Infantry Day’ on 27th of October itself? To know this, you have to walk in the year of India’s independence i.e. 1947. When the Ranbankurs of this infantry saved a large part of the country from going into the hands of Pakistan. It was the first such military action in independent India in which the army was used on a large scale. The country also got its first Paramvir Chakra winner from the Infantry Division in 1947.

In 1947, a few days after the independence of the country, the Pakistani army, along with the tribesmen, was marching towards Srinagar, destroying Baramulla, when the first battalion of the Sikh Regiment landed at the old airport in Srinagar on 27 October 1947. After this, the Sikh Regiment had changed the course of the war, showing indomitable courage and sacrifice.

On 22 October 1947, when Jammu and Kashmir was attacked by Pakistani tribesmen, Maharaja Hari Singh signed the Instrument of Accession document with the Government of India on 26 October. On Thursday, people celebrated the merger day at Jammu’s Tawi River Bridge. On this occasion, Vikramaditya Singh, grandson of Maharaja Hari Singh said that the merger of Jammu and Kashmir with India is final and there is a slap in the mouth of those who are raising questions on it.

In the Kashmir Valley where separatist leaders are celebrating anti-accession against the merger day. At the same time, apart from BJP in Jammu, different factions celebrated merger day in about a dozen places. Both the grandchildren of the then Maharaja Hari Singh also arrived at a program of merger day and cut 71 kg laddu.

Bar Association also celebrated the merger day in Jammu. The association asked the people to celebrate the merger day in all Jammu and Kashmir on October 26-27. The president of the Bar Association, Balbir Singh Salathia, told that on 26 October Maharaja Hari Singh had signed the merger letter and on 27 October the government accepted the merger letter. On Friday in the Kashmir Valley, the Hurriyat Conference and other separatist leaders have decided to celebrate Black Day and have also called for a Kashmir bandh.

Young international Indian chess player Leon Mendonca wins tournament

Young Indian International Master Leon Luke Mendonca earned his maiden Grandmaster norm after winning the title in Rigochess International Festival tournament in Hungary.
The 14-year old Mendonca won six games, drew two and lost one to emerge winner in the 10-player field which included three GMs and was played over the board. He secured seven points from nine rounds in the tournament.

Mendonca said he was happy to win the tournament and earn a GM norm after a few near misses.
“I am very happy to win the event and also gain my first GM norm after missing out on earlier occasions narrowly,” he told PTI.


He rated the performance in the last round match against Kozak, wherein he secured a draw after nearly five and half hours of play, as his best in the tournament.

The 14-year old Mendonca won six games, drew two and lost one to emerge winner in the 10-player field which included three GMs and was played over the board.

He secured seven points from nine rounds in the tournament.

In the ninth and final round, Mendonca settled for a draw with Hungarian GM Adam Kozak to finish half a point ahead of the field and secure the top prize.

The over-the-board tournament was conducted by adhering to COVID-19 safety protocols.

Devotee Dies In Firing Amid Violence In Durga Immersion Procession

An 18-year-old man was shot dead and some people were injured in firing after clashes during the immersion of Goddess Durga on Monday in Bihar’s Munger.

A video showing a police lathi-charge on a group carrying a Durga idol, widely circulated online, has sparked anger just a day before voting begins in the state for a new government.

The deceased has been identified as Anurag Poddar (25), a local resident. The four injured are local residents Saurabh, Chandan, Ashutosh and Chhotu.

Meanwhile, social media users have started uploading shocking visuals of last night’s situation in Munger. Hashtags like MungerDanga, ShameonMungerPolice, and BocyottMungerElection began to trend on Twitter.

Munger SP Lipi Singh said 26 policemen have been also injured in the incident. “We are collecting video footage of the spot to identify troublemakers. Adequate forces have been deployed to ensure no further untoward incident happens”.

She said over 30 people have been detained and were being questioned.

As per a Hindustan Times report, the cops first fired tear gas shells and then opened fire after the tear gas shells allegedly proved ineffective. The cops are said to have fired 15 rounds in the air.

Hitting out at the BJP-JDU government in Bihar over the violent clashes in Munger following a delay in Durga Puja idol immersions, the Congress on Tuesday asked will the administration now shoot and kill the Durga worshippers.

Sharing a video of the violence, Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala tweeted, “Will the BJP-JDU government thrash Durga worshippers like animals? Will the BJP-JDU government kill people for immersing Durga idol. Yes, these images are from Munger in Bihar. First, they lathi-charged the disciples and then police fired on them.”

This incident comes at a time when the state of Bihar is gearing up for assembly polls. The first phase of polling will take place tomorrow (28 October).

NASA’s SOFIA Discovers Water On Sunlit Surface Of Moon

Scientists have confirmed, for the first time, the presence of water on the sunlit surface of the Moon, a discovery which indicates that water molecules may be distributed across the lunar surface, and not limited to the cold, shadowed places as previously thought.

The results of SOFIA’s observations and the implications have been published in two papers in the journal Nature Astronomy.

Previous research has found indications of water by scanning the surface — but these were unable to distinguish between water (H2O) and hydroxyl, a molecule made up of one hydrogen atom and one oxygen atom.

But a new study provides further chemical proof that the Moon holds molecular water, even in sunlit areas.

More than 15,400 square miles (40,000 square kilometers) of lunar terrain have the capability to trap water in the form of ice, according to a team led by the University of Colorados Paul Hayne. “That’s 20% more area than previous estimates,” he said.

These ice-rich areas are near the moons north and south poles. Temperatures are so low in these so-called cold traps minus 261 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 163 degrees Celsius) that they could hold onto the water for millions or even billions of years.

Payal Ghosh joins Republican Party of India as head of women’s wings

Bollywood actor Payal Ghosh is making a lot of headlines nowadays. In the recent, she has joined Union Minister Ramdas Athwale-led Republican Party of India(A) in Mumbai. She has been designated as the vice president of party’s women’s wing.

Athawale said that Ghosh’s presence in party will strengthen women’s particiaption in political activities.

“I told her RPI(A) is Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar’s party. It helps all sections of society, be it Dalits, Adivasis, OBCs, villagers, slum dwellers. The RPI will get a good face if you join the party. After I discussed this with her, she was ready to join the party,” Athawale said.

For the event, Payal was dressed in a traditional blue suit salwar and was seen waiving a party flag.

Payal, meanwhile, has been in news after she accused filmmaker Anurag Kashyap of rape charges. Athawale also insisted that Kashyap will be arrested soon.

Ghosh expressed gratitude towards Athwale for believing in her and supporting her in case against Anurag Kashyap.

Ghosh is a model-turned-actor who made her Bollywood debut with Patel ki Punjabi Shaadi, a film which also starred Rishi Kapoor, Paresh Rawal, Vir Das and Prem Chopra.

Payal had filed a rape case against Anurag Kashyap in September 22 in Mumbai police. The FIR was registered under Sections 376 (I) (rape), 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 341 (wrongful restraint) and 342 (wrongful confinement) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
