Trump’s post suggesting Covid-19 is ‘just like flu’ gets a backfire from Twitter, Facebook

Facebook and Twitter took action on posts from U.S. President Donald Trump for contravening their rules against coronavirus misinformation by suggesting that Covid-19 was just like the flu.

Facebook took the post down but till then it was shared about 26,000 times, the company’s metric tool CrowdTangle report showed.

“We remove incorrect information about the severity of Covid-19,” a company spokesman told.

The world’s largest social media giant, Facebook, has reported very rare instances where it has removed content posted by politicians and diplomats.

Twitter disabled retweets on a similar tweet from Trump on Tuesday and added a warning label that said it broke its rules on “spreading misleading and potentially harmful information related to Covid-19” but that it might be in the public interest for it to remain accessible.
During the 2019-2020 influenza season, the flu was associated with 22,000 deaths in the United States, according to estimates from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

Since the first case of the coronavirus was recorded in the United States at the beginning of this year, more than 210,000 people in the country have died of the disease caused by the virus, the world’s highest death toll.

Trump told Americans “to get out there” and not be afraid of Covid-19 as he returned to the White House after a three-night stay in a military hospital outside Washington where he had his treatment for covid-19.

“Silicon Valley and the mainstream media have consistently used their platforms to fearmonger and censor President Trump to serve their own agenda, even now during this critical moment in the fight against coronavirus,” Trump campaign spokeswoman Courtney Parella said.

Twitter has made it clear that it would not let any misleading information surface on its platform from anyone including the president.

Facebook ,meanwhile, removed a post by the US president which included misleading information related to the coronavirus misinformation for the first time in August. The post featured a video wherein Trump made blatant claims that children were “almost immune” to Covid-19.

Public places can’t be occupied indefinitely: SC on Shaheen Bagh

The Supreme Court delivered its verdict on a batch of petitions against the anti-CAA protests that swept Delhi’s Shaheen Bagh earlier this year. Supreme Court has clearly stated that public places are not meant for protests and Delhi Police was completely failed in removing the crowd.

Verdict has been released by the bench of Justices SK Kaul, Aniruddha Bose and Krishna Murari they saud “an indefinite period of protests in a common area (that) creates inconvenience for others”.

“We have to make it clear that public places cannot be occupied indefinitely whether in Shaheen Bagh (in Delhi) or elsewhere. These sort of protests (like Shaheen Bagh) are not acceptable and (the) authorities should act… they must keep such spaces free from obstruction,” the top court said, adding the “administration cannot wait for orders from court to clear” the protest sites.

“We appreciate the right to peacefully protest and it can be (held) at designated places only,” the court stressed.

Hundreds of protesters, mainly women, and children camped out at Shaheen Bagh in Delhi for over three months earlier this year to protest against the CAA which is the Citizenship Amendment Act, NRC (National Register of Citizens), and NPR (National Population Register).

Later on, the nationwide coronavirus lockdown became the reason for the end of protest citing social distancing concerns.

Trump administration announces changes to H-1B visa program

The Trump administration announced significant changes on Tuesday to the H-1B visa program for high-skilled workers, substantially raising the wages that U.S. companies must pay foreign hires and narrowing eligibility criteria for applicants.

The changes, introduced by the Departments of Labor and Homeland Security on Tuesday, will likely make it tougher to qualify for one of the coveted visas.

The DHS rule will redefine the “speciality occupations” H-1B visa holders can qualify for, requiring petitioners to prove they have a college degree in the specific field they are seeking to work in.

The changes will also expand compliance enforcement and mandate that workers hired through a third-party firm be granted one-year work authorizations, instead of the current three-year period.

The H-1B is a visa in the United States under the Immigration and Nationality Act, section 101(a)(15)(H) that allows U.S. employers to temporarily employ foreign workers in speciality occupations. A speciality occupation requires the application of specialized knowledge and a bachelor’s degree or the equivalent of work experience. The duration of stay is three years, extendable to six years; after which the visa holder may need to reapply. Laws limit the number of H-1B visas that are issued each year: 188,100 new and initial H-1B visas were issued in 2019. Employers must generally withhold Social Security and Medicare taxes from the wages paid to employees in H-1B status.

The Department of Labor interim final rule will take effect Thursday, while the DHS companion rule is expected to be enforced in two months.

Collectively, the rules represent the broadest overhaul of the H-1B program in decades, according to experts and government officials.

The agencies have not published a copy of the new regulations, leaving hundreds of thousands of engineers, doctors and other skilled professionals mostly guessing about the scope of their impact, even as Trump administration officials described the measures in superlative terms.

FIR registered against Nawaz Sharif for favouring India’s policies

Former Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif, has been accused of favouring India and pertaining a criminal conspiracy by praising pro-Modi policy. A FIR has also been lodged against him for the “provocative speeches” he made during his London visits which intentionally defamed “Pakistan’s institutions”.

The FIR was lodged against the former PM on October 1 by a resident of Sahara Police Station’s jurisdiction.

“Nawaz Sharif’s speech was aimed to indirectly benefit his friend Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” stated the FIR. It also accused the former prime minister’s speeches of defaming Pakistan’s high courts and presenting the armed forces in bad light in front of the international community.

According to Pakistan’s local channel, Geo News, the case was filed under the provisions of the Pakistan Penal Code for criminal conspiracy against the the Pakistan Muslim League (N) chief.

Now, in the latest, it has been reported that Imran Khan government has now distanced itself from the charges filed aginst Sharif.

Science and technology minister Fawad Chaudhry tweeted that Prime Minister Khan was unaware of the sedition case. “The prime minister was not aware when I brought into his notice that an FIR has been registered [in Lahore] in which Nawaz Sharif and others have been nominated,” Fawad said, adding Khan “expressed strong displeasure. Let’s see what happens.”

Earlier this month, Pakistan had failed to execute a non-bailable arrest warrant against the former Prime Minister who was only granted permission to fly abroad for his health related concerns in November last year.

Meanwhile Nawaz had earlier slammed PTI, calling out the incumbent government for what he termed its “dual standards of accountability”. He also said that he is not someone who can be silenced and no one should try to do so. He also blamed Prime Minister Imran Khan for all the turmoil in the country.

After a wait of six months, Gulmarg Gondola reopens for tourists

Gulmarg Gondola, one of Asia’s largest and highest cable cars surrounded by pine forests and Himalayan mountain peaks in the ski resort of Gulmarg in Jammu and Kashmir, has opened for tourists this week after remaining shut for six months due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The information and public relations department issued a statement on its official Twitter handle on Monday, saying, “Gulmarg gondola reopened for the public. All COVID SOPs and preventive measures are in place. Enjoy the ride to Kongdori”.

The two-stage gondola lift ferries about 600 people per hour to and from Kongdoori Mountain, a shoulder of nearby Apharwat Peak (4,200 m (13,780 ft)). The ropeway project is a joint venture of the Jammu and Kashmir government and French firm Pomagalski.

The Gulmarg Gondola affords a magnificent view of Nanda Devi, LOC, and Pir Panjal range. Apart from cherishing the beauty of Himalayan ranges, tourists can enjoy other activities like horse riding and snow skiing.

Further, since there have been hardly any tourists in Kashmir after August 5, 2019, when the special status of J&K was abrogated, operating the multi-crore Gondola project to minimum capacity was not considered viable.

With the approaching winter, authorities are expecting ski lovers and adventure tourists to return to Gulmarg which has been the most sought after destination for tourists both in summer and winter months.

Delhi riots: Police files case against members of a WhatsApp group for promoting communal violence

The Delhi police in its supplementary chargesheet filed before court on Tuesday said that a WhatsApp group played crucial role in igniting Communal violence which led to north east Delhi Riots in February this year.

The group members lost their individuality and started working with mob mind. ‘Jai Sri Ram’ and ‘Har Har Mahadev’ which are the sacred slogans and are attached to the victorious yelling, deaden their mind and paralyzed their creative nature. They planned the manner of committing offence of rioting, murder and other offences…,” police alleged in the charge sheet.

The supplementary charge sheet further said that police has booked accused – Lokesh Kumar Solanki, Pankaj Sharma, Summit Chaudhary, Ankit Chaudhary, Prince, Jatin Sharma, Vivek Panchal, Rishabh Chaudhary, Himanshu Thakur– under section 153-A(promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language etc) and 505 (public mischief) of the Indian Penal Code.

Legendary guitar innovator and virtuoso Van Halen dies due to Cancer

Eddie Van Halen, the legendary guitar innovator and virtuoso who led Van Halen through five decades and three lead singers, establishing himself as one of the all-time great players in rock history, died Tuesday after a long battle with cancer. He was 65.

The rocker’s son, Wolfgang Van Halen, confirmed the death of his father Tuesday afternoon with a tweet, saying that Van Halen had “lost his long and arduous battle with cancer this morning.”

Wolfgang mourned his father online, writing … “He was the best father I could ever ask for. Every moment I’ve shared with him on and off stage was a gift. My heart is broken and I don’t think I’ll ever fully recover from this loss.” He added, “I love you so much, Pop.”

Eddie Van Halen was dogged by personal and health issues that would intermittently interfere with his work in music over the course of the next decade.

A chronic joint problem, exacerbated by his reckless onstage style, forced him to undergo hip replacement surgery in 1999. The onset of cancer — likely the result of heavy smoking — led to the surgical removal of part of his tongue in 2000.

Eddie Van Halen was an immigrant kid who emerged from Pasadena with an ear for hard-rock hooks and wild guitar flash in the Jimi Hendrix tradition.

Van Halen was the guitarist, main songwriter and founder of the influential Los Angeles hard-rock band Van Halen, which also included his brother Alex on the drums, bassist Mark Stone and charismatic frontman David Lee Roth.

His speed and innovations along the fretboard inspired a generation of imitators, as the band bearing his name rose to MTV stardom and multiplatinum sales over 10 consecutive albums.

Van Halen is among the top 20 best-selling artists of all time, Rolling Stone magazine put Eddie Van Halen at No. 8 in its list of the 100 greatest guitarists.

Van Halen released albums on a yearly timetable – “Van Halen II” (1979), “Women and Children First” (1980), “Fair Warning” (1981) and “Diver Down” (1982) – until the monumental “1984,” which hit No. 2 on the Billboard 200 album charts (only behind Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”). Rolling Stone ranked “1984” No. 81 on its list of the 100 Greatest Albums of the 1980s.

As news of Van Halen’s death broke, his friends and fellow musicians paid tribute to the one-of-a-kind talent.

Gene Simmons of KISS wrote on Twitter: “Eddie was not only a Guitar God but a genuinely beautiful soul.”

Geezer Butler of Black Sabbath called Van Halen “one of the nicest, down to Earthmen I have ever met and toured with.”

“A true gent and true genius,” he wrote on Twitter.

On Facebook, Ted Nugent said: “Thank you, Eddie, for vitalizing enriching and stimulating our lives with your brilliance gifts and vision. Jam on my friend. Jam on.”
