Delhi Riots: Umar Khalid sent to 14-day judicial custody by Delhi Court

The Delhi Court has sent former JNU student leader Umar Khalid into 14-day judicial custody in a case related to Delhi Riots which emerged in February this year over the amendment of citizenship law.

He was produced before Metorpolitan Magistrate Dev Saroha after his police custody expired on Sunday.

The court has asked prison authorities to ensure the adequate security for Khalid while emphasising no harm should be caused to him.

Khalid had filed appication through his counsel advocate Trideep Pais seeking adequate security in prison. In the plea, Khalid also demanded permission to communicate with his family, friends and relatives in accordance with the prison rules.

He also sought earphones to ensure privacy of his conversation with his counsel and facility to share screen in the Cisco Webex platform.

In the plea, Khalid requested the court to ask police to abide by Delhi prison rules, 2018 according to which he will be allowed to leave his cell early morning and will be locked up at dusk.

The application further sought approval of obtaining books from outside while in the judicial custody.

The court directed the Jail Superintendent to provide the facilities sought in the application by complying to the Jail Manual.

Khalid was arrested last month under the stringent anti-terror law — Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act– in a separate case which was allegedly a larger part of conspiracy relating to the communal violence in northeast Delhi.

A total number of 15 people, including suspended AAP counclillor Tahir Hussain, were arrested after a case of riots was reported at the Khajuri Police Station alleging them of playing pivotal role in the incident.

Communal riots on February 24 had erupted in northeast Delhi after citizenship law supporters and protestors indulged in violent clashes which left 53 people dead and around 200 injured.

Umar Khalid will be under the judicial custody till October 22.

IPL 2020: Virat praises Padikkal after he scored his 50 in four games for RCB

Virat Kohli led Royal Challengers Bangalore won their third game against Steven Smith led Rajasthan Royals. Rajasthan batted in the first innings and scored just 154 runs. All-rounder Mahipal Lomror was the leading run-scorer from Rajasthan Royals with his 47 runs, Yuzvendra Chahal took three wickets for RCB.

RCB batsmen backed themselves right from the start of their chase. RCB opener Devdutt Padikkal scored his third half-century the season. Captain Virat Kolhi has also scored 72 runs in the RCB chase after he failed in the first three games.

Kohli praised the 20-year-old Padikkal after he hammered a 45-ball 63 which led RCB to seal their third victory in their fourth IPL match. It was Padikkal’s third half-century in the four matches this season.

“I saw him play and told Simon that this guy has got some serious talent because he’s got reach, a great eye, a great balance,” said Kohli in the post-match presentation ceremony after RCB’s eight-wicket win over Rajasthan Royals on Saturday.

“It’s very difficult for the bowlers to continue bowling same lines and lengths against a lefty. The way he bats…very clean shots. You don’t feel like he is taking risks,” he said.

On Saturday, Padikkal shared a 99-run stand for the second wicket with Kohli to take the game away from Rajasthan Royals. “I just kept talking to him about building an innings,” said Kohli.

“If he can bat longer for the team, it’s going to benefit us. Today he carried from 40 to 65 odd which helped the team eventually. He’s a smart guy, he understands the game well and he responds to the feedback very well. The more he keeps learning, the better it is for RCB.”

IPL 2020: Building platform is important in every game, says DC captain Shreyas Iyer

“We really have a good platform and we have to be insatiable with our work ethics and keep getting better game after game from here on,” said Shreyas in the post-match presentation ceremony.

“It is really difficult to defend here. It has been such an amazing tournament, especially in Sharjah. It is always a thrill to play at this ground, the last time I played here was in the under-19s. Winning the match was the icing on the cake.”

“It was really necessary for me to take time at the start which I did in the earlier games as well. It was the right time for me to take on the bowlers and then rotate the strike as well after that. Luckily it worked out for me,” he said.

Kolkata Knight Riders’ chase never looked simple, at a point they were reduced to 122-6 but then Rahul Tripathi and Eoin Morgan did a brilliant job by putting up a partnership of 78 runs in just 30 balls.

The duo brought KKR back into the game in the high-scoring game but Delhi Capital bowlers didn’t leave the game so easily.

“We were confident we had two good overs left, but anything could happen, it is a funny game is T20s and especially here in Sharjah,” Iyer added.

KKR faced their third defeat of the season and now they slipped to number 6 in the points table.

Akshay Kumar opens up on drug consumption in Bollywood

Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar finally expressed his thoughts by posting a heartfelt message through a video on his social media handles. In the video, actor requested his fans to keep supporting their favorite celebrities while accepting that there are flaws existing in Hindi film industry like any other. He appealed to fans as well as media to don’t put a similar tag on every film personality, addressing the allegations of widespread drug abuse in film industry.

He started the video with an emotional message stating, Today, I talk to you with a heavy heart. In the last few weeks, I wanted to say some things, but there was so much negativity all around that I could not understand what to say, how much to say and whom to say it to.”
Further he added, “Even though we are called stars, it is you (the audience) who has made Bollywood what it is, with your love. We are not just an industry. Through the medium of films, we have promoted Indian values and culture. Films have tried to translate the emotions of the people of the country, be it the rage of the Angry Young Man, corruption or unemployment. So today, if you are angry, we accept that anger.”

The actor said he couldn’t deny that there are some in the industry who may be involved in illegal things, but most people will cooperate with the investigation.

“I’ll be a liar if I say that this problem does not exist in our industry. It exists, just like every industry. But every person in every profession is not involved in such problems. This is impossible,” he said.

“Drugs is a legal matter and I’m totally confident that our law enforcement authorities and courts will conduct a fair investigation into this issue. I know this for a fact that every person from the film industry will cooperate with them in this investigation. It is my request, don’t look at the whole industry with same lens. This is not right,” he said.

The actor requested the media to not indulge in insensitive and irresponsible coverage as, he said, even a single “negative issue” can damage an artiste’s hard-earned reputation.
“I want to request the media that they continue doing their jobs and raising their voices but with sensitivity. One piece of negative issue can damage a person’s reputation that they built over the years after a lot of hard work,” Mr Kumar said.
