Atal Tunnel is now open for drive

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated the new tunnel that not only promises a Manali to Leh drive all through the year, but also reduce the travel time between the two cities massively.

The 9.02 km long tunnel passes through Rohtang pass and it is the longest highway tunnel in the world, connecting Manali to Lahaul-Spiti.

It has many popular features for local residents and will further ‘Ease of Living’. He tweeted on Saturday that he will also enter public programs in Sissu in Lahaul Spiti and Solang Valley.

On June 3, 2000, former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee agreed to construct a strategic tunnel under the Rohtang Pass. On May 26, 2002, the cornerstone was laid.

In 2019, to honour the contribution made by him, the government agreed to name the tunnel after former PM Vajpayee.

As part of the inauguration ceremony, Modi walked in the tunnel and took a ride in it in an open-vehicle.

The Prime Minister also flagged off a bus carrying 15 passengers from the north portal of Atal tunnel in Sissu, Lahaul Valley for the south portal for the tunnel.

Google to introduce third-party verification tags to enhance marketing techniques

In order to cut down excess resources and seamless workflow, tech giant Google has announced to introduce automated third-party verification in Campaign Manager and custom pre-bid filtering in Display and Video 360 tools.

The process previously used was cumbersome and required multiple teams working to work in spreadsheets to add third-party verification to each placement on the media plan. This required a lot of resources and time, often leading to errors at reporting.

“Now you can seamlessly add third-party brand verification measurement to the ads you serve with Campaign Manager. You can still use Campaign Manager’s built-in Verification suite, but can now add third-party verification to your campaigns faster,” Sunil Gupta, Product Manager, Google Marketing Platform, said in a statement.

Automated third-party verification is faster and less error-prone because it uses system-to-system API calls between Google and the third-party vendor, said the company.

Now a user doesn’t need to log into a separate system to see what ads were blocked. Instead, one will have a centralised view alongside all of the user’s media and creative performance.
“We are launching with Integral Ad Science (IAS) as our first partner for this new capability and are actively working to bring other partners on board,” Gupta added.

Iron lady of Mumbai, Pushpa Bhave dies at the age of 81

Pushpa Bhave dies at the age of 81

Noted critic and scholar Pushpa Bhave passed away after a protracted illness early on Saturday.

She was 81. She is survived by her husband, the writer and broadcaster Anant Bhave, countless friends and students.

Veteran Pushpa Bhave cremated in Mumbai at Shivaji Park Cemetery without any religious rites.

She was also an academician and an intellectual, who fought for the rights of common citizens, he said.

Born and brought up in Dadar, Bhave did her MA in Marathi and Sanskrit from Elphinstone College, Mumbai.

She retired as head of the Marathi department in Ramnarain Ruia College in 1999.

Even after her retirement, the renowned public intellectual used to travel across Maharashtra delivering lectures. People fondly called her ‘Pushpa Tai.’

In one of the recent interviews with Mumbai Mirror, Bhave had said that her family never encouraged her to be a teacher. Yet, she was a part of several powerful social and political interventions, whether it was Baba Adhav Hamal Panchayat, the Devadasi Mukti Morcha, or the Dalit Movement.

Bhave had taken part in the Samyukta Maharashtra movement and the Goa liberation movement.

During the Emergency, she had offered her home as shelter to underground political workers like Mrinal Gore.

Following the mysterious death of a Dadar resident Ramesh Kini in the 1990s, Bhave had raised her voice against the builder-politician nexus and demanded a probe.

“She was a mentor for many, including me, and stood for secular and socialist values. She never compromised on her principles and followed in the tradition of other great socialists like S. M. Joshi, Mrinal Gore, etc.,” a close associate Jatin Desai told IANS on her demise.

Next few hours crucial for Donald Trump’s health: Report

United States President Donald Trump was admitted to a military hospital after testing positive for covid-19 infection on Friday. According to a Trump administration’s chief of staff, next two days will play a crucial role in his fight against the novel coronavirus.

“The President’s vitals over last 24 hours were very concerning and the next 48 hours will be critical in terms of his care. We are still not on a clear path to a full recovery,” the source told White House pool reporters post the briefing from his doctor.

The statement was in contrast to Trump’s physician, Navy Cmdr. Dr. Sean Cloney, who had earlier denied that the president received supplemental oxygen at the White House beore he was shifted to hospital for treatment.

The White House, meanwhile, scrambled to justify Trump’s covid timeline on Saturday, which got confusing after his doctor Sean Conley told reporters that the president was diagnosed “72 hours” ago.

If we consider Conley’s statement, it means Trump was diagnosed for the virus on Wednesday morning.

But the news of the President contracting the disease was announced on Thursday via tweet.

On Wednesday, while briefing about Trump’s health, Coney had said that he’s “doing very well”,” not on supplemental oxygen right now” and hasn’t shown any other symptoms of the disease for the last 24-hours.

The contrasting statements from people close to the matter have raised questions on White House credibiltiy at a time of crisis.

With President’s health in line and elections approaching, the need of the hour is to clarify the timeline.

Trump joined 7.3 million people in the United States who have tested positive for the covid-19 virus. The President is 74 and it has been proven that older adults are more vulnerable to the disease/

Amid all this, his campaign for the presidential election is at a standstill. The campaign events for Friday and next few days were cancelled, Trump’s Campaign Senior Adviser Corey Lewandowski told CBS News.

Trump has a debate scheduled for October 15 with his Democratic challengers Joe Biden.

Meanwhile, Biden, who was in a socially distanced debate with Trump on Tuesday, tested negative for the virus.

Remembering “Hero of Nathula” Baba Harbhajan Singh

"Soldier protecting the border's even after death"

Whenever it comes to the national interest, our soldiers are at the forefront. Our soldiers, who are always ready to protect us on the border, live for the country and die for the country. Baba Harbhajan Singh was one such soldier. Baba Harbhajan Singh is completely different from the rest of the soldiers.

Captain “Baba” Harbhajan Singh was an Indian Army Soldier and he was posted at Nathula during Indo-China war 1968.

Moreover, he is also referred to as “Hero of Nathula”.

He was born into a Sikh family, in Sardana village (now Bathebhiani in Tarn Taran district)

Harbhajan Singh joined as a soldier to Punjab Regiment.

He was martyred at an age of 22, in 1968 near Nathula in eastern Sikkim (30 August 1946 – 4 October 1968).

The actual cause of death was said that Singh drowned in a glacier while leading a column of mules carrying supplies to a remote post.

His body was recovered after 3 days search and was cremated with full military honour.

Harbhajan has been accorded with the status of a Saint. A saint who protects the borders even after death.

But did he really die?

Soon after his cremation, it was believed that he appeared in of his fellow friend’s dream. Harbhajan Singh asked him to erect a shrine in his memory. Following what his friend told, a shrine was dedicated to him.

There are also stories of soldiers discovering that he visited the camps at night, used the bedclothes and boots in his room and on that can be found in various social network posts about him.

The baba shrine has a ready bedroom just like jawans where necessities like army clothes, boot, bed, blanket etc are kept. Further, there is also an office for him. Some sources suggest that he continues to draw a major’s salary every month.

Every year on 11 September, a jeep departs with his personal belongings to the nearest railway station, New Jalpaiguri, from where it is then sent by train to the village of Kuka, in the Kapurthala district of the Indian state of Punjab.

While empty berths on any train of the Indian Railways are invariably allocated to any waitlisted passenger or on a first-come-first-served basis by the coach attendants, a special reservation for the Baba is made.

Every year a seat is left empty for the journey to his hometown and 3 soldiers chaperone the Baba to his home. A small sum of money is contributed by soldiers posted in Nathula to be sent to his mother each month.

The Army is on high alert when Baba is on leave.

Captain Harbhajan Singh retired from the army a few years back.

During flag meetings between the two nations at Nathu La, even the Chinese Army set a chair aside to honour him.

IPL 2020: Virat loves challenges, says Mohammad Shami

Mohammad Shami has been brilliant in this year’s IPL and proved himself by holding the purple cap. Shami believes his teammates have a great understanding between them. Kings XI Punjab has managed to win just a single game out of the four matches they played so far in the tournament.

“I have played with KL (Rahul) and I have worked with Anil (Kumble) sir for a long time. And I believe that it gets easier for a captain to manage a player if you have that understanding from a long time,” Shami said while speaking on Amstrad InsideSport Face 2 Face cricket series.

“And there are many players who have known each other in the squad. You just have to tell them once and they understand what they are trying it. This has helped us perform well as a unit and one person has to come out as a leader and Rahul is the perfect man for it. He is our keeper also which allows him to have a clear view of everyone,” he added.

On asked about the surge of COVID-19 pandemic Shami said: “For any athlete, this situation wasn’t in our schedule and it wasn’t even in our hand. As far as the Indian team goes, our schedule is pretty hectic throughout the year. We have back to back tours and we hardly get 10 days in between two tournaments.”

Shami said Virat had believed in him and that is the reason he has emerged as India’s supreme bolwer over the time.

“I think in international cricket, fast bowlers would definitely perform well when they have the backing from the captain and he is one such personality.”

“Virat loves to take on a challenge. He is clear with what he wants and he gives us the freedom to play to our strength and backs us with our decisions as well which has helped us perform better.”

On asked on the culture of team dressing room Shami said: “The biggest factor is the culture of motivation and fitness in the team. We have a unit of six-seven fast bowlers who have been playing since the last five years and no matter whom you choose they will give their 100 per cent.”

“If we keep on building this culture it is going to hugely benefit the junior levels. This is the basic reason that the reserve fast bowlers, U-19 ones everyone is showing great quality,” he added.

Shami further stated how he is going with his practice time. “When the lockdown started, I took 20-25 days off, but I pushed myself to utilise all the things I had which were needed for practice. Even though it gets a bit boring to practice alone but luckily I had my friend and my brother for the practice. The practice during the lockdown and a month of practice in UAE helped me keep the momentum.”

“The most difficult thing for a sportsperson it to maintain their weight and fitness levels which becomes very crucial to handle. I am very happy that I have been able to utilize what I got from cricket to keep myself in good shape.”

Priyam Garg stated that “it felt really bad” after he got Kane Williamson run-out during their game against Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

“It felt really bad when he (Williamson) got run-out. He was a set batsman. That he was run-out was a mistake, but everything went alright after that,” Garg told Abhishek Sharma in a video posted on iplt20.com.

“When I went back to the dugout, he said to me ‘Don’t worry mate, forget about it. You’ve batted really well’,” he added.

Priyam Garg scored 51 runs off 26 balls and was also player of the match. This was also his first half-century of his IPL career. Garg also praised his batting mate Abhishek Sharma who held on the crease with Priyam Garg.

“I had no pressure when Abhishek came in to bat, because we know each other and our strengths.”

“We both gelled well together and enjoyed each others’ batting. I felt really good about scoring my first IPL fifty,” he added.

SRH will be up against Mumbai Indians on Sunday. They will look to register yet another victory and surge in the points table.

Anti-China protests in Mongolia

The Mongolian community in Tokyo staged a demonstration against the Chinese government over its language policy. The policy aimed at replacing Mongolian with Mandarin at educational institutions in Inner Mongolia, an autonomous region in China.

The protest saw the participation of around 1,000 activists and was held on September 12.
Protesters were shouted anti-China slogans and held banners denouncing Beijing’s language policy.

The representatives also criticised the growing human rights violations within China especially in Tibet and in Hong Kong.

Interestingly, US secretary of state Mike Pompeo will be visiting the country as part of his Asia visit next week.

Chinese Foreign minister Wang Yi’s visit to Mongolia last month was also overshadowed by protests.

“During the Wang Yi’s visit Mongolian leadership should have spoken up and stated that China must release the arrested Inner Mongolians,” protester Elbegdorj told AFP.

“Obtaining an education in its native language is universally recognised human rights,” protest organiser Zolzaya Nyamdorj said.

“China is violating those rights” he added.

Payal Ghosh demands drug test on Anurag Kashyap

Actor Payal Ghosh has claimed that Anurag Kashyap, who visited Versova Police Station on Friday for his eight-hour grilling session, has lied before Mumbai Police.

Payal has levelled sexual harassment charges against Anurag Kashyap. As a part of investigation, she has demanded police to perform lie detector, polygraph test and narco analysis on the filmmaker.

“Mr Kashyap has lied before police in his statement… my Lawyer is moving an application to conduct Narco Analysis, Lie Detector and Polygraph Test of Mr Kashyap to find out the truth. Today application will be filed to the police station, for the interest of Justice,” Payal tweeted from her verified account on Friday, tagging Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and using the hashtag #BetiBachao with her post.

On Friday evening, Payal’s lawyer Nitin Satpute tweeted from his unverified account: “Today I hv filed an application to the Police station on behalf of Payal Ghosh to conduct Narco Analysis, Lie Detector and Polygraph Test of Mr Kashyap to find out the truth, for the interest of Justices.”

Payal, in a tweet, called the MeToo movement across the country fake. She also questinoed movement’s authenticity.

“All the accused got a clean chit in the #Metooindia movement. So it deems the accuser to be false. Why are they not punished for harassment then? Where is the truth. Up in the air. Why are those women not behind the bars for false accusations, as the accuser got a clean sheet?” Payal wrote on her verified Twitter account.

“The women posting in support of the accused know nothing about the situation and can have an opinion that the accused can’t do this ever. It’s like the rapist’s wife saying that the husband is innocent and can never do this. Tell me otherwise,” Payal wrote in separate tweets, tagging her opinion with #fake and #Metooindia.

Payal’s claim over authenticity came as Anurag Kashyap continues to garner support against the allegations levelled on him.
