China Now Readies New Expansion Plan on Bhutan

Ahead of the 25th round of boundary talks between China and Bhutan, the People’s Liberation Army is set to open a front against the Kingdom with a build-up in its western and central parts to settle the border on terms favourable to Beijing, people in the know told the Hindustan Times.

”In the negotiations, China may use transgressions and encroachments in central Bhutan by the PLA for a trade-off on already encroached areas and the Kingdom’s western part,” the people said.

However, India and China recently reached a five-point consensus to resolve the four-month-long military standoff in eastern Ladakh, agreeing to “quickly disengage” troops, to avoid any action.

Meanwhile, Bhutan lies next to the Siliguri corridor, territorial compromise by Thimpu would have an adverse effect on India’s defences in the area, the report states.

UP to introduce special security force with powers to search/arrest without warrant

In addition to its zero tolerance policy towards crime, the Uttar Pradesh government on Sunday announced that a special force team will be established. This special force will have similar to power to the CISF (Central Industrial Security Force), this step was taken by the orders of Allahabad High Court, which expressed concerns and discontent over the security at civil courts last December.

The Uttar Pradesh Special Security Force (UPSSF) will be tasked to protect the courts, airports, administrative buildings, metros, banks and other state government offices. The Special Security Force will be having power to search and arrest without warrant.
Briefing reporters here, Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Awanish Awasthi said, “The state government has given orders for the constitution of a special security force. A roadmap in this regard has been sought from the UP DGP.”

“This is a dream project of the UP chief minister. The basis of this force is an order of the High Court, which had ordered that there should be a specialised force for civil courts. In all, there will be 9,919 personnel in the force,” he added.

Awasthi said five battalions will be constituted in the first phase and it will be headed by an ADG-ranked officer.

“Expenses incurred in the first phase will be around Rs 1,747 crore,” Awasthi said.
This move by government is criticized and questioned by many pointing out the draconian powers of search and arrest could be misused.

There has been no formal response from the government on the criticism, however, sources, have underlined the powers being given to the UPSSF are similar to the CISF , the central force that guards similar installations.

Section 12 of the CISF ACT reads: “Whenever any member of the Force not below the prescribed rank has reason to believe that any such offence as is referred to in section 11 has been or is being committed and that a search warrant cannot be obtained without affording the offender an opportunity of escaping or of concealing evidence of the offence, he may detain the offender and search his person and belongings forthwith and, if he thinks proper, arrest any person whom he has reason to believe to have committed the offence.”

TikTok seals the deal with Oracle, Microsoft rejected

The video-sharing app TikTok, owned by Chinese firm ByteDance, has locked the deal with Oracle for its operation in the United States, rejecting the bid from tech-giant Microsoft.

According to a source familiar with the matter, ByteDance has chosen Oracle its most favourable partner to buy the app in US.

Microsoft, who was considered as one of the strongest contendors in the bid to buy the app, on Sunday announced that TikTok has rejected its offer a week before President Trump’s executive order’s deadline ends.

TikTok, meanwhile, refrained from commenting on the matter.

ByteDance has been in search of a suitable buyer for selling TikTok since President Donald Trump threatened to ban the app in the country citing privacy issues. He effectively set a deadline to pressurise the firm to accelerate the process of selling.

According to a report published in the Washington Post, Oracle has been chosen by ByteDance as a “technology partner” to allay US concerns. Reuters, on the other hand, said that the deal would be more than a mere sale as the company is looking forward to the reconstruction of the app as Oracle will handle US user data.

ByteDance need approval for the deal from both Washington and Beijing. It would be interesting to see if Trump, who had asked ByteDance to sell TikTok to a US firm, will approve the proposal or not.

It has not been revealed that how much of TikTok’s US operations ByteDance and its investors would continue to own.

Trump has claimed TikTok could be used by China to track the locations of federal employees, build dossiers on people for blackmail, and conduct corporate espionage.

Former Jawaharlal Nehru University student Umar Khalid was today arrested by the Delhi Police under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

Earlier on March 6, an FIR was registered against Umar Khalid. In the FIR, investigating officers had claimed Umar and his associates “conspired” to trigger communal riots in Delhi.

Umar Khalid was earlier charged under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act in another case related to the riots. His mobile phone has been seized by the police, news agency PTI reported.

Last week he was questioned by Delhi Police for over three hours and later released.

The officer claimed that Umar was one of the key conspirators of the riots that took place in the city’s northeast in February.. His name was also emerged in riots investigation done by crime branch.

Khalid Saifi, a co-founder of ‘United Against Hate’ of which Umar is also a member, was arrested in June. Later on Friday a court in Delhi granted bail.

The Delhi Police had indicated that Saifi played a “crucial role” in arranging a meeting between Umar and suspended AAP Councillor Tahir Hussain who is also behind bars in connection with the riots.

Meanwhile, the group ‘United Against Hate’ said in a statement that the Delhi Police must ‘ensure Umar Khald’s safety by all means possible’.

Since December, Delhi was brimming with tensions after the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) was passed.

Protests against CAA started in various parts of the national capital. An agitation also started near Jafrabad metro station in northeast Delhi.

Communal clashes had broken out in northeast Delhi on February 24 after violence between supporters of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and those against the legislation spiralled out of control, leaving at least 53 people dead and around 200 injured.

Government to formulate statement on Ladakh stand-off in Parliament

The government is likely to formulate a statement in parliament on the India-China stand-off, sources have said.

Earlier on Sunday, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Prahlad Joshi told, the government is ready to discuss the matter and told them that a meeting of leaders from both the houses – Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha – will be held on Monday to discuss the issue given its sensitive nature.

The relationship between the two nuclear-armed neighbours has deteriorated since a clash in the Ladakh region on June 15 in which 20 Indian troops were killed.

Notably, the Monsoon session of Parliament is scheduled to begin from September 14 and conclude on October 1.

The government has been under consistent attack from Congress leaders, spearheaded by Rahul Gandhi, over the stand-off with China at the Line of Actual Control or LAC, the de facto border between the two nations.

However, top sources in the government said a discussion on the India-China face-off is unlikely to be allowed soon.

A senior Union minister aware of the developments said, “Our government has never run away from any debate or discussion. But these are sensitive matters concerning the nation. Strategic issues concerning national security and integrity are not discussed openly.”

Sreesanth ready to march the field for Kerala, as his seven-year ban gets over

The seven-year ban on Indian fast bowler S Sreesanth for alleged spot-fixing came to an end on Sunday. The fast bowler was initially banned for life, but he fought a legal battle against this decision taken by the BCCI.

Thirty-seven-year-old Sreesanth has already made it clear that he intends to resume at least his domestic career and his home state Kerala. KSCA asked the fast bowler to prove his fitness for consideration of his name in the state team.

Sreesanth tweeted on Friday, a few days before the ban was over, “I am now completely free of any allegations and will now represent the game I love the most. I will try my best on every ball, even if it is practice.”

India’s domestic session starts in August, but due to the pandemic, the entire program was disturbed. Sreesanth was banned for life for alleged spot-fixing in the 2013 season of the IPL, but last year the Board for Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) ombudsman had reduced his ban to seven years.

IPL 2020: Can MS Dhoni-led CSK win their fourth title?

Since the inception of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2008, Chennai Super Kings have been the most consistent team of the tournament. The team has won the trophy three times since the start of IPL, they also reached the finals eight times. The team of Chennai Super Kings under the captaincy of former India World Champion Mahendra Singh Dhoni has always been the havoc team for the rivals.

In this 13th season of the league, all eyes will be on Dhoni, who retired from the international cricket last month. Dhoni will land on the cricket field after more than a year. He played his last match in the semi-final match played against New Zealand in the 2019 World Cup, but now fans are eagerly waiting to see Dhoni’s helicopter shot.

This year Dhoni’s CSK will be up against the Mumbai Indians in the opening match of the season, while there are still some questions for the franchise which need to be answer before the start of the tournament.

Chennai Super Kings

CSK has always relied on a solid start. After this, Suresh Raina continued to perform well at number 3, but this time Raina has returned home and he will not play this season. In such a situation, someone else will have the responsibility to fill Raina’s deficiency.

Similarly, veteran spinner Harbhajan Singh is also out of this season, which will affect the balance of the team slightly. He is not only a wicket-taking bowler but can hit some good shots with the bat. The second thing that will worry CSK is the lack of match practice of their senior batsmen like Dhoni, Shane Watson, and Ambati Rayudu.

The Indian Army has also increased the deployment of tanks, cannons and jawans in this area. Now the soldiers of both countries are face to face.

The Chinese PLA made provocative military deployments at Spanggur Gap, which is between Gurung Hill and Magar Hill, from August 30 after Indian soldiers seized tactical heights on the ridge line on the southern bank of Pangong Tso near Chushul at the Line of Actual Control.

“Seeing the Chinese PLA troop and guns mobilisation, the Indian Army too made mirror deployments at Spanggur Gap. Both the countries’ troops and guns are within shooting range,” said a government official.

Further, sources said, China has deployed its militia squads to “consolidate the border” and “stabilise Tibet region”. They have been tasked to try and dislodge the Indian Army soldiers from the tactical heights.

“Militia is basically a a reserve force of the Chinese’s People Liberation Army. They are deployed during war time situations and to help the PLA in its military operations,” said a senior government officer.
