The SC refuses pre-telecast ban on Sudarshan TV show while the Delhi HC stays broadcast of TV’s ‘UPSC Jihad’ program

A controversy erupted on Thursday over a promotional clip released by a TV channel about an ‘expose’ done by them on what they described as an “increasing number of Muslims” getting into civil services.

On Friday, the Delhi High Court stayed the broadcast of the controversial program named ‘UPSC Jihad’ of Sudarshan TV on Muslim candidates in the civil services, which was scheduled to be telecast at 8 pm on Friday.

The High Court order came on a petition filed by the students of Jamia Millia Islamia University. Sudarshan News head Suresh Chavhanke had referred to the students of the university as “Jamia ke jihadi” in the video clip. The order was passed by a single-judge bench of Justice Navin Chawla.

Shadan Farasat, the lawyer representing Jamia students, told the court that Chavhanke had openly indulged in hate speech and defamed the students. “Chavhanke openly incited his target non-Muslim audience by fear-mongering that ‘jihadis’ or terrorists from Jamia Millia Islamia would soon hold positions of authority and power,” Farasat said.

While the top court refused to impose pre-broadcast ban on Sudarshan TV from airing ‘Bindas Bol’ programme.

The apex court has fixed next date of hearing on September 15, the high court will hear the matter on September 7.

A Supreme Court bench comprising Justices D Y Chandrachud and K M Joseph said it has to be circumspect in imposing a prior restraint on publication or the airing of views.

“At this stage, we have desisted from imposing a prebroadcast interlocutory injunction on the basis of an unverified transcript of a forty- nine second clip, said.

In the apex court, notice was issued to the Centre, Press Council of India, News Broadcasters Association and Sudarshan News.

The Indian Police Foundation and Indian Police Service Association condemned the statements by the anchor.

“The hate story carried on a Noida TV channel against minority candidates joining IAS /IPS is dangerous bigotry. We refrain from retweeting it because it is pure venom.  We hope News Broadcasting Standards Authority, UP Police and concerned government authorities take strict action,” the IPF tweeted.

In a post that is somehow still available on Twitter – a damning indictment of the social media platform’s hate speech moderation in India – Chavhanke said he is going to be talking about ‘naukarshahi jihad’, the ‘infiltration’ of India’s bureaucratic service by Muslims.

US House Democrats hold Mike Pompeo in contempt proceedings

On Friday, a contempt proceeding against Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was announced by U.S House Foreign Affairs Committee, quoting his political misuse of department resources.

Eliot Engle, the Democratic Chairman of the House of Representatives committee, has specified Pompeo speech recorded in Jerusalem for this week’s Republican National Convention. Engel stated “ Pompeo demonstrated alarming disregard for the laws and rules governing his own conduct and for the tools the Constitution provides to prevent government corruption.”

“He seems to think the office he holds, the department he runs, the personnel he oversees, and the taxpayer dollars that pay for all of it are there for his personal and political benefit,” Engel said in a statement.

Last month a subpoena to Pompeo was issued by the committee demanding documents he provided to Republicans investigating Democratic presidential candidate Joe Bidan. A Republican-led US Senate committee has been gathering information related to Hunter Biden, son of the former US vice president, Republican President Donald Trump’s opponent in the November election.

Hunter Biden is a former board member of the Ukrainian energy company Burisma. The company was thrust into the global spotlight last year in the impeachment inquiry into whether Trump improperly pressured the government in Kiev into opening a case involving his election rival. “I gave Mr. Pompeo ample opportunity to fulfill my request for documents, which I first made more than three months ago. These documents were already produced to the Senate, and his refusal to provide them to the Foreign Affairs Committee required that I issue a subpoena on July 31,” Engel said in a statement

Israel’s EL AL lists first flight to UAE after signing historic peace agreement

In a major development, Israel has announced its first flight to UAE, which would be taking off on Monday. The El Al flight from Israel will land in Abu Dhabi, the officials said on Friday. The development comes after the two countries agreed to a peace pact deal brokered by US administration to normalize relations.

The confirmation has put a rest to Israel plans to annex land sought by the Palestinians. It has also indicated the beginning of a long-standing relationship between the two countries amid their mutual tension with Iran.

The deal will not only benefit their economies but will also strengthen their ties with the US administration who also share sour relationships with Iran after withdrawal from the nuclear deal with Iran in 2018.

-The new flight was listed by the Israel Airports Authority on Friday. It said the flight would be numbered LY971, a nod to the UAE’s international calling code number. The returning flight to Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion International Airport will be numbered LY972, which is international calling code for Israel.

However, the flight was not immediately available for booking on Israel’s website.

Earlier, US officials have earlier said that the much-anticipated first flight will carry Americans officials led by President Donald Trump’s senior advisor and son-in-law Jared Kushner.

Emirati officials and the US Embassy in Abu Dhabi has not commented on the matter yet.

Meanwhile, Iran continues to oppsose the deal establishing full diplomati relations between UAE and Israel, saying it will lead to the adaptation of the western culture in the countires. It also called the move a “stab in the back to all Muslims.”

“The UAE government and other accompanying governments must accept responsibility for all the consequences of this action,” Iran said.
