Rhea Chakraborty, who has been accused by Sushant Singh Rajput’s father of abeting actor’s suicide, made a several revelations on Thursday. It is for the first time the actress has opened about her relationship with the deceased actor in public domain.

Rhea called the whole investigation a “witch-hunt” wherein everyone is trying to prove they loved Sushant.

In an interview to NDTV, Rhea said that Sushant’s family’s claim about not informing them regarding his deteriorating health is baseless. She mentioned that she had told the actor’s family about his depression and yet they chose to leave him. “I was not isolating Sushant from his family. He went to Chandigarh to meet his sister’s family. They met him in Bandra and sat smiling in a cafe. Why did his brother-in-law message a cop asking him “whack” me? Why did you let him come back from Chandigarh if you think I was isolating him,” she said.

She also questioned why did Sushant’s sister Meetu leave if he was unwell who had come to meet him the week he died.

Rhea also refuted the accusations of money laundering, but accepted that she and Sushant had a company where they were equal partners.

“The allegations are completely baseless. I never took a single rupee from him. I am being probed by the Enforcement Directorate. Sushant’s bank statements are in public domain. We had a company where we were equal partners. The ED wants to know financial details. I am willing to cooperate with everyone. All I ask is for a fair trial by the media, people. You are breaking down a simple, innocent middle-class family,” she said.

She also said that Sushant shared a close-friendship with her brother Showik who would often accompany both of them in their trips.

“Showik and Sushant shared a lot of common interest. He was like a elder brother to Showik. If Sushant was interested about something, he would tell my brother to read about them,” she added.

On being asked about the infamous ‘Sorry Babu’ incident, Rhea told India Today, ” I got to see the body for 3 seconds. I said ‘I am sorry’, because, I am… that he has lost his life.I touched his feet as a mark of respect, which any Indian could understand why anyone touches someone’s feet.”

Rhea also said that she didn’t go to Sushant’s house because she did not share good relations with his family. She further said, “I was ready to go to the funeral, but my industry friends told me not to go as his family doesn’t want me there. I would only be insulted and be asked to leave from there. Then one of my friends said that it is important for me to see his body for the last time because if I don’t, I will not get closure and it will be hard to accept the fact that he is no more.”

On being asked if she used to take drugs, Rhea said, “I deny all allegations. I don’t want to hurt the investigations. I do know Gaurav Aarya (hotelier). I have never taken MDMA.” She also said that she’s ready to take a blood test to prove her stance.

She mentioned “Yes, Sushant used to smoke marijuana, he used to take it even before he met me. He started this during Kedarnath. I used to control him in this department only. He was a man of his own choices and nobody could stop him.”

Rhea also claimed that Sushant’s mother also suffered from depression. “Sushant found it hard to live without his mother, he was very close to her. She also suffered from depression and that is why she passed away,” she said.

Sushant was found dead at his Bandra apartment on June 14. The case is currently being probed by a team of CBI.

GST Council meet: Market borrowing or RBI, Centre puts two options before states on compensation

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman chaired the 41st Goods and Service Tax(GST) meet on Wednesday to discuss on compensating states for revenue shortfall amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The government said the coronavirus pandemic has affected goods and services tax(GST) collection with a shortfall of Rs 2.35 lakh crore for fiscal 2021.

The Finance Minister, after a discussion with decision making body responsible for fixing GST policies, said the covid-19 pandemic was unprecedented. It was “an act of God” that affected the GST collections. she said. “…This year we are facing an extraordinary situation. We are facing an act of God where we may even see a contraction,” she said.

The centre has released over ₹ 1.65 lakh crore as GST compensation to states for fiscal 2020, including ₹ 13,806 crore for March, while cess collected for GST compensation was only ₹ 95,444 crore, the FM said.

Under the Central Goods and Services Tax Act, states have been guaranteed payment for any loss of revenue in the first five years since the GST was implemented on July 1, 2017. The shortfall is calculated assuming an annuals growth of 14 percent in GST. However, this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, the centre is unable to pay GST dues to states.

The states have, meanwhile, said the Centre is “morally bound” to compensate and the “refusal is nothing short of a betrayal”.

The government has now placed two options to pay off before the states including help from the Reserve Bank of India.

Revenue Secretary Ajay Bhushan Pandey said said a special window can be provided to the states, in consultation with the RBI, at a reasonable interest rate for borrowing of Rs 97,000 crore. The amount can be repaid after five years (of GST implementation) ending 2022 from cess collection.

The second option before the states is to borrow the entire Rs 2.35 lakh crore shortfall under the special window.

“Two options were placed before the states. We can facilitate through RBI. States have asked to put us both the options in a detailed form today and give them seven working days, after that they will come back. It means we can have a small meeting on GST. We will take a call. Two bi-monthly payments are delayed this year. We want only for this year. The GST Council can look into the payments again in April next year,” Ms Sitharaman said.

Meanwhile, Congress has accused Centre of “sovereign default”, stating it has forced decision on the states. They also mentioned that asking states to borrow the required money defeated the foundation on GST was built which had promised to come to rescue of the states in the situation of crisis.

Punjab Finance Minister Badal Singh has said the solution that was arrived at is not satisfying. Government of India owes ₹ 4,400 crore to Punjab for which the total salary bill is ₹ 1,800 crore and the state has demanded to pay off the amount as the coronavirus pandemic has thrashed the economic situation in the state.

NEET, JEE 2020: More than 100 academicians write to PM Modi lending support to conduct of exams as scheduled

While the debate over conduct of JEE-NEET continues to intensify across nation, the central government has rightfully decided not to terminate the examinations.

Amid the heated debate, what can definitely be called a relaxation for the central government, a long list of academicians including professors from Delhi University, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Central University of Kerala, California University among several other top colleges have come in the support of the conduct of tests.

In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a group of concerned academicians have hailed the decision, stating it would help students to grow further and they would not lose a year.

“We the members of academic fraternity fully support the government decision to conduct JEE and NEET exams,” they wrote.

Calling the postponement as political agenda, they said that the students’ future cannot be compromised at any cost., they wrote: “The dreams and future of our youth and students cannot be compromised at any cost. However, some are trying to play with the future of our students simply to propel their own political agenda and oppose the government.

“We hope and strongly believe that under your able leadership, the central government will successfully conduct the JEE and NEET exams taking full precautions to ensure that the future of students is taken care of and the academic calendar for 2020-21 is rolled out.”

They say that they “wholeheartedly welcome” the government’s move, while citing the Supreme Court dismissing a petition for postponement of these exams saying that any further delay in conducting the tests would result in waste of precious year for students.

“Youth and students are the future of the nation but in the wake of Covid-19 pandemic, clouds of uncertainty have gathered over their careers too,” they further mentioned.

The letter would definitely be a relief for the central government as it comes at a time when the opposition leaders were planning to move to Supreme Court to seek postponement of the exam.

The list of academicians who have written to PM Modi include Prof. C.B. Sharma of IGNOU, Prof. Prakash Singh of the Delhi University, Prof. Sanjeev Sharma, the VC of MGCUB in Bihar’s Motihari, Prof. Jayaprasad, the Pro-VC of Central University of Kerala, and Prof. Ainul Hasan of the JNU among others.

Chinese envoy terms Galwan clash a ‘brief moment’ in history, Weidong said, countries “should live in peace and avoid conflicts”

China’s ambassador to India Sun Weidong called the Galwan Valley clash that left 20 Indian soldiers dead an “unfortunate incident” that neither China nor India “would like to see”.

Sun also asserted that the violent clash that has soured relations between the two neighbours, was “a brief moment from the perspective of history”.

In a sloping way, Sun expressed the two main issues for China — the ongoing economic ‘decoupling’ that India is undertaking, and possible action against Confucius Institutes in the country.

China’s mantra of boxing away border disagreements is not working with India any more — India has emphasized that the resolution of the border dispute and peace and tranquillity on the LAC are essential pre-requisites for normal relations between the two countries.

Weidong said India and China “should live in peace and avoid conflicts.”

“No country can be isolated from the rest of the world and seek development on its own. We should not only adhere to self-reliance but also stick to opening up to the outside world in line with the trend of globalization. Only in this way can we achieve better development,” he said.

He added that both sides should “have the wisdom and ability to properly handle bilateral relations”.

Taking a mollifying tone, he also reiterated that China’s stand regarding India remains unchanged — that Beijing sees New Delhi as a partner and not a rival.

Donald Trump to send federal officers to quell Wisconsin protests

The US president Donald Trump on Wednesday said that he will be sending federal assistance to Kenosha, Wisconsin, as the city continues to tussle violent protests over the death of a black man, Jacob Blake.

Trump confirmed that White House officials and Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers have had a word and the gov. has given a nod to federal assistance to combat the grappling demonstrations which have left many parts of the city thrashed.

“We will NOT stand for looting, arson, violence, and lawlessness on American streets,” Trump tweeted.

“TODAY, I will be sending federal law enforcement and the National Guard to Kenosha, WI to restore LAW and ORDER!” he added.

Trump’s statement came after hundreds of protesters hit street and threw fireworks, water bottle at police. The police, in response, fired rubber bullet and tear gas, creating unrest in the city.

Blake was shot seven times in the back by the police on Sunday while he tried to get into his car. The incident was captured in the video. It is still unclear what led to the shooting.

Blake’s family says he is currently paralyzed from the waist down and is “fighting for his life” but it would take a miracle for him to be able to walk again.

Meanwhile, protests have continued for three days straight in response to the shooting, and have fraught into violence. Two people were killed and a third was injured in a shooting late Tuesday during the protests.

Police on Wednesday arrested a 19-year-old in connection with the two deaths.

Blake’s shooting has intensified the Black Lives Matter Movement in the United States that erupted after the killing of a black man named George Floyd by the police.
