Germany question on ‘quality, safety and efficiency’ over Russia’s COVID-19 vaccine

Germany questions the quality and safety of the coronavirus vaccine launched by Russia.

“There is no known data on the quality, efficacy, and safety of the Russian vaccine.” a health ministry spokeswoman told German newspaper network RND.

“Patient safety is of the highest priority,” he added.

However, Russia had yesterday announced they made COVID-19 vaccine, this release has raised alarms in the all over scientific community. As health experts are finding it difficult to trust the Russia claims.

“If Russia`s vaccine is successful, then we will have to see critically whether it is safe and effective. There should not be any side effects of the vaccine and it should provide good immunity and protection. India has the capacity for mass production of vaccine,” Dr Guleria told ANI.

Meanwhile the vaccine has been registered as ‘Sputnik V’ and even Putin’s daughters has already been given a shot of the COVID-19 vaccination, reports from state media said.

According to a report by Reuters, immunologists and infectious disease experts say the step by Russia to claim the first spot in the global race to develop a vaccine against COVID-19 could be a “reckless” step.

An expert at University College London`s Genetics Institute, who called it “a reckless and foolish decision”, report quoted Francois Balloux.

DGCA suspends two AirAsia executives over safety violations

Aviation regulator DGCA has placed two senior executives of AirAsia India under suspension for three months over alleged safety violations. The action was taken on a complaint by an AirAsia India’s former pilot, who runs a YouTube channel called Flying Beast, for alleged violations of safety norms by the low-cost airline.

Mr Taneja alleged in the video that the airline has asked its pilots to do 98 per cent of landings in “Flap 3” mode, which allows it to save fuel. He said if a pilot does not do 98 per cent of landings in “Flap 3” mode, the airline considers it a violation of its standard operating procedure (SOP).

Mr. Taneja gave the example of the Imphal airport, where the plane descends more steeply as compared to other airports when approaching for landing. He said when an aircraft is coming down steeply, it needs to have a drag so that it remains slow, and in these circumstances a pilot has to do a “Flap full” landing.

Advocate Yeshwant Shenoy, one of Capt Taneja’s lawyers said: “Pilots are always afraid to raise issues, especially in these times of job insecurities due to the pandemic’s impact on the airline industry. Had pilots stood up for safety issues, Calicut crash could certainly have been avoided.” Capt Taneja’s spokesperson said: “It’s a clear win for a whistleblower against a a big organisation.’’

“We had issued a show cause notice to two AirAsia India executives — Head of Operations Manish Uppal and Head of Flight Safety Mukesh Nema — in June only. It has been decided now to suspend them for a period of three months,” the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) official said.

On June 15, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said on Twitter that it had taken note of the concerns raised by some stakeholders “against a particular airline and its approach to safety”. “DGCA has already started an investigation into the issues flagged and shall take appropriate action based on the outcome of the said investigation,” it added.

Senior DGCA officials had confirmed on June 15 itself that AirAsia India was under investigation after Taneja’s allegations.

US to kabke “Made in China” on goods prepared in Hong Kong

Goods prepared in Hong Kong for export to the United States will have to be labelled “Made in China” after September 25, according to a US government notice.

The latest step will see Hong Kong companies subject to the same trade war tariffs levied on mainland Chinese exporters, should they make products subject to these duties, said the U.S. Customs and Border Protection notice.

Last month, President Donald Trump retaliated to Beijing’s imposition of tough new security law in Hong Kong by removing special trading privileges for the financial hub, which in 2018 sold goods worth US$6.3 billion to the United States.

Some US media say the impact of the modified labelling will be limited because most goods imported from the territory are from mainland China, with few items actually produced in Hong Kong.

US imports include electronic devices and precious metals.

Hong Kong’s government protested the announcement, which it said ignored Hong Kong’s “unique role” as a member of the World Trade Organization. The city’s government will discuss the decision with the U.S. via its office in Washington D.C., according to its statement, and didn’t rule out taking action against the U.S. decision.

UP scholar studying in US dies in a road accident, family alleges harassment

A 20-year-old woman, Sudeeksha Bhati, who was going to meet her relatives ahead of returning to her college in the United States died in a road accident in Bulandshahr after alleged harassment.

Sudeeksha Bhati, a bright young woman, had secured 98 percent in her class 12 Board exam and was pursuing her higher studies in the United States after receiving a scholarship from a prestigious college.

A FIR was filed on Tuesday night after extensive anger and widepsread outrage over Sudeeskha’s death. Bhaujan Samajwadi Party Chief Mayawati has called her demise “extremely sad, embarrassing and very condemnable.”

Sudeeksha was visiting her relatives with her uncle Manoj Bhati and was chased by two men on a bike, the family said. However, the case has now taken political turn as Bulandshahr’s district magistrate and police chief said the officials probing the case have found no proof of harassment. A CCTV footage that shows the two men is being investigated by the district police for the time being.

“There were two men on the other bike. They were passing comments on her and were driving recklessly,” said Omkar Bhati, a family member.

The officials, on the other hand, said Sudeeksha was riding pillion with her young brother, who is reported to be a minor, when his motorcycle crashed into another bike that had stopped ahead of them “due to traffic”.

Ravindra Kumar, the district magistrate, today told the reporters: “The motorcycle was being driven by her brother, a minor, and not Sudeeksha’s uncle. So far, there is no evidence of harassment.”

The police also tweeted a clip from her younger brothers wherein he recounted the moments before the accident but no harassment was mentioned. The case is currently being investigated.

The Bulandshahr Police earlier this morning said they spoke to the eyewitnesses. “The police team that went to the spot had questioned eyewitnesses who said a Royal Enfield Bullet was coming from the front and it suddenly stopped (near their bike) because of the traffic, which led to the accident. The body of the woman was sent for the postmortem. At that time when the accident happened, the relative or any eyewitness had not spoken about any harassment,” said Atul Shrivastava, a senior police officer in Bulandshahr.

Sudeekhsa, a daughter of tea seller, from a small village of UP, was one of the very few girls who have been able to complete their school education.

Apple, Amazon, Facebook stand united against President Trump’s visa restrictions

The United States’s most prominent tech giants, Apple, Facebook, Twitter, and Amazon among others have joined hands to lend support to a lawsuit challenging President Donald’s Trump suspension of new visas for guest workers in the country. In an amicus brief filed on Monday by 50 organisation, it have been argued that new restrictions will affect the development in country’s economy amid the coronavirus pandemic.

In June, President Donald Trump had blocked temporary worker’s entry into the state including highly skilled talent sought by tech firms. The proclamation suspended a group of non-immigrant visa programs, including H-1B visas that enables many technology firms to hire engineers.

The purported justification of the suspension was said to be the protection of unemployed Americans from the threat of competition amid the scarcity of jobs in the wake of coronavirus pandemic.

“The president’s suspension of non-immigrant visa programs, supposedly to ‘protect’ American workers, actually harms those workers, their employers, and the economy,” the brief supported by more than 50 tech firms and organisations said.

“Beyond the overwhelming data undermining the proclamation’s purported rationale, the administration’s actions send a fundamentally un-American message to those abroad who might otherwise have brought their skills and ingenuity to the United States.”

“Suspension of visa programs will stifle innovation, hinder growth, and ultimately harm US workers, businesses, and the economy more broadly in irreparable ways,” the filing argued.

Many tech leaders including Tim Cook and Sundar Pichai have also voiced against the suspension.

“Immigration has contributed immensely to America’s economic success, making it a global leader in tech, and also Google the company it is today. Disappointed by today’s proclamation – we’ll continue to stand with immigrants and work to expand opportunity for all,” Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai had said in a tweet.

Apple CEO Tim Cook said he was “deeply disappointed” by the new proclamation. “Like Apple, this nation of immigrants has always found strength in our diversity, and hope in the enduring promise of the American Dream. There is no new prosperity without both. Deeply disappointed by this proclamation,” he had said.
