27-year-old cricketer allegedly kills himself over not playing in IPL

Karan Tiwari – a club cricketer, was found dead at his residence in Malad, Mumbai on Monday night. He was found hanging from ceiling fan in his room.

An aspiring cricketer, Karan, due to professional concerns about his career was suspected to be under depression.

Police said Karan had called one of his friends in Rajasthan and discussed the lack of opportunities and his struggles with mental health. The friend in question immediately called Karan’s sister, who also lives in Rajasthan, and informed her about the same. While his sister passed on the message to his mother in Malad, it was too late as Karan locked himself up inside his room after dinner on Monday.

Not getting a proper platform to showcase his talent and an elusive Indian Premier League (IPL) contact did not help his mental situation. Kurar police reportedly filed an accidental death case and the cause for the death is yet to be ascertained. No suicide note was found at his residence wherein he lived with his mother and brother.

Karan Tiwari was called ‘Junior Steyn’ in the Mumbai club cricket circle due to the resemblance of his bowling action to that of South Africa great Dale Steyn. Karan did not play for the Mumbai senior men’s cricket team but had been bowling at nets against Mumbai batsmen over the years.

IPL 2020: Edu-tech firm Unacademy eyes title sponsorship rights of the tournament

The contending for the succession of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020’s title sponsorship has begun among several major brands expressing their engrossment in becoming the main sponsor.

Unacademy, a education technology company, which is already one of the IPL’s sponsors is looking forward to grab the league’s title sponsorship rights now.

Vivo, which annually paid Rs 440 core, dropped out as title sponsor this year due to Sino-India border stand-off.

The BCCI is now discerning a lesser value – between Rs 300 to 350 crore – for a period of four month and 13 days. A BCCI official affirmed that Unacademy has picked up the bid papers but refrained from making any comments beyond that.

“I can confirm that unacademy has shown interest and picked the bid papers. I have heard they will be submitting a bid and are pretty serious. So Patanjali, if they bid, will have competition,” the senior official told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

The official said Unacademy is a part of IPL’s central sponsorship pool with other companies like Dream11 and Paytm.

“Yes, Unacademy is already in IPL’s central sponsors’ pool from 2020 to 2023,” the BCCI official said.

The BCCI has invited EoIs for title sponsorship rights for this year’s IPL that is set to start on September 19. The EoIs have to be submitted by August 14 and the final bids by August 18. Last week, the BCCI and Vivo decided to suspend their partnership for IPL 2020. The title sponsorship is a big part of IPL’s commercial revenue, half of which is shared equally by the franchises.

Vivo won the IPL title sponsorship rights for five years from 2018 to 2022 for ₹2,190 crore, which works out to about ₹440 crore per annum. According to analysts, BCCI is unlikely to get anything close to that amount from the new sponsor and should consider Unacademy’s proposal.

“Unlike some of the other Edu-Tech apps, Unacademy has 100 per cent Indian investment. And four and half months is the perfect time to get associated with a brand like IPL and broaden their horizons in terms of brand outreach,” the source close to the development said.

Reliance Jio in talks with Chinese firm ByteDance to buy TikTok’s India operations

While ByteDance continues to struggle for survival in the United States, a new report has said that – the Chinese firm that owns short video making app TikTok- is in preliminary talks with Reliance Jio to sell its India business to the company.

As per the media reports, people familiar with the matter have said that the “two companies began conversations late last month and have yet to reach a deal.” If successful, the deal might work as a savior for TikTok in its largest foreign market, India, as well as it will provide Mukesh Ambani led RIL an opportunity to connect with its customers.

As of now, any officials statement hasn’t been made by any of the companies.

According to the experts a merger between TikTok and Jio platforms would be a great step for Mukesh Ambani’s dream to revive RIL into a technology-driven company. The deal will also acknowledge India’s fear of the app breaching users’ data and sending it to the Chinese government which led to its ban in the country.

Apart from India, TikTok is facing major operational issues in countries like the United States after President Donald Trump issued an executive order threatening to ban the app unless an American company buys it till September 15. While ByteDance is in talks with the tech giant Microsoft to sell its US operations, Twitter has also shown interest in buying in app.

TikTok was one of the 59 apps which were banned in India as a fallout of geo-political tension with China. India was TikTok’s largest market outside China with more than 200 million users.

Meanwhile, ByteDance has over 2,000 employees in India who are currently dependent on company’s ability to either convince the government to allow them to operate or to sell itself. The company had earlier refused the allegation of breaching users’ private data and even agreed upon establishing data centres in India as a solution to privacy fears.

China’s days as world factory are done, says iPhone maker Foxconn

The Chinese market that has been ruling the world trade for years now seems to lose its power because of the trade war. According to media reports, a major supplier to Apple and a few other technology giants is planning to slit its supply chain between the Chinese market and the U.S., while adding that it is about time that China lost its status as factory to the world.

According to Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. Chairman Young Liu, the main base of production for gadgets from iPhones to Dell desktop and Nintendo Switches is losing focus from China and is shifting to the outside market. The proportion outside the country that was 25 percent in last June has now increased to 30 percent making it clear that the trade market is changing rapidly.

“Ratio will rise as the company — known also as Foxconn — moves more manufacturing to Southeast Asia and other regions to avoid escalating tariffs on Chinese-made goods headed to U.S. markets,” Liu said.

“No matter if it’s India, Southeast Asia or the Americas, there will be a manufacturing ecosystem in each,” Liu said, while adding that China will still play a major role in Foxconn’s manufacturing empire, but the country’s “days as the world’s factory are done.”

The rift between Beijing and Washington is a major reason why manufacturer are shifting their production outside China. Liu last year said that Apple’s highest priced product, the iPhone, can also begin its production outside China if tension continue to intensify.

Meanwhile, Foxconn has been prepping to expand its operations in other countries including India, leading the iPhone maker to grow its reach in a country of 1.3 billion people.

Chinese rivals, on the other hand, are also turning out to be a threat. Local electronic title Luxshare Precision Industry Co. is set to be the first Chinese homegrown iPhone assembler after its July deal with Wiston Crop to buy an Apple handset production plant from the.

China’s influence has been significantly effected after President Donald Trump issued an executive order banning U.S. residents from doing business with Chinese firm Tencent Holding Ltd.’s WeChat

When I opened the portal for downloading my question paper, I found that two question papers were uploaded — one of Hindi and another of the paper scheduled for August 13. I sent mails to the SOL but there was no response. I consulted a professor who advised me to attempt the paper scheduled for today”, according to Bussiness Standard.

DU Teachers’ Association member Abha Dev Habib also raised questions over the rule of asking students to mention their name in the e-mail while sending their answer scripts. “Students fear victimisation. They are nervous about sharing their experiences in the public domain as they may face discrimination,” she said.

Indian team can manage without MS Dhoni: Aakash Chopra

Famous Indian commentator Aakash Chopra said that the Indian cricket team can manage without MS Dhoni in the 2021 T20 World Cup. According to him, the team can perform without MS Dhoni at the 2021 T20 World Cup. Aakash Chopra shares his views on various platforms and also gives expert advice on his very own Youtube Channel.

“I think we can manage without him, let’s be honest. Because we are talking about 2021,” Chopra said. Chopra also said having MS Dhoni in the side is an advantage but at the same time, we need to understand that at this stage Dhoni is not willing to play for any side, not the Indian team or not any other domestic side, Dhoni has to clear doughts about his role in the Indian cricket team.

“It is in India and you definitely want Dhoni to be there in the team and want him to play. “But first thing, does Dhoni want to play? I have been saying this like a broken record that I feel he doesn’t want to play,” he stated.

Aakash Chopra tried to deepen his point by emphasising the fact that even if MS Dhoni is available to play then also Virat Kolhi’s side should learn to go ahead without him. The 2021 T20 World Cup is not too far and this time India should go ahead without MS Dhoni and the team management should make a clear stand on this topic.

“But even if he is available, we are talking about 2021. It is still more than a year to go when that World Cup will happen in India. So, we have to get used to managing without him and I think will get used to it by then. So I feel his presence is not so important that if he is not there you will not win the World Cup,” he added.

Taliban warned the Kabul government that any attack on freed prisoners will jeopardize peace talks

Ahead of an upcoming release of Taliban detainees held in Afghan prisons, the Taliban warned the government in Kabul against any attacks on the released prisons. They said such incidents would jeopardize the peace talks between them.

A Taliban spokesman told The Associated Press, “There have been at least 11 such attacks in the past several months instances when freed Taliban figures were killed, harassed and re-arrested by government forces.”

Kabul government officials denied the allegations of unwarranted attacks on freed Taliban. This release is a part of a deal the insurgent Asian group had signed with the United States earlier this year. Apart from these prisoners more 400 Taliban prisoners are still left in government prisons.

Suhail Shaheen, spokesperson of Taliban warned that any attacks on freed prisoners will pull them back to the battlefield despite orders from their leaders “to stay at home, with their families.”

Attacks on their homes will “make it impossible for them to stay in their homes,” Shaheen said. “Such incidents have happened that they have been re-arrested and also killed.”

Rajasthan government crisis, Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot will meet Sachin Pilot

Rajastha: Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot will meet Sachin Pilot. After so many controversies, the bitter rivals are expected to come face-to-face at a CLP (Congress Legislature Party) meeting is scheduled for tomorrow. Meeting is just a day before the special session of the Rajasthan assembly.

Pilot returned to Jaipur yesterday. He returned after ending his month-long battle meeting with Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.

Mr Gehlot said Congress MLAs are “naturally upset” about the truce but everyone has to move on. “Forget and forgive,” he declared while meticulously avoiding any chance of a “reunion” photo-op with Mr Pilot.

“It is natural for the MLAs to be upset. The manner in which this episode occurred and the way in which they stayed for a month, it was natural. I’ve explained to them that sometimes we need to be tolerant if we have to serve the nation, state, people and save the democracy,” the Chief Minister told reporters.

“We have to forgive mistakes and be united for the sake of democracy. More than 100 MLAs stood by me. That in itself is remarkable.”

“Some unparliamentary and inappropriate terms were used. Not to say that I was not offended, I am human. I did feel hurt and disappointed, but we have larger mission and name-calling should not be a deterrent,” he said.

Mr Gehlot said if the party leadership had decided to forgive the rebel MLAs, he would “give them a warm hug”. But he avoided questions on how he would re-embrace a man he had dubbed “nikamma” and corrupt.

“We stood by the party so we feel hurt. You can’t buy milk and water at the same rate,” grumbled Prashant Bairwa, an MLA.
