Speaking at an event in Hyderabad, he said such communities have always existed, with some tendencies present from birth and others developing later in life. He added that these individuals are human beings with a right to live, and that society has a place for them.

Citing Tradition And Mythology

Bhagwat invoked Indian tradition to make his case, pointing to Shikhandi, a figure from the Mahabharata who fought alongside major warriors despite being outside conventional gender norms. He said Indian society has historically had quiet, informal ways of accommodating such individuals rather than making an issue of it, adding that they continue to have their own deities, places of worship, and even Mahamandaleshwars who take part in the Kumbh Mela.

A Notable Shift In Tone

The remarks mark one of the more direct public acknowledgments of the LGBTQ+ community by a senior RSS figure, an organisation often seen as socially conservative. Bhagwat has touched on similar themes before, having previously spoken about ensuring the community does not feel isolated. This time, he framed the issue explicitly around dignity, natural variation, and continuity with Indian tradition rather than treating it as a fringe topic.

Women are emerging as the flag-bearers of hope in Bhagwant Mann Government’s war against drugs, ‘Yudh Nashean Virudh’. A recent awareness programme held in Moga underscored a powerful message that is resonating across the state, that mothers, wives, sisters and other family members are leading the battle against substance abuse by supporting their loved ones through treatment and recovery.

When a household falls into the trap of addiction, it’s the women and children who bear the harshest brunt. From economic and emotional distress to heightened risk of violence, drugs destroy homes from within. But families in Punjab are now playing a critical role in identifying addiction as an illness, motivating their loved ones to seek treatment, supporting recovery and preventing relapse.

Women often emerge as the driving force behind recovery, serving as motivators, caregivers and counsellors who help their loved ones overcome addiction. Many also extend their support to others in their neighbourhoods and relatives, encouraging them to go for treatment and rebuild their lives.

These voices resonated strongly at the “Menace of Substance Abuse – Uncovering the Burden on Women,” organised at SFC College, Jalalabad. The event brought together recovering patients and women family members who shared first-hand accounts of how their courage, resilience and perseverance helped their family members return to a life of dignity.

Ludhiana-based Ragini Kaur says, “My husband was a drug addict since before our marriage. But I only came to know about it once we started living together. We had lost all hope when someone guided us to take him to a drug-de-addiction and rehab centre. And that helped. Today he is completely sober. After my husband became free of drug addiction, we also helped my mama’s son undergo a de-addiction course at the same place. He too has recovered successfully.”

Balwinder Kaur, from Buttar Kalan in Moga, also shared the journey of her husband’s recovery from drug addiction. “Addiction had broken our family emotionally and financially. Counselling taught us that recovery is a journey in which the whole family plays a role. I took my husband to a de-addiction centre. Today my husband has turned completely sober. Not just him, another boy from our neighbourhood who was addicted to heroin also recovered successfully,” she added.

Such stories of success against drug addiction reinforce the importance of placing families, especially women, at the centre of Punjab’s de-addiction strategy. Recognising their crucial role in the fight against drug addiction, the government is ensuring that family counselling becomes a key component of every patient’s recovery in government-run de-addiction centres.

Dr Arvind Goyal, District Nodal Psychiatrist, Ludhiana while endorsing the view said, “Recovery from substance dependence is most successful when treatment is complemented by a strong support system at home. While the government has strengthened access to free treatment, counselling, and rehabilitation services across the state, the involvement of family members remains critical. Families provide emotional support, encourage adherence to treatment, help individuals navigate setbacks, and create an environment that enables long-term change. In many cases, we have seen mothers, wives, sisters, play a pivotal role in motivating individuals to stay on the path to recovery. De-addiction is a collective effort where families are often the strongest partners in rebuilding lives.”

Punjab Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr Balbir Singh said, “Behind every successful recovery there’s a family, a community, and a government system that chooses hope and compassion. Mothers, wives and sisters are becoming the torchbearers for the change towards a healthy, addiction-free, and Rangla Punjab. The success of Mann Government’s Yudh Nashean Virudh lies in making the fight against addiction a people’s movement, and we’ll continue to center the voices of women who are leading this change.”

Power corporation Employees Shouldn’t Cause Hardship to Farmers & Public; Withdraw Strike, Govt Is Always Ready for Dialogue: Aman Arora

Punjab Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) President and Cabinet Minister Aman Arora on Sunday urged the striking Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) employees to immediately withdraw their strike, saying it is causing immense hardship to farmers during the crucial paddy transplantation season and disrupting essential services for nearly three crore people across the state. Reiterating that the Bhagwant Mann Government is always ready for dialogue, he said a high-level committee constituted 25 days ago at the employee unions’ request is already deliberating on their pending demands and assured that every genuine recommendation of the committee will be accepted by the government.

Addressing a press conference on Sunday, AAP Punjab President and Cabinet Minister Aman Arora said, “Power Corporation employees have been on strike since July 21, causing considerable inconvenience to the people of Punjab, especially our farmers. The ongoing paddy transplantation season is at a crucial stage, and disruption of electricity services has added to the hardships faced by farmers. Besides farmers, domestic consumers, traders, our mothers, sisters and the general public are also facing serious inconvenience due to disruption in power-related services.”

The AAP Punjab President said, “The Bhagwant Mann Government is a government for every section of society. Since assuming office, it has taken several historic decisions for the welfare of employees. The government has provided jobs to thousands of youth in various departments, regularised thousands of contractual employees, extended them service benefits and resolved several long-pending demands of employees across different departments. Many demands of the Power Board employees have already been accepted by the government.”

The Cabinet Minister said, “Regarding the remaining demands, it was the employee unions themselves who requested the government to constitute a special committee for discussions with representation from both the government and the unions. Acting on their request, the government constituted a high-level committee around 20 to 25 days ago. The committee comprises senior officers from the Finance, Power and Personnel Departments along with four representatives of the employee unions. The committee has been continuously deliberating on these issues, and the government is fully prepared to consider every genuine demand with empathy and a positive approach.”

He added, “I assure the employee unions that every genuine demand recommended by the committee will be accepted by the government. When discussions between the government and the employee unions are already underway, resorting to a strike before the dialogue process is completed is not in the larger public interest.”

Aman Arora said, “Going on strike with the mindset that public inconvenience and hardship to farmers will put pressure on the government cannot be justified under any circumstances. The government belongs to you, and you are servants of the people just as we are. Therefore, I humbly appeal to all employee unions not to inconvenience the people of Punjab, especially our farmer brothers during the ongoing paddy transplantation season.”

Sharing an incident from his visit to villages, the Cabinet Minister said, “Today, I met several farmers, including one farmer who cultivates three acres of leased land. He told me with great anguish that because the electricity supply has been disrupted due to the strike, his livelihood has been badly affected. What is the fault of such farmers? If there are issues, they are with the government, and the government is already considering them positively. Innocent citizens should not be made to suffer in any manner.”

Aman Arora stated, “CM Bhagwant Singh Mann is personally monitoring the entire matter. Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema and Power Minister Harbhajan Singh ETO are in constant touch with the employee unions and are making every possible effort to resolve the issue through dialogue.”

He said, “The Punjab Government’s stand is very clear. We are always willing to listen to every genuine concern raised by any employee union or individual employee and are committed to finding an appropriate solution. The Chief Minister, the Power Department and the entire government have their hearts, minds and doors open. You are welcome to meet the Chief Minister or any minister at any time and present your case. Every demand that is in the interest of employees, Punjab and the people of the state will receive due consideration.”

The Cabinet Minister said, “During the last four and a half years, the Punjab Government has undertaken unprecedented efforts to ensure uninterrupted power supply across the state. If some people attempt to tarnish the government’s image by inconveniencing the public through a strike, the people of Punjab are well aware of the facts.”

Appealing to farmer organisations, Aman Arora said, “I urge farmer organisations to keep the larger public interest in mind and play a constructive role by engaging with the employee unions to help bring the strike to an end.”

In his concluding appeal, Aman Arora stated, “I once again fold my hands and appeal to my Power Corporation employee brothers and sisters to immediately withdraw the strike and restore electricity services to normal. Around 90 per cent of the employees, nearly 18,500 personnel, are on strike, and because of this nearly three crore people of Punjab are being affected. Neither the government nor the people can accept attempts to create pressure by disrupting essential public services or causing hardship to citizens. Place your demands before the government without hesitation.”

“Every genuine demand will be resolved through dialogue, but this approach of arm-twisting the government by inconveniencing the public will neither be tolerated nor viewed favourably. Let us resolve every issue through discussions while safeguarding the larger interests of Punjab and its people,” said Aman Arora.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Sunday said that Punjab has established a system where neither cash nor recommendations determine success, but merit alone prevails. He said that the record 882 students from Punjab Government schools qualifying NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) 2026 and more than 68,000 government jobs provided solely on merit through a transparent recruitment process stand as the strongest testimony to the state government’s commitment to honesty, transparency and equal opportunity.

Felicitating the successful NEET candidates at a ceremony in Zirakpur, the Chief Minister said that the historic achievement had been made possible through sustained investments in quality education, free coaching, mentorship and career counselling, enabling government school students to compete with the best in the country and laying a strong foundation for a Rangla Punjab.

During the felicitation ceremony, CM Bhagwant Singh Mann honoured students who qualified NEET 2026 and interacted with them. In an emotional and memorable moment, several students requested the Chief Minister’s autograph, which he graciously signed. The students also presented hand-drawn portraits of the Chief Minister as a token of their affection and gratitude, making the occasion even more special.

Sharing a snippet from the felicitation ceremony, CM Bhagwant Singh Mann stated on X: “The meritorious students of Punjab Government schools have once again proved that when children are given opportunities and access to quality education, no dream is beyond their reach. For the first time this year, 882 students from our government schools have qualified the NEET examination, creating history. Addressing the gathering, CM Bhagwant Singh Mann said, “Today is a moment of immense pride for all of us. I congratulate every student who has qualified NEET, their parents and teachers for this remarkable achievement. I am confident that these young achievers will become dedicated doctors and serve society with missionary zeal.”

The Chief Minister said, “In 2022, only 82 students from Punjab Government schools had qualified the NEET examination. This year, that number has risen to 882. This is a historic achievement for Punjab and reflects the transformation in our education system.”

The Chief Minister said, “Nearly 20 lakh students from across the country appeared for NEET this year. Our students have made Punjab proud by excelling in one of the toughest competitive examinations in the country. The number of successful students could have been even higher, but many deserving students suffered because the examination paper was leaked.”

He said, “It is heartbreaking that many students were left disheartened because of the paper leak and some even chose not to appear for the examination. Unfortunately, this is not the first such incident. The country witnessed paper leaks in 2017, 2024 and now again in 2026. This is a complete failure of the Union Government and is highly condemnable, intolerable and unpardonable.”

Contrasting Punjab’s record with the national situation, the Chief Minister stated, “It has been more than four years since our government assumed office and not a single examination paper has leaked in Punjab. Recently, when an attempt to facilitate cheating in the Pharmacy Officer examination came to our notice, we acted immediately.”

The Chief Minister pointed out, “All those involved in the cheating racket were arrested and sent behind bars. Twenty-one persons have been jailed in connection with the case. I assure every young person in Punjab that this government will never allow even a single incident of paper leakage or cheating to compromise their future.”

Highlighting the state’s transparent recruitment policy, CM Bhagwant Singh Mann said, “Merit alone decides government jobs in Punjab. More than 68,000 government jobs have already been provided to youth through a completely transparent recruitment process. There is no recommendation, no bribery and no favouritism. Government jobs are given only on merit. Some candidates have secured government jobs multiple times purely because of their merit, and many Punjabi youth are now returning from abroad to work in the state.”

The Chief Minister said, “Our government is preparing students for intense competition. Today, students are demanding more challenging examinations because they are confident of their abilities. This reflects a complete transformation from earlier times when students wanted easier papers.”

The Chief Minister said, “To strengthen the education system, we are sending teachers to Finland and premier institutions like the IIMs (Indian Institute of Management) for advanced training so that they can upgrade their skills and provide world-class education to our students.”

He stated, “The results of these efforts are visible today as students from government schools are clearing prestigious examinations like NEET. Success should never make anyone arrogant. Confidence and a positive attitude are essential, but humility and hard work are the real keys to achieving greater success.”

CM Bhagwant Singh Mann stated, “When our government assumed office in 2022, Punjab ranked 27th in school education. Today, Punjab has emerged as the number one state in the country in school education. This transformation is the outcome of sustained reforms and our unwavering commitment to strengthening government schools.”

He pointed out, “There was a time when government schools were viewed only as institutions for poor children and people mocked them. Today, after establishing Schools of Eminence and carrying out large-scale reforms, Punjab has surpassed Kerala and become the country’s leading state in school education. This is true public service and we will continue working tirelessly for this noble cause.”

Drawing an analogy, the Chief Minister said, “Just as an airport runway enables an aircraft to take off smoothly, the Punjab Government is creating the foundation that enables young people to realise their dreams and ambitions. I urge every student to carve out their own identity and leave a lasting mark on society because the sky is the limit.”

The Chief Minister said, “Always remain grounded even after achieving success. Believe in the power of hard work because it is the only path to lasting success. I especially urge our daughters to use education as a powerful tool to bring meaningful change in society. Today, girls are outperforming boys in almost every field, including those once considered the exclusive domain of men.”

CM Bhagwant Singh Mann stated, “Women empowerment is essential for building an egalitarian society. It is a matter of immense pride that girls are excelling in every sphere, and I am confident they will continue to create new benchmarks through education.”

Striking an emotional chord with the students, the Chief Minister said, “The determination shown by the country’s youth compelled the Union Government to bow before them at Jantar Mantar. Our young people possess the intelligence, energy and determination to achieve anything in life. I am confident that all of you will become outstanding doctors and serve humanity with distinction.”

CM Bhagwant Singh Mann affirmed, “India can become the world’s leading nation only if Punjab remains at the forefront of national progress. Punjab has always played a pioneering role in ensuring the country’s food security, contributing to the freedom struggle, safeguarding the nation’s borders and bringing laurels in sports. Together, we will continue working to build a Rangla Punjab.”

Congratulating the students once again, the Chief Minister wished them a bright future and said that this achievement marked only the beginning of a glorious journey ahead.

Punjab Govt School Students Rewrite NEET Success Story

Punjab’s education reforms have produced unprecedented results, with 882 students from government schools qualifying NEET 2026, more than doubling the number of successful candidates from 437 in 2024. Over the last three years, 2,166 government school students have qualified NEET, while 786 students have cracked the JEE examination, reflecting the growing academic excellence in government schools. Of the 882 NEET qualifiers this year, 686 are girls and 340 belong to the Scheduled Caste community, underlining the government’s commitment to inclusive and equitable access to quality education.

This transformation has been driven by the PACE (Punjab Academic Coaching for Excellence) Programme, which provides free coaching, mentorship, mock tests and career guidance in partnership with leading institutions such as Avanti and Mantra for Change. The state has also strengthened the education ecosystem by recruiting over 28,000 permanent teachers, establishing computer labs in 5,012 government schools, installing 8,268 interactive panels, and ensuring modern infrastructure and international teacher training.

On the occasion of Kargil Vijay Diwas, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Sunday paid heartfelt tributes to the brave soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice while defending the nation’s sovereignty, asserting that their unmatched valour, courage and selfless service would continue to inspire generations. The Chief Minister laid a wreath at the War Memorial, paid floral tributes to the Kargil War heroes, interacted with the families of soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice and ex-servicemen, distributed five two-wheelers to differently abled ex-servicemen, and encouraged NCC (National Cadet Corps) cadets as well as cadets of the Maharaja Ranjit Singh Armed Forces Preparatory Institute and Mai Bhago Armed Forces Preparatory Institute, Mohali, to join the armed forces.

The Chief Minister reaffirmed the Punjab Government’s unwavering commitment to the welfare of the families of soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice while protecting the nation and ex-servicemen.

Sharing a snippet from this auspicious occasion, CM Bhagwant Singh Mann stated on X: “On the occasion of the 27th Kargil Vijay Diwas today, I pay my heartfelt tributes to the 527 brave soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice to safeguard the unity, integrity, and honour of our nation. Among them were 65 courageous sons of Punjab, whose sacrifice fills every Punjabi with immense pride.

“Soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice do not belong to just one family; they are the nation’s greatest treasure. The freedom and security we enjoy today are the result of the unparalleled sacrifices made by our brave soldiers. Remembering their sacrifice and honouring their legacy is the truest tribute we can pay to them. Jai Hind,” the post concluded.

Addressing the gathering, CM Bhagwant Singh Mann said, “The supreme sacrifice made by our brave soldiers will continue to inspire generations of youth to serve the nation with patriotism, dedication and selflessness. During the Kargil War, 527 soldiers laid down their lives in the service of the nation, including more than 65 brave sons of Punjab. Their courage and sacrifice will always remain a source of pride and inspiration for every Indian.”

The Chief Minister pointed out, “Punjab’s history is written with countless sacrifices, and nations that honour their history continue to thrive. Our martyrs belong not merely to their families but to the entire nation. Their sacrifice can never be forgotten and it is our collective responsibility to preserve and honour their glorious legacy.”

Paying homage to the brave soldiers, CM Bhagwant Singh Mann stated, “Whether in the icy heights of Kargil or the scorching deserts of Jaisalmer, our brave soldiers remain steadfast in protecting the unity, integrity and sovereignty of the nation. Recalling the 1999 Kargil War fills every Indian with pride because the entire country stood united with an extraordinary spirit of patriotism during that defining moment.”

The Chief Minister said, “Kargil Vijay Diwas symbolises the extraordinary courage, heroism and sacrifice displayed by India’s armed forces under the most challenging circumstances. Every Indian is proud of the unparalleled bravery shown by our soldiers during the conflict. Their dedication to the nation can never be repaid.”

Highlighting the Punjab Government’s commitment towards the welfare of soldiers and their families, Bhagwant Singh Mann said, “As a mark of respect for the supreme sacrifice of our soldiers, the Punjab Government provides financial assistance of ₹1 crore to the family of every soldier who attains martyrdom in the line of duty.
