AUS vs ENG: Is sledging affecting umpires? Steve Smith dismissed instantly after Buttler’s vociferous appeal, watch video

AUS vs ENG: Australia put England in a difficult situation as the visitors try to prevent a series whitewash in the third ODI at the MCG. David Warner and Travis Head teamed up for a powerful 269-run partnership. However, apart from that special partnership, on more incident got viral.

With Warner (106) and Head (152) leading the way as the hosts’ openers got off to a flawless start, Australia ended 5-353 following a 48-over time limit due to rain. However, there was some late drama as Steve Smith was dismissed on 21 runs after a Jos Buttler appeal was delayed, leaving the game in an odd situation.

Steve Smith left sunned after dismissal

Olly Stone’s delivery appeared to have nicked Smith’s bat and been caught, which is why Buttler first motioned to review the play. In what Adam Gilchrist in his commentary referred to as “extraordinary events,” umpire Paul Wilson only intervened after Buttler appealed, dismissing a stunned Smith. Watch the video here:

In the commentary panel, Gilchrist said “Buttler is reviewing this, straight away he thought he heard something, Extraordinary scenes. There have been a few low-key moments in a low-key game but that just tops it. Buttler thought he heard something straight away, even though it was almost a muffled, muted appeal.”

David Warner-Travis Head break two decade old record

“Look at that, straight away. I reckon he’s saying I haven’t heard an appeal yet so I can’t review it and then he asks, ‘Howzat?’, so maybe he had to wait for an actual appeal first before any action could be taken.”

Having had difficulty early in the match on Tuesday getting wickets of Australia’s top order, England would undoubtedly take the wicket. By surpassing Adam Gilchrist and Ricky Ponting’s 225 in 2002, Head and Warner’s stand recorded the best ODI partnership ever at the MCG.
