Asian Games 2023: Finally, Dipa Karmakar’s long 21-month exile is coming to an end and we would see the brightest Indian gymnast star back on the big stage. Dipa Karmakar is all set to return to the professional level now that her 21-month ban has been lifted.
The first female gymnast to represent India at the Olympics missed out on a medal by a margin of error. She has been serving the ban since October 11, 2021, and it will end on July 10, 2023. Right before the Asian Games 2023 trials.
The Tripura-born gymnast tested positive for higenamine. A substance that is banned or prohibited by WADA. Dipa later stated that she ingested the substance unknowingly and she does not know the source of the substance.
All Eyes on Asian Games 2023
Dipa has been preparing for Asian Games 2023 and wants to return back to her best. The Gymnastics Federation of India mentioned her name in the probables for Asian Games back in May. And now, Dipa will take part in Asian Games 2023 trials.
The trials will take place in Bhubaneshwar on July 11 and 12. Just one day after Dipa’s ban is lifted. This is a golden opportunity for her. Her coach Bishweshwar Nandi stated that she has been training for the last 2-3 months and is ready for the challenge.
On a phone call with PTI, Dipa confirmed that “It is confirmed I will be participating in the trials. I have been training in Agartala last few months, so hope for the best.”
An Astonishing Career
The olympian gymnast career has been filled with both highs and lows. She won a bronze medal in the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games and the 2015 Asian Championships in Hiroshima. She became the first Indian gymnast to compete in the Olympics.
In 2018, Dipa became the first Indian Indian gymnast to win a gold medal at a global event. Her win in Artistic Gymnastics World Challenge Cup in Turkey itched her name in the history books forever.
After that injury stuck and just when she was improving the doping test happened. She would like to reach the top once again, after all, her whole career is still in front of her.
