Four big records that can be broken in ODI World Cup 2023

1. Mohammed Shami can break Zaheer Khan or Javagal Srinath’s record

Mohammed Shami has played a pivotal role in taking the Indian cricket team into the semi-finals in the past two World Cup tournaments. In the 2015 World Cup, he secured the fourth position among leading wicket-takers by claiming 17 wickets across 7 matches. His second appearance in the ODI World Cup was in 2019, where he clinched 14 wickets in four matches, maintaining an economy rate of 5.48.

The seasoned player has the opportunity to surpass Zaheer Khan and Javagal Srinath’s records as the leading wicket-taker for Team India in this prestigious tournament. Currently, both Khan and Srinath hold the joint record with 44 wickets each. In contrast, Shami has already gathered 31 wickets from 11 matches in ODI World Cups.

2. Rohit Sharma can break Sachin Tendulkar’s record

The Indian skipper, Rohit Sharma, is on the brink of surpassing Sachin Tendulkar’s record for the most sixes hit in the tournament. The current record for the highest number of sixes in ODI World Cups is held by Chris Gayle, who hammered 49 sixes across five World Cup appearances from 2003 to 2019. Within the Indian team, Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly currently occupy the seventh and ninth spots, having struck 27 and 29 sixes respectively.

Nonetheless, in the upcoming 2023 ODI World Cup, Rohit Sharma might outshine these iconic batsmen and secure the title of being the Indian cricketer with the most sixes in World Cups. With two ODI World Cups under his belt (2015 and 2019), he has already dispatched 23 towering sixes in 17 matches.

3. Glenn Maxwell can break Ricky Ponting’s record

Australia’s hopes in the upcoming ODI World Cup 2023 are heavily vested in the contributions of Glenn Maxwell. The dynamic batsman is poised to bolster his team’s prowess and make a significant impact. With a tally of 21 soaring sixes across 16 innings, Maxwell presently holds the distinction of being Australia’s fourth-highest six-hitter in World Cups. However, the impending tournament presents him with the opportunity to ascend the ranks and claim the title of Australia’s premier six-hitter, eclipsing revered names like Matthew Hayden, Aaron Finch, and Ricky Ponting. As Maxwell readies himself to unleash his power-hitting prowess, he could potentially rewrite the records and leave an indelible mark on the cricketing stage.

4. Mitchell Starc can break McGrath’s record

The illustrious legacy of former Australian fast bowler Glenn McGrath stands tall as he holds the record for the highest wickets in World Cups, accumulating an impressive 71 wickets across 39 matches. As the forthcoming edition of the World Cup approaches, the spotlight is on Mitchell Starc, poised to potentially surpass McGrath’s feat and etch his name in the annals of history as the new pinnacle of World Cup wicket-takers. Starc’s remarkable journey saw him secure 22 wickets in 8 games during the 2015 World Cup and an impressive 27 wickets in 10 matches in the 2019 World Cup.
