Gianni Infantino said, “We’ve been told many lessons, from Europeans, from the western world. I’m European. I think for what we have been doing for 3,000 years, we should apologise for the next 3,000 years for giving moral lessons.”

“I met migrant workers (in Qatar). How many of these western business companies, which make billions, how many of those have addressed migrant workers’ rights? None of them.”

Gianni backs Indian fans in Qatar

Some western media agencies asserted that the Indian expats who greeted the fans in Argentina and Brazil shirts when they started to arrive in Doha were “paid fans” employed by the host country. Infantino asserted that by making fun of Indian fans, the European media had displayed racism. Argentina or Brazil are known to have millions of ardent supporters throughout India.

Gianni said, “Can’t someone who looks like an Indian cheer for England, Spain or Germany? This is racism, pure racism. I think he can cheer for whoever he wants to. This is what people want. Tolerance starts with ourselves and we shouldn’t spread aggression.”

Historic statement by Gianni Infantino

Continuing further he said, “Today I feel Qatari. Today I feel Arab. Today I feel African. Today I feel gay. Today I feel a migrant worker. I was bullied in a foreign country, as a child in school, for freckles, because I was Italian (and) I didn’t speak good German. You look down, go into your room and cry.”

Concerns about Qatar’s treatment of migrant workers, women, and the LGBTQ community have dominated the build-up to the tournament in the Gulf nation.
