AAP National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal has proposed a plan to provide affordable homes for sanitation workers and government employees. In a letter addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Kejriwal requested the central government to allocate land for the project. He emphasised that the homes would be available through easy monthly installments, ensuring affordability for workers.
Arvind Kejriwal Seeks Land Subsidy for Housing Scheme
In his letter, Kejriwal highlighted that most of Delhi’s land is under the jurisdiction of the central government. He proposed that if the land is provided at subsidized rates, the Delhi government could construct affordable houses for sanitation workers and government staff. Workers would then repay the cost in installments deducted from their salaries.
The first phase of the proposed scheme aims to provide housing for sanitation workers of the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) and Nagar Nigam. Kejriwal underscored the need to prioritise sanitation workers, acknowledging their contributions to society. "This initiative is for the poor and hardworking individuals who deserve dignity and security," he said.
Expansion Plan for Government Employees
Kejriwal also expressed his vision to expand the scheme to include other government employees in the future. The project, if implemented, could address housing shortages for several worker groups and ensure stability for their families.
A Welfare Proposal Amid Election Season
With the Delhi Assembly Elections set for February 5, 2025, and the vote counting scheduled for February 8, Kejriwal’s proposal comes at a crucial time. By focusing on worker welfare, the AAP leader aims to highlight his party’s commitment to addressing pressing social issues.
